So many of the common swings faults that i see day to day can be traced back to what the arms are doing in the downswing, and often these faults are present due to a lack of understanding when it comes to what the arms should actually do during the downswing.
In this lesson I want to keep things really simple and teach you exactly how to fire the arms in the downswing so that you can take this information and drill to improve your swing right away. You will first learn the basketball throw drill which quickly gives you the exact feel that you will need in your downswing before then learning how to transfer this to a golf swing.
This drill and lesson can help you eradicate slice shots, fat shots, standing up through the ball plus many more of the faults that you may experience, this drill and exercise has helped so many of my students hit it better than ever so i’m confident that it can do the same for you
As always I really hope you find some value in this lesson and id love to hear your thoughts in the comments and ill get back to you as soon as I can
Chris

Would this be the same for driver as well? Except of course for change in set up
Brilliant stuff, thanks Chris.! I was once told to "rake down the imaginary wall" behind me, but that just didn't work as it was too much to connect with the body turn – but this looks very doable.
I also now get why I've been pulling a lot of shots left by turning my shoulders too early.
Thanks!
One of the best videos on this channel.
Don't want to jinx it, but had far and away the best ball striking nine holes of my life after watching this. Hit five of my last six GIR and was 15 feet away putting from the fringe on the sixth as a low 20s handicap and never felt so good standing over the ball using this as my swing thought
Another excellent tutorial Chris. Don’t know chat happened about 8 minutes in, but you were talking about the pump drill and the video went back to you throwing a basketball into the ground
All of this can be solved by standing 5" farther from the ball. The standard setup makes you COMPENSATE for standing too close. With your lead hand in full ulnar deviation, bend until the heel of your club is at the ball. Now you have room to let your trail elbow clear the hip without all the contortions. It's simpler, will save your back, and improve your swing. It's called the Single Plane Swing.
I think there is a problem with video starting at 8:05. You are talking about some golf shot and video shows you throwing basketball to the ground.
This lesson led me to make better contact and straighter shots. I had to feel the dropping of the hands before turning. That’s just the feel for me. Probably because I was so used to turning from the top with shoulders. Another benefit of this lesson is that forces you to have patience at the top of the backswing leading to a better synchronization. Thank you Chris.

How good is this? I'm struggling so much with my golf and getting despondent but after watching this i feel i want to get back on the course and try again. Thanks
Seems to be a problem with the edit 😧at around 8:10 in. Otherwise another great video.
Wow, you have just demystified my golf swing. Thank you so much!
" Vertical drop, horizontal tug "
This is exactly the same as the tip Bryson Dechambeau shows and it works brilliantly. But I really liked your detailed explanation Chris because it gives so many checkpoints.
Great video Chris, thank you.
You say elbows connect to the upper chest, do you mean stuck to it.I tried but a huge loss of distancde
Nailed it! I have been pulling my irons. It felt like my hands were ahead of my hips and I was rotating off the ball and standing up. Thank you so much for this video. It is a perfect explanation of what is going on.
Wow great explanation
This drill also good for the driver swing training?
Bad Golfer
Gold!
Great video explanation tips
I think this is exactly my problem. I’ve been struggling with a bad left miss. I do wish I had someone local who could help as well. But this is a great start
One of the best videos I've seen. Why have NONE of my in-person instructors in the past ever presented this concept?
Great video and explanation and drills!
Excellent drill for me, work beautifully with my iron. But not quite working with my driver, don't understand why.

I am an 83 yr old woman and I tried this. Men are stopping and can not believe that I am hitting the ball so well!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, that is Justin Rose's swing drill. Says it's one of his own. Think it's a great shame that he ties himself up in knots with impractical swing theories like that. And, that is one thing that Bobby Jones warns us about at the end of his instructional video. Justin's swing drill actually cost him the Open last year. When a player has such a complexed routine it becomes high maintenance; and, they are constantly trying to get a feel from it. And, when a player is coming down the stretch and their opponent sees them constantly going through the same rigmarole it gives them confidence. No player fears a player who has to go through that kind of routine before every shot. And, as a consequence Xander was able to coast home. And, the simple fact is that if a player gets into the correct position at the top they won't come over the top. And, one consequence of the pump drill is that it increases arm separation. And, the arms should reduce arm separation in the transition
Love how I’ve had 3 different instructors and none of them told me to do this but this is exactly what fixed me. Lots of bad instructors out there.
This is incredible and what I’ve been trying to work on for the last few months. One lingering question I have that I haven’t been able to find the answer to; during the transitional hand drop, while the chest stays back, where should I aim my hands in space? Should it be a directly vertical drop? Should my hands drop in the middle of my right foot two feet away from the target? Over my right heel, etc? What would you say is a good target to aim my hands at during this drop? Thanks in advance!
Brilliant thank you
You described my single biggest challenge with my swing. The feeling is always like my arms want to control everything. Whitch results in everything you pointed out. Trying this ball drill — thank you for this video!
Fantastic video Chris. Any suggestions on how low to drop arms before turning shoulders?
I love this technique, I'm hitting all my club longer accept for my driver, I'm topping it!!!😢😢😢
Perfect…just in time. I was bringing my arms down but not timing my turn properly and it hurts when your club goes six feet in the ground..haha..So than I started swinging my arms out and than.. yes swinging over the top.Great lesson for me. Thanks Chris.
Excellent vid, thank you, explained it and demonstrated it very clearly, and I could really get the feel of it. I used a small cushion in place of a ball so I could try it indoors, and I'm thinking a beanbag would work very well.
BRILLIANT!!! Really well put together.
The simple way to think about this. is to realize that when we view the left hand in the downswing in good golfers we see that when the left hand reaches in front of the trail leg in the downswing . the left hand remains internally rotated so the back of the left hand faces directly AWAY from the golfer. ( left hand internally rotated). The left hand rotates 90 degrees in a split second and this occurs by the rotation of the body not by independent rotation of the left hand.
Many golfers try to square the club face by rotating the left wrist very early in the downswing. It must be delayed until the body rotation closes the face.
This tip just saved my golf game for the summer. Was struggling with 20 swing thoughts and this brought all of them together – feel like I'm actually swinging the club again as opposed to trying to manoeuvre it into different positions. If I ever get the chance to buy you a beer @chrisryangolf I'll buy you several!
Would not it. be easier to address the ball with a very. strong grip so that the left arm is rotated internally as far as possible so that the left hand is on TOP of the grip so that the left elbow is pointing to the target with extreme rotation of the entire left arm. Then it would be easy to rotate the left arm and hand to close the clubface through impact.
