Angel Cabrera’s golfing comeback reached a new pinnacle on Sunday, as the Argentine clinched a major victory on the Champions Tour by winning the Regions Tradition.

Cabrera, who made his return to major tournaments at last month’s Masters at Augusta National, served 30 months in three different facilities after being found guilty of assaulting two former girlfriends. After his release at the end of 2022, the ex-Masters champion has been charting a course back into professional golf.

Eighteen months since his competitive return to the sport, the seasoned player has notched two wins on the Champions Tour, following up his victory in Florida last month with a major win at the Regions Tradition.

Cabrera turned back the clock in the first senior major of the year, holding off Jerry Kelly and Y. E. Yang to claim the title at Greystone Golf and Country Club and pocket $390,000 in prize money. The South American’s stellar final round performance was key to his victory.

Cabrera racked up nine birdies across his final 18 holes and only one bogey, carding an impressive eight-under-par 64 to edge out Kelly by a single stroke. Reflecting afterwards, the 55 year old looked back on the journey he had undertaken in recent years before becoming a winner once more.

“To tell you the truth, starting again this morning, I was very nervous,” Cabrera revealed. “But I needed to be calm, and I had to trust myself. It brings a lot of thoughts into my mind. It was very hard, the stuff I went through, so there’s a lot going on in my mind right now.

“It’s hard to process. To win a major is incredible, so I’m very proud. I played very well all week. I had to trust myself and keep going, and it paid off.”

This victory tops an extraordinary few months for Cabrera, starting with his first Champions Tour victory at the James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational in April.

A week after his debut win, he made a notable return to Augusta for the first time since his conviction by using his past champion exemption to compete in the Masters. In reflecting on his journey, Cabrera expressed regret for his actions which resulted in a 30-month prison term.

“I respect their opinion, and everybody has their own opinion, and I respect that,” he commented on those critics in Georgia. “Life has given me another opportunity. I have to take advantage of that, and I want to do the right things in this second opportunity.

“There was a stage in my life of five years, four, five years, that they weren’t the right things I should have done. Before that, I was okay, so I just have to keep doing what I know I can do right.

“Obviously, I regret things that happened and you learn from them, but at the same time, those are in the past and we have to look forward to what’s coming.”

Cabrera was also linked to Rory McIlroy’s triumph in the Grand Slam, as the Northern Irishman divulged that the Argentine had left him a well-wishing note in the locker room before he embarked on his final round.
