Now, I don’t have the swing footage of that round, but I do have the lesson that I learned. So, the problem that I had during my golf swing that I was aware of, but I had no idea how to look into fixing was the fact that I was creating too much lag. In particular, with the driver during my down, which was causing the club head to get very close to my trail shoulder. To create lag, you get loads of speed from this, which is great, but it becomes sometimes, well, it did for me. It became very difficult to control the club face. I was hitting shots that were blasting well off to the right, hooking well to the left, and I couldn’t figure out why this was the case. If I was able to generate so much speed and get my club into a really good position on the down swing, why was this happening? So, the reason is when we just take this video on the screen now, you can see here, this is actually me working on this issue at the Belelfrey driving range. As I make my way into the down swing, you can see here how much the club lags into that down swing. And then what happens for me as the club reaches pretty much parallel in relation to the ground. So this point here, my body stalls. As my body stalls, my arms have no choice then but to do this action here, they almost crunch inwards like this here. So all my speed, all my power has come from this action here. And then because the face has to release, I end up doing this. Now, I’ve been working on trying to hold off the club face for very long to help compress my irions, but also to help me get my hands leading the race to the golf ball, in particular with irons, a little bit less with driver to help for that compression. But what Graeme said for me to do instead, and this is what I’ve never noticed before, never noticed this drill, but it’s worked wonders for me, is that he suggested once I get to the top of my swing as I come down, the feeling is for me to let go. Let go of the angle, don’t let my arms fold in. So the only way for me to stop my arms from folding inwards was to feel like I was swinging through but allow my arm to release over. Now this is more of a forearm rotation release rotational release as opposed to using my wrists and hands. It will feel obviously like I’m releasing them over, but it’s all coming from the left arm folding and going from this internally rotated movement on the way back to externally rotated on the way through. So to begin with, he actually got me working on swinging up to the top and just getting me to let go of the club as I made my way into the down swing, applying the speed and trying to stop as quickly as I could. Applying the speed allowed my body to then initiate and rotate. And then to pause and hold this position here and letting go of my trail hand allowed my lead arm to rotate over naturally into the correct position on the way through. This here is going to allow me it allowed me to rotate that club face just a little bit over to square things up at impact. As long as I created speed, that club face was never going to close down too much for me. So rather than seeing too much of this angle here and holding it and then last minute having to conjure it up last minute, I was being taught to release it over. And as long as I created speed, I was able to square up the club face. And when I went out onto the golf course, I noticed huge improvements with my drivers. I was so confident. I was hitting the ball further than ever before and much straighter than ever before. And the only video that I’ve got for proof is the video that I showed you before on the driving range where I’ve tried my absolute hardest from this latch position here to feel that release taking place on the way through. So there’s the fix. There’s the feel that I had from going from this very much so rigid impact position where my lead arm in particular would be very much in a flexed position getting very disconnected from the body to closer to the body which was the aim and to get that more rotational release of the arm. The question is if that is something that you’re struggling with in your golf game how can you fix this with the driver and then also with the irons as well. Before we dive into that, if you are new to the channel, I do offer in-person lessons and online lessons as well. So, when we take a look at the way driver versus irons work in the golf swing, driver in particular, we want to be hitting more up on the golf ball. So, what my colleague Graeme had me doing was when I set up to the golf ball, I was having this feeling on the way through where I was allowing my arm to really release over like so with my trail arm fully extended but still rotating over like this here. When I set up to this golf ball, the first drive I tried doing this was getting up to the top and literally feeling this on the way through. That was the thought. As I swung to the top, I was thinking, right, as long as I swing fast, it’s never going to go left. And it’s a bit of a test on this hole, although it’s virtual golf rather than obviously being at Pebble Beach on the 18th hole. But it’s a big test for me just to practice this just to ensure I wasn’t going to hit them left. So, a little bit of hook spin on that one, hitting that ever so slightly more out the toe because there was something else that I wasn’t exactly doing that Graeme added in. So, as well as the feeling of me getting this release in the lead arm on the way through, stopping with the lead arm, letting go of my right hand, feeling this sensation here for driver in particular to help with reducing this lag because that was causing me to hold the angle and open the face up too much. If I could feel like my arms were staying tucked in, we actually had a towel and placed it underneath my arms and we kept my arms tucked in with the feeling of pushing my hands away to keep the width of arc nice and wide. That just made it much easier on the way down to control the face and hit the golf ball out the center of the driver. So, a couple of rehearsals here with the towel. just really pushing my hands away, allowing this full turn to take place on the way back with driver. Then the feeling on the way through was getting that release. And if I get that release correct, you can see there I’m able to easily keep this towel in. As soon as my lead arm would move away, the towel would fall out. So, one last shot with driver before we move on to taking a look at how this works for the irons. Keeping those arms nice and tucked in. Keeping that wide arc on the way back and on the way through. And just focusing on getting that release of the lead arm as we hit the golf ball. You can see there less curvature on the golf shot, much better contact as well. And that one has definitely gone that little bit further as well. So, let’s take a look now then at how they should work with the irons because there is one little thing that changes ever so slightly just to ensure we get rather than that upward motion into the golf ball with driver, the downward motion we want with the irons. So, when it comes to hitting the irons, one thing in particular that I had to be careful of when I was practicing getting this release on the way through was not doing it too much. Now, it was very easy for me to do it too much with the irions as opposed to doing it too much with the driver because of driver, we want to be hitting more up on the golf ball, but also because it’s a heavier and longer golf club, it’s easier to generate more speed, which means it’s easier to leave the face more open. So, therefore, it requires more of this release here, this forearm rotational release to be able to get that club face back to square. irons. If we were to do that, lighter and shorter golf clubs, it’s going to encourage the face to close down too much. So, I was noticing a few shots. Start straight and curve too far left. So instead, what Graeme got me doing was the feeling of swinging up to the top, keeping this really nice and wide back swing with the towel still tucked in underneath my arms, and then from there allowing almost my belt buckle itself to push up and point at the target. Now, if I was to do that, that was going to allow me to get my body turning and rotating upwards to give myself room to extend this lead arm and then square up the face at the golf ball. If I was to stay down, what are we going to have to do? This action again. So, just applying that feeling on the way through. For me, it just feels like I’m getting more forward, pushing and transferring my weight forward as I work on this release, letting go of my trail arm to get that release on the way through. So, it also feels like I’m pushing up from the ground to get my buckle to face towards the target. So, nice and wide on the way back. Buckle to target. Still getting that release. That was the feeling. That’s the only difference there between the driver and the irons. The driver, we can hold back a bit more and allow that to release. I want to be getting a bit more forward to compress the golf ball. So, six iron here, 209 yds. Tricky one. This is This is just out of my sixiron range. I’m going to have to step on this one. Let’s see if I can get that pure strike to get it there. That was nice again. That’s got to be pretty good surely. Oh, lovely bounce right next to the pin. I’ll take that one for the final shot. Very usefull 🙏
I really like this as it feels a more natural and efficient way to create speed in the swing. However is it not in contradiction a little bit with other posts about holding the right wrist in extension etc and the use of the precision impact. To be clear I think you’re a really under rated YouTube instructor and I always look out for your latest videos. Just keen to get your thoughts on the above.
I like the idea Harry of "pushing the hands" away, thus extending the arms. This, together with the upper arms tucked into the armpits and forearm rotation is something I've been working on! I really like this 18th hole at Pebble Beach! You played it well Harry!
