In order to deliver a strong force on the ball the body should “post up” or brace at impact. In the sixth Paddy’s Golf Tips video of a series about how you can teach yourself, I demonstrate how to help achieve that feeling in the swing with a few practice drills including using an impact bag, hitting the ground, trying to stop at impact and practice swings in heavy rough.

Brace for Solid Impact | Padraig Harrington

If you watch any picture of a pro, like you’ll see extreme pressures and stretches. You got to be you got to be pretty damn strong to hold on to the club. But we want to get that feeling of brace. Okay. Everything is posting up and bracing strong at impact. So, how do we get that? Winner of the gold medal and the champion golfer of the year is Podrick Harrington. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Welcome back to Patty’s Golf Tips. We’re here at Grand Lakes in Orlando. H Have you ever heard this one? Brace for impact to do with golf. Okay, at impact in golf, we’re actually trying to deliver a big strong force. If you watch any picture of a pro, like you’ll see extreme pressures and stretches. You got to be you got to be pretty damn strong to hold on to the club, but we want to get that feeling of brace. Okay? Everything is posting up and bracing strong at impact. So, how do we get that? Well, pretty much there’s a few drills. You can you can get an impact bag. don’t have an impact bag. So, I’m going to mimic it here. I’ve just got an old rrook sack. And you can make an impact bag. You can get an old bag and just fill it with towels. Don’t make it very heavy to start off with. So, you put it on the ground and you just swing into it. I’m not going to hit it cuz I actually don’t know what’s in this. But, as you see, if I’m hitting into something big, you can see how I’m going to post up and be nice and strong. Okay, that is a really good drill to do during the winter. Start off easy cuz you could hurt your wrists. So just build it up. Nice swings, impact. Okay, if you haven’t got that, okay, alternatively, and I pretty much think you should do this all the time anyway, whenever you’re taking a practice swing, you should hit the ground, especially with a driver. So if I take a practice swing up here, it’s quite loose, okay? It’s relaxed. But if I take a practical and hit the ground with the sole plate of the club, you can see I’m bracing up. I’m getting much more of my impact position. Okay? So remember in the golf swing, we want when we squat down, we want to pull that club hard down. We want, unless we’re slicing it, we want to get the speed here. But as we come into impact, we’re actually pulling the club back into us and bracing. This is brace. This is brace. Your core is brea your neck takes a huge amount of pressure. So we want that feeling again hitting the ground gives a nice feeling. Another great way doing it a nod to Tommy Fleetwood is do a Tommy Fleetwood finish. That is if you try and stop at impact. So this is a great one for speed. Bracing is good for speed and strike, but this one’s really good for both of those. So, if I try and stop at impact, you can see I’m not able to do it. It’ll be just too hard to get the club to stop there. But, I’ll have that curtailed follow through. Everything’s going to be really strong in this position. So, again, by trying to stop at impact, I’m going to push up, brace, be strong at impact. I’ll have that threequarter follow through. Great for hitting mid irons. Really great. And it’s good for speed to practice that way. So try and stop. So again just like so right brace at impact one I love to see guys VJ sing you watch him on the golf course because you can’t bring a training aid in the golf course. So what does VJ do to get that feeling of brace for impact and the great thing as well when you’re bracing for impact you’re going to strengthen your grip. You’re going to imp it’s going to improve where your fingers are in your grip because you won’t be able to do it with it. It’s hard to do with a bad grip. So, your grip’s going to get better. Your strength is going to get better. And I watch VJ during tournaments when nothing’s going on and he’s just working on his swing. He’ll walk over to the roof. Now, I’ll take my driver here. So, he’ll often go over to the heaviest piece of roof he can find, heavier than this even, and swing into it. Again, you can do that in your garden if you’ve got a back garden. Go find a bit of heavy clump of grass. Start off gently, guys or girls. I don’t want you hurting yourself, but swing into grass. You’re going to have to really get that resistance. So, there’s three great ways. Try and stop at impact. Remember, the club accelerates down and then you’re pulling it into yourself. It’s being pulled into yourself through impact. Okay? You get that feeling by trying to stop at impact. You get that feeling by hitting an impact bag. You get that feeling like like VJ does swinging into some heavy roof. All great ways to get yourself to brace. But definitely when you’re taking practice swings, you know, just hit that ground because it will give you the that brace coming back up. And also the beauty of hitting the ground is teaching you to find the ground, which is essential to hit the golf ball. You’ve got to get that club down. It’s essential to be able to find that ground. So, that’s just a simple great drill. Clearly, don’t be doing it with an iron and a par three T- box or something like that, but do it where you’re not damaging the golf course sole plate. See, I missed it there. I missed the ground there and I dragged. What happened there is I dragged the handle. That handle went past impact like so. I didn’t get lined up at impact with a release. Hit that ground like so. A great way of doing it. Get that brace. And remember, when you’re getting that great brace, like all likelihood is your legs are going to push up to do it. Everything is going to work nicely in sync when you’re bracing up for impact drag or bracing up at impact. Loads of nice ways of doing it there. Remember, brace for impact. Wonderful straightforward information presented in a simple to understand and copy format. Loving the tips, 🙏🏻👍
Brilliant as always ! Can I request suggest a video on ball flight/flights pleases maybe with irons and or drivers showing down the line with some ball tracer, to show maybe what people should be seeing be it height or shape wise to maybe dispell some myths around common misconceptions of what a good flight should look like, thanks as always for these videos
Thanks for the great advice as always…
Much appreciate your time and effort to help us amateurs….
Good luck with all your golfing, and indeed life endeavours
I, too, would like to see a video of what one considers good ball flight. What should I be seeing when I hit a driver or a long iron or a wedge?
Fantastic tips, more tips regarding the mental side of the game.
Awesome work pads!
Nobody teaches you better than padraig !! Some junior coaching would be appreciated- Graham
For years, I struggled with my driver. I was carrying my 3-wood 220 off the deck—the same as my driver—and couldn’t figure out why. Out of frustration, I tried hitting my driver off the deck—and sure enough, it carried 220.
That’s when the light bulb went off.
I focused on recreating that same feel on the tee, and suddenly I was carrying 250. It turns out, that when the ball was teed up, my unconscious mind was trying to “hit up” on it—causing a wrist flip, and high launch.
After hitting a few shots off the deck and then teeing it up again, my spin dropped with a mid-launch. This video validated the accidental drill and finally made everything make sense.
Thank you 👍
Good tip but a real good way to break a shaft intentionally hitting the ground. Have seen it happen.
I see you are wearing a knee brace. What swing changes and thoughts do you use to minimise knee twisting? The left knee takes a lot of torque. I already do your little step and open the foot a little towards the target.
I don't think I will ever get it and think you have to be born with it, but I will keep trying until I can't try no more.
Green to Tee, is how I am club fellow coaches as GI awardee Volunteers are going. I have newcomers men and women in the 50s and 60s tee of the juniors tees at dusk currently.
Distance will follow. So anything to do with putting, chipping, pitching half swings with short irons, wedges, bump and runs, 8i, 7i even 4-5-6 hybrids.
Chipping out too onto the fairway is a key skill. Loads of people over power the repeat from the other far side rough.
I play parkland so the club 1890s fairways have a lot of overhang branches on very large oaks and hard woods. 100 yard pitch and runs with hybrids/ 7w/ 5w with the below head head is a must.
Great video as always! Is there a video on fairway woods? I can't find one.
I hit balls regularly on the beach and have been doing it over 40 years, like Christy snr (himself)
I'd love to improve my iron play even more, is there any tips to help, cheers Padraig
Thank you Padraig, again! Low spinning pitch, any insights?
Recently had a course lesson. Bruising turf or taking a small divot in practice swing and holding finish until ball lands were main points. Seem to be hitting a lot better since
Awesome video. Paddy do a how to hit fairway woods video! Thank you!
Hi Padraig,
I’d like a video on when you bow the left wrist to shut the club face? Is it in the backswing or the downswing?
And, how do you get an in to out club path?
hey Paddy, so great lessons, thanks for your generosity ! any tips for shanks in small pitch shots ???
I did find this helpful. This is one of those moves everyone sees but nobody talks about. I've watched Bobby Jones videos and he does it. Thank you for sharing, keep sending them.
Great video! I would like to see one for hitting below your feet and other situations. (ie uphill or downhill lie) Cheers!
Amazing 💥
Paddy I struggle with taking Divots. When I'm playing well i seem to "pick" everything or slightly thin what is the best drill to make sure i have a nice Divot after the ball. Thanks
great content.
something I would add (as it works really well for me) is when I try to stop at impact – i make sure my body doesn't stop turning so the ball starts online.
I know when i missed it left that my body stopped turning thru impact.
So the take home message is to bottom out a couple inches behind the ball, so you are making contact on the up swing for a correct low spin launch.
Hi Padraig: A question. If I'm actively pulling the golf club up at the bottom of my swing, why won't I chicken wing? Does the shoulder turn save me?
I'm curious Padraig. What's the best full swing you can make without a club? From start to finish. I'd like to see it. Enquiring minds want to know. As slow as you can make it. Holding every position for as long as possible. Thanks.
Thanks
Can’t thank you enough sir. These lessons are fantastic.
Game of opposites, if you want to hit it far, stop at impact.
What happened to your new series of getting g to si glue digit?
I would be interested in the mental side of the game and advice on passing past barriers when we are stuck on breaking 80's and so on.
What has worked well for you or advice you have received Mr Harrington, to shoot past certain scores u have issues getting past by?
I am way beyond the swing advice cause as an advanced player i believe once you can strategically place the ball where you wanted to attack the golf course, it's when golf starts to be fun. Thank you very much for all you do for us, hardcore golfers. I respect you and appreciate you Sir.
Thanks for another great golf tip Padraig! You’re the best golf teacher on YouTube.😃⛳️
Paddy !!! Do a detailed wedge swing lesson on setup, swing, impact positions & "feels" on 50-120 yard shots!!
I'm terrible at those shots and I'm a 4 handicap. I might as well pick those up and toss them…I'd do just as well as with a wedge.
Another gem from you Paddy – thank you for that ! How do you start your golf swing ? Would greatly appreciate your thoughts on that ..
This was a great video. At the end you missed the ground and said you dragged the handle and did not line up the shaft at impact and release the club. Can you do a video on the difference between swings that drag the handle and rotate hard vs swings that are flowing with a full release and higher speeds? Thank you.
Paddy any tips on how to get rid of repetitive injuries from playing golf…..things like tennis elbow and golfers elbow?
I loved the fact, he grabbed a bag, but didn’t No, what was in it ⛳️ keep em coming Paddy
Great video! Any tips or strategy for ball above feet shots especially with long irons, hybrids or fairway woods? Thanks
Paddy is the daddy!!!
Legend
Paddy has been eating good these days lol
What’s the feeling in the arms wrists and hands…is the body braced and the arms loose…or is the whole “system” rigid?
podrick ? not padraig ?
Fantastic simple information!!
I’d be interested to hear more about how the various clubs should interact with the ground. Maybe some closeups and talking about how the sole of woods and irons interact with the turf. Maybe through feel or thoughts.
Padraig please do one for slicing the driver right , it’s killing my game and I do everything else so good…! Cheers from Ballyroan
Brilliant stuff as usual! One question I’d love to see in a future video is more about the ‘pulling up’ move at impact. I’ve heard you mention this in other videos, but not something I’ve heard anyone else talk about. Is that just a feel/swing thought that may work as part of releasing the head, or are you physically pulling the butt into the body, softening the elbows at impact etc? I’ve played around with it on the range but so far just moves the strike around for me. Feel like it deserves a bit more focus if it could be a magic move for some! Thanks
Great video, I have a suggestion which is more to help really, is there a drill to stop the trail leg locking on the takeaway which locks the pelvis and hinders the rotation? Keep up the great work.
Suggestion for future video. Your video says we need to use extreme force at impact however we are also told to have a soft grip and a relaxed Ernie Els style swing . I don’t understand how we resolve these two apparently conflicting ideas . Thanks Paddy .
You could hurt your wrists- listen to the man, he knows 😂
