Want to learn how to compress your wedges and hit them lower, farther, and with more control? In this video, I break down the exact setup and swing keys you need to finally stop ballooning your wedges and start pin-hunting with confidence.
The secret? It all starts at address: ✅ Use a narrower stance for better balance
✅ Get closer to the ball to shallow the angle
✅ Choke down one inch on the grip for more control
✅ Swing with a 3/4 mindset, not full throttle — that’s how the pros do it
This lesson will help you eliminate chunked shots and spinny floaters by dialing in your wedge distance control, ball flight, and compression. Whether you’re hitting a gap wedge, sand wedge, or pitching wedge — this is the blueprint for mastering your scoring clubs.

I can hit my 56 115 yards if I wanted to. I never will and I never will hit it more than 100. It’s just the mindset. It’s all about accuracy. I get an inch narrower. I get an inch closer. I grip down an inch. Well, I have one of my favorite students out here right now, Kaylee Yun. She’s going to be a freshman at Long Beach State University. You were talking about you weren’t quite compressing your wedges, right? Yeah. Little bit thin. Yeah, it’s mainly thin. And mainly thin. Um, set up where you’re comfortable. We’re going to get right into it. Okay. And you guys will see right away. This is a beautiful golf swing. She’s got one of my favorite swings. Good. Okay. Good. So, so here’s the big thing. What I find that a lot of people do with wedges is they set up to wedges like they would set up to a nine iron. Um, and and and then they end up swinging kind of like a nine iron and expecting to compress wedges. Now, here here’s the thing. I have a sand wedge in my hand here. One thing I do, and I’ve always done this. I grip down a little bit on my wedges all the time. Now, I’ve been taught one thing. the firmer that I am here, the firmer that I am here. So, we were just doing a video on forward shaft lean up top. And the funny thing about that is I have a better time controlling the golf club and having that forward shaft lean when I actually grip down on the golf club. Okay, so gripping down will do what? It’ll get you actually closer to the ball as well. Here’s my nine iron setup right here. Now, watch how different this is. Here’s my sand wedge setup. See how See how it almost looks like a long chip? Oh yeah. So it’s literally like looks like a long chip. Now you can see there even the swing was more of like a little 3/4 shoulderto-shoulder knockdown. So I I want to do two things for you today. I want to talk about your setup and I want to talk about the mindset that you have when you swing. Okay. So first things first, setup. I call it like one one and one. What do I mean? I get an inch narrower. I get an inch closer. I grip down an inch. And all of that is more of like a knockdown shot. Now, if you were to watch me hit a wedge and then I pulled out a seven iron and made the same swing. It would literally be like my knockdown shot taking 10 yards off, hitting it underneath the wind out in a windy day. Okay. So, my big thing for you is I watch you set up and this is so common with everybody. They just get too far away from the wedge and unfortunately they just don’t have the angle of attack they need to have. When I get closer, the club works down on top of the ball more. So watch, I can get really close to this wedge right here. Really close. And watch. You’ll see. See how easy it is for me to hit down on that ball. Nice divot. Ball goes right down the line. That’s the first thing. And I would tell you right now, it’s not going to get far past that. The other thing is Kev took a video from you from the face on. I do want to see you bumped your hips without your hands. Oh, so you left your hands a little back. I’d love to see you just get your hands up a little bit more centered with your body. I’m not saying we need a big forward press. We just need the hip and the grip to move a little bit together. Okay. So, that’ll give you a little more of that impact feeling before you even pull the trigger. If you did just that and you did the one one and one where you were like, I’m going to go an inch narrower. Why narrower? more Vshape at the bottom. Okay? If I get wider, it’s more U-shaped. That’s why a driver is wider. It’s why a wedge is narrower. We grip down a little bit. Well, guess what that does? Little firmer here. A little more control throughout the swing. Okay? So, and then getting closer the last inch, that just gets the club more on top of the golf ball without having to try to get steep. So, we do all that. We get a little bit of the handle bumping forward. And guess what? You’re going to be compressing the ball with the exact same swing you make. Now, I will tell you this. You always hear me talk about it. We used you used to always hear me talk about this. Every every lesson you shove, I go three/4er swing for those wedges, right? You’d always get the little extra. Yeah. You really want to feel and I’m kid you not. A full swing with a wedge, you guys. A full swing with a wedge is a three/4er swing. Okay. So, this is me. And look at I’ll hit a This is my 56 degree. This literally is as much as I would possibly swing with 56. Like that’s my that’s going to fly 100 yards right there. And that’s as far as I’d ever hit a 56. Typically it’s like a 95 to 100 yard shot for me. So with that being said, um I think that mindset of 3/4 knockdown, all the things we just talked about in the setup, I can hit my 56 115 yards if I wanted to. I never will and I never will hit it more than 100. It’s just the mindset. You just don’t need This is not a golf club where there actually is a statistic for carry distance or like you’re, you know, your driving distance, right? It’s all about accuracy. So, just taking a little yardage off, hitting a little knockdown shot, you find easy compression that way and the and the shots will be much more consistent. Okay, so here we go. Let’s let’s get right in here. Okay, let’s start talking about Okay, so from the face on view first, just the little bit of press forward with the hip, with the handle. So, don’t leave the handle behind. Good. Yeah. Now, a little closer. Mhm. A little narrower. Exactly. And when you see she has that beautiful hip bump we always preach. When the stance is narrower, that actually gets a little more weight on the left side. So, that’s perfect right there. And all I want to see you do is just hit some three quarter knockdown shots for me. Like div it past the ball feeling. Okay. And there’s your best one of the day by far. Oh yeah. And look at guys, come over here. Take a look at this. Look at her first divot. So Kev, get get on in here if you can. This was the divot she just made right here. And look how the full club face is in the ground the whole way. Perfect dollar bill right there. Look at that. Guys, if you’re not compressing your wedges, check and make sure you’re not too wide. Check and make sure you’re not too far. Okay. if you’re too far and too wide. Those are two things I see all the time and people just either scoop them off the surface and hit it way too high or they hit too many chunks and too many in too many thin shots. You know, the reason why the chunk and the thin well the angle of attack is so shallow because of the wide stance of being too far. They either catch the ground or miss the ground and either one’s going to be heavy or thin. And even if you hit it good, it’s like a picked scoopy one that’s not really clean. Yeah. Anyways, that’s that. And then the last thing for you, which um was just a personal thing to you, the hip and the grip just had to go a little more together. That just gets you a little more engaged right there. Um something last thing to talk about. If we’re wide, you guys, and we bump our hip, that doesn’t necessarily put weight on the front foot. My upper body is being supported by more of the inside of my right leg, and I have feel more here. That’s why with a driver, we’re 6040. Now I then get a wedge and I get the right width or even narrower, right? I make that same inch hip bump. Well, now it’s pretty significant. Now I can feel a good amount of weight on my left side, approximately 70%. Okay. Yeah. Awesome. There you go. Questo video è la cosa migliore che ci sia capitata da molto tempo a questa parte. Ora abbiamo un nuovo modo di passare il tempo insieme😚
Great student ! Tips are spot on.
I was just doing some wedge shots as practice. This was perfect timing. Good revealing lesson.
Thanks 👍 😊
Hey Adam. I’m quite steep with my wedges. Should I feel like I’m swinging out to the right more to shallow out the path? Or am I going about it the wrong way?
Giving us your years of lessons for free is like buried treasure
🙏
Love this guy !
Thanks Doc
The 1-1-1 rule is golden. Thanks for the wedge tip. I always swing my wedge shots like full 9 irons and would wonder what the heck I’m doing wrong. Adam just explained it very clear to me. I learn something every time Mr. Porzak releases a new video. Thanks Sir.
I think i tend to get a little too wide with almost every club. Thank you adam.
Do you address the ball slightly towards the hosel? What is the reason for this?
Such an amazing communicator! He explains his ideas crystal clearly
I totally love this stuff , i have to be honest though i tend to open up my stance and cut my wedges , i dont know why because i tend toward a draw with irons but really really like a super high fadey drop and stop with wedges ( i only use pw and 52 ) . I just find it far far easier to get a pure connection with a little out to in on higher lofts and wind or no wind much easier to control the ball to target if you get it up high and spinning than if you rely on punching it , i just feel the window is bigger with an open cut over a punch and the bad outcome a bit less volatile , personal preference of course and horses for courses when a punch is the shot then its the shot but i see this low spinner as being the ‘tour preferred shot’ and then watch shots back up off the green from 2ft time and time again . Is it just to sell new grooves ?
Just what I was looking for, many thanks.
