LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The Lynchburg community is coming together to honor the memory of Cash Gaudio, a teenager who was tragically shot and killed in his driveway last year.

Family and friends are organizing a golf tournament in his honor, called the Swing for Cash Golf Classic, which will take place on Tuesday.

Shannon Meyers, Cash’s mother, expressed her gratitude for the community’s support. “I can’t imagine not having this and not having the support and not ensuring that Cash is remembered,” she said.

The event will feature 28 teams of four, with all proceeds going to the Live Like Cash Gaudio Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports student athletes.

Micah Gaudio, Cash’s father, shared his appreciation for the community’s remembrance of his son. “When you lose a child, it’s one of the worst things that could ever happen to you. And it’s just awesome that the community is there and they haven’t forgotten him,” he said.

Friends of Cash are also thankful for the community’s support and are eager for the tournament as a way to keep his memory alive. Gabriel Provost remarked, “It was just an idea, and it turned into something that everyone knows about, and it’s just like it’s all such for a great cause, and it’s really special.”

Terrance White, a friend of Cash, added, “I’m overwhelmed with joy, there’s still good in the world in such evil times. It’s really uplifting.”

Shelley Kist, Cash’s former teacher, reflected on his impact, saying, “I’ve been teaching for a long time and Cash isn’t just 1 in a million to me, he’s literally one in a lifetime.”

The tournament will begin with players teeing off at 1:30 p.m. at the London Downs Golf Course.
