This summer marks the official opening of the National Golf & Country Club (NGCC), the largest golf club in Southeastern Europe. Located just 30 kilometers from Bucharest, in Niculești, Dâmbovița County, the club spans 75 hectares and features a championship-level 18-hole golf course, a residential complex of 173 villas and 111 apartments, a fine-dining restaurant, dedicated event spaces for both corporate and private functions, and additional amenities such as tennis courts, a swimming pool, leisure areas, and playgrounds for children.
“Our vision was to create more than a golf course – we wanted to establish an international benchmark for Romania, a place that brings together sport, architecture, hospitality, and a strong sense of community. National Golf & Country Club is the result of a long-term commitment to excellence. We aim not only to bring Romanian golf enthusiasts back home, but also to attract a global audience seeking authentic, high-quality experiences. We believe Romania deserves such a destination, and that it can become a regional point of reference in the year sahead,” said Metin Doğan, Founder of National Golf & Country Club.
The National Golf & Country Club golf course was designed by the internationally acclaimed Stirling & Martin Golf Course Architects and built to championship standards. Opened to both amateur and professional players in the summer of 2024, the course has already hosted over 35 tournaments, welcoming more than 4,300 individual players and approximately 1,300 tournament participants from Romania, the rest of Europe, the United Kingdom, and Asia.
The club aims to host serve as a qualifying platform for prestigious international competitions. One of these is the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC), which was held in Romania for the first time on May 18, with NGCC as the official host venue. This tournament provides amateur players with a rare opportunity to compete in a professional setting, with significant stakes: winners of the national stages will represent Romania at the world finals, held in Korea from October 30 to November 8, 2025, alongside teams from over 40 countries.
In addition to its competitive calendar, NGCC will also launch a dedicated Golf Academy for beginners, juniors, and future Romanian players. This initiative aims to build a strong local golf community while supporting performance development through foundational programs, educational partnerships, and annual competitions.
“With the club nearing full operational capacity, we believe Romania is now firmly positioned on the map of Europe’s top golf destinations. This launch comes at a time when luxury and premium experiences are increasingly visible locally – from hotels such as Corinthia to high-end brands like Zegna and Louis Vuitton. In short, we want to help turn Bucharest into a destination that welcomes global elites in sports, business, and the arts,” added Metin Doğan.
With an initial investment of €60 million, NGCC represents one of the most significant private investments in Romanian sports to date. It offers local golf enthusiasts a real alternative to traveling abroad – particularly to neighboring countries like Bulgaria – by delivering a complete, world-class golf and lifestyle experience close to home.
