[Music] A breathtaking island in the Indian Ocean with beauty on land and underwater. Mauritius is often seen as the ultimate honeymoon destination. And believe me, I get it. But I’m here to show you that it’s also so much more than that. A melting pot of cultures, epic landscapes, and some of the most mouthwatering food I’ve ever had. From temple visits and sunset cocktails to swimming with dolphins and flying over an underwater waterfall, this island has so much to offer. For my 23rd African country, I couldn’t have picked a better destination. [Music] In this video, I’ll take you along our 10-day journey across Maitius. We explored the island from the north to the south and stayed in a local Airbnb, a mid-range all-inclusive, and a five-star luxury resort. If you’re wondering where to stay, which parts of the island to explore, and the best activities to experience, this video will help you plan your perfect Maitius adventure. Whether you’re honeymooning or just here for the soft [Music] life, flying in from South Africa with Air Maicius, I kicked off this bucketless vacation in style. For an in-depth look, check out my Air Maicius business class video on land. The Maitius adventure started in the north in a little town called Grango. My friend Neils and I booked a cozy Airbnb with two bedrooms where we were welcomed the Maitian way with a cold beer and a home-cooked meal by the lovely owners. Staying in local Airbnbs like this not only supports the community, but it also gives you a way more authentic experience and the food always better than any hotel buffet. This spot supports local and is womanowned. I’ll leave the link in the description. Mauritius is famous as a honeymoon destination, but trust me, it’s just as fun when you’re traveling with your best friend. After the delicious first meal, our first stop was the beach, of course. We found a beautiful local spot within walking distance of our Airbnb. Indian Ocean water as warm as a bath, a few friendly stray dogs keeping us company, and that unmistakable feeling of finally being on island time, where the only thing on your to-do list is to decide which pair of sunglasses to wear. Today, we’re at this beach. I forgot the name actually, which is not so far from our Airbnb. And we wanted to go for a little dip cuz it’s the first real day in Maicius, but it’s very empty. Um, which is actually really nice. There are only local people here, but no one’s in the water. So, you know, me as the de half Somali, I’m like, I’m not going to swim here if no one else is there. But Neil is having a little dip and he says the water’s really nice and warm. Yeah. He’s just saying he can’t believe how warm the water is. Welcome to the Indian [Music] Ocean. Later that night, we headed to Kam Bay, one of the livelier hubs in the north. Dinner at Lugai Crayola, complete with live [Music] music and local seafood dishes that seriously hit the spot. [Music] The next morning, we started with one of our favorite things, a good breakfast. We found this cute little spot called The Good Cafe. A total hipster haven with great breakfast options and great merch. We had this seriously good berry French toast complete with watermelon salad because vacation calories don’t count, right? I love a good coffee that says welcome to the island. Fueled up and ready to go, our next stop was the beach, of course. Okay, just warning that this is a recurring trend here. We tried Per Bear Beach. I’m still not quite sure how to pronounce it. Recommended by our neighbor. This was a great spot, but also super busy, which is why I didn’t film too much. But it was so cool to see so many families come together and spend a nice day by the beach here. After a good swim and some suntanning, we took our time strolling through Grand Bay, popping into cute little shops and soaking up that laidback energy. By late afternoon, it was time to catch the sunset. We headed to The Cloud, a rooftop bar that lives up to the hype for sundowners with a view. Once the sun set, we were seriously starved and decided to check out one of the bougie hotels, the Lux Gone Bay, for luxurious snacks. Fresh oysters. If you don’t want to splurge on an expensive hotel stay, you can always sneak in for a drink and a few oysters. Soft life on a budget, aka girl mask. [Music] Hello. Did you miss me? And because Maitius knows how to keep the night going, we ended up checking out some of the night life in Gome Bay, too. This place was called Enjoy. And let’s just say we did. The next day called for a slow start, and what better way than brunch. We found another hip gem called Bloom with excellent coffee. No, really. It was excellent. Healthy bowls and just the right chill vibe to recover from a night out. If I had to plan the north segment of our trip again, I’d skip staying in Kong Gulp and base myself right in Kong Bay. This is where the action is and we found ourselves driving there almost every day anyway. But the real highlight of the day, we ventured out just a little further and spent the afternoon chilling out, maxing and relaxing our coup by Laage by Evacco Beach Club. And yes, in case you’re wondering, snorkeling does count as shooting some Vibo outside of the school. This beach club by Tour Beach was one of my favorite beaches on the island. Lounge chairs right by the water. Good service and really nice snorkeling straight off the beach. [Music] The sunset. That was honestly so nice as well. I was really sad to leave this place. This beach club chill day made me fully settle into holiday [Music] mode. For our last evening, we stumbled across an absolute hidden gem called Latalier. The vibe was so cool. African chic decor and the waiter. One of the loveliest people we met on the whole trip. [Music] After some refreshing GMTs, we kicked off dinner with a crab cake that was no exaggeration. Unbelievable. Yeah. Oh my god. Okay. I had a whole fresh fish served with pasta and meals after days of glorious seafood switched gears and ordered some meat. We finished it all off with creme brulee. The waiter also introduced us to Maitian rum. They had it in different flavors. And after a couple of tastings, let’s just say I left with a new appreciation for island hospitality. And just like that, our time in the north was coming to an end. But before leaving, we had one more stop to make. The iconic red roof church in Cap Manalura. This spot was absolutely beautiful, perched right by the water and instantly reminded me of one of my favorite places in the world, the Mosque of the Divinity in Dhaka, Saga. There’s just something magical about places of worship that stand right at the edge of the ocean. And just next to the church, we found another gem, Laas Sundine. A nononsense, no gimmicks local seafood restaurant. You pick your fresh catch of the day, have it expertly grilled and eaten right there with a view of the ocean and the red church. Honestly, we lowkey were mad at ourselves for not coming here sooner. La Sundine easily became one of the highlights of our stay in the north. [Music] Bye-bye to the north and hello to the south. Our next stop, Lamar. Probably the most recognizable part of Maitius thanks to that iconic mountain. This time we swapped our cozy Airbnb for five-star luxury at Lux Lmore. We were welcomed with mocktails shown to a gorgeous room with sleek interiors. Excellent service, of course, and a mini bar that felt like it belonged in a design magazine, as well as a bathroom almost bigger than the bedroom, complete with a bathtub, indoor and outdoor shower. It was giving main character energy. And you already know the drill by now. First order of business, the beach. Time to go to the beach. White Lotus ready at the resort. This was luxury land. And they weren’t playing. infused water in all varieties on tap. Beach loungers with built-in charging ports and call buttons for service, which naturally we tested thoroughly. It started out cloudy, but the sun did come out to play later. On the beach, we met George, a local jewelry seller who spoke excellent German. Yeah, thank you. from okay. He ended up making us custom pieces and I was obsessed with my pearl and seashell necklace. So special. As golden hour hit, it was time to think about dinner. And here’s where things got a little spicy moneywise. We’d booked the Lux on a bed and breakfast basis. And while this sounds like a smart move at first, it landed us in a bit of a pickle come dinner time. That night, the hotel was hosting a special Maitian food buffet, which was booked for us. But rookie mistake on us, we forgot to ask the price before we booked. Turns out at around $100 per person, excluding drinks. Yes. Ouch. But the food was really, really out of this world good. Local specialties, multiple food stations, live cooking, live music, you name it. The curry station alone had more variations than I could count. And the biryani, chef’s kiss. Oh my god, it’s not even 6:00 a.m. Literally 5:30. Pitch black outside, but we booked a little, what do they call it? Dolphin and turtle tour with the boat. So, we’re going to meet Skipper Dam, who’s a really cool guy. Um out by the beach in a little bit. um and he will take us on his boat um outside of the lagoon a little bit further out into the ocean and hopefully hopefully hopefully we will see dolphins and turtles. So I really really can’t wait. This was like one of the bucket list things I wanted to do in Maitius. So I hope we’re lucky. Apparently the success rate is quite good cuz the dolphins are usually there in the morning. So praying So, there we were, literally at the crack of dawn, heading out to sea to meet Dan and his [Music] crew. The further we ventured, the more excited I got. Okay, all of a sudden, the speed changed. We’re very fast now. [Music] And then we saw them. A full pot of dolphins gliding just off the coast. It was already incredible from the boat, but nothing could have prepared me for what was to come [Music] next. Two dolphins swam straight towards us. It felt like they were just as interested in us as we were in them. Then we spotted a mum and her baby dolphin. It was so [Music] cute. Even after we were back on the boat, the dolphin stayed near, swimming right alongside us at the [Music] boat. That view, that feeling. I will never forget it. We saw nothing. And just when I thought the morning had peaked, we ended it by swimming in shallow waters with a [Music] turtle. It truly doesn’t get any better than that. And I live in super super highlight. [Music] like guilty. Then I had to remember they’re not happy. That’s just the shape of their face. After some rest and having learned our lesson at dinner, we left the resort to have some affordable lunch. Luckily, we found this amazing spot called the Chaser Maritian Beastro. First, a celebratory drink to toast the dolphins. But the real star of the show, this delicious octopus curry. The rest of the day was rainy. Perfect for slowing down and simply relaxing because I had another early start ahead of me the next day. Hey, I’m sitting here at the um can I say landing strip because the landing strip today is the ocean. So, I’m here by the lagoon flight. This is the name of the company. Um, and this is really like one of the main attractions in Maitius, especially in Lemon to see the underwater waterfall. And the whole days I I had my booking done. Always book in advance. Two people just showed up actually and wanted to make it a spontaneous booking. And the lady was like, “Nah, we’re fully booked till like 1st of May, which is for like the next half of a month, 3 weeks, which is crazy.” So, you see how popular it is. Um, and all this time I’ve been praying that the weather is good for my flight. And I’m really lucky today. Yesterday was cloudy. It was raining throughout the day. And today it’s looking really good because apparently this illusion of the the different colors of the water which makes up this underwater waterfall is most visible when the weather is nice and the sun is out. So, it’s looking really good. Fingers crossed. [Music] I had so much fun seeing Maitius from the sky. The famous underwater. It’s not actually a real waterfall. It’s an optical illusion caused by sand and silt being pulled off the edge of a submarine plateau. But when you’re flying over it, it looks so [Music] [Music] real. Later that day, when the plane rides had stopped, I flew my drone from the coastline to compare the view. The light wasn’t as dramatic at sunset, but you could still make out the layers pulling downward. Even knowing it’s just an illusion, it still had me staring. I wholeheartedly recommend that you book this experience in advance because it’s really breathtaking. Departure day from Lemon came a little too soon, but not without one last moment of joy. The pastry station at breakfast. Easily my favorite part of the mornings at the Lux. On our way east, we made a quick stop for coffee at Klein, a lovely artisan cafe in Lemore. Strong coffee, good energy. Just what we needed before the road trip ahead. The drive to the east coast was surprisingly beautiful. Winding hills, stretches of forest, and the kind of peaceful green you don’t always expect on a tropical island. We made a stop at K Basang, one of the most sacred Hindu sites in Maitius. Maitius is incredibly diverse with deep Indian, African, and Crayol roots, and the island’s Hindu heritage is especially present here. Two giant statues of Shiva and Dura greet you as you arrive. Inside the temple grounds, there’s a quiet lake, the Ganga Talao, which mariticians believe is connected to the Ganga River in India. It was serene, spiritual, and a reminder of just how layered this island really is. Our final stop, Belmar on the east coast. We checked into Sea Maicius, an all-inclusive stay. Now, I’ll be honest, I had my doubts. All-inclusive wasn’t really my thing, or so I thought. Turns out it was really enjoyable. I might have called Searish mid-range in the intro, but the vibe felt really elevated, sleek, stylish, and relaxed. The views of Belmar Beach reminded me of Zanziba’s east coast. Tide patterns, steady breeze, wind surface catching waves, and water crystal clear. The all-inclusive part actually kind of cool. Endless drinks, plenty of food options, and lots of cozy corners to just chill. The beach was perfect for lounging and even better for snorkeling. Now, the next part wasn’t really my idea. Neils is a big golf guy and apparently the Iloer Golf Club was designed by some famous German golfer. So, naturally, we had to go. Luckily, being the plus one has its perks. We were picked up for a transfer and then took a boat out to Ilo, a small private island of the east coast of Maitius, known for its luxury golf course and quiet beaches. [Music] Once we arrived, we headed straight to the clubhouse, or as I now know, the pro shop, which looked more like a high-end spa than anything golf related. And honestly, the grounds were stunning. Even I have to admit, I get it. Neils was off living his golf dream, and I actually was living mine. Then I caught a golf cart shuttle to the private beach. And wow, this was super nice. The beach even had its own bar. You could order food and snacks. It was so amazing. service directly delivered to the loungers and I had a great time swimming, drinking, snorkeling, anything you name it. I came for the emotional support role, but as I sucked my drink on a private beach, I couldn’t help but wonder, had I just become an all-inclusive gold necklace buying private golf course loving snob? Honestly, I didn’t hate it. And just like that, our 10 days in Maitius came to an end. Three regions, three stays, each with its own vibe, its own surprises, from dolphins to designer golf shops. Maicius had a range, and honestly, I really loved every minute of it. I will definitely be back. Thank you for watching, and if you’re planning your own trip, I really hope this gave you a few ideas. I’ll catch you again in the next one. [Music]
