Rory McIlroy’s driver was deemed non-conforming ahead of the PGA Championship. Here’s what it means.
It’s not a conspiracy or a cover up to some crime. It’s a normal thing that happens to players every single week and it just happened to Rory Maroy. Okay, so think about the tires on your car. The more you use them, the more they wear down until eventually they become unusable. The same thing happens with driver faces. The more golf balls you hit, the thinner the face gets. And the thinner the face gets, the further the golf ball goes until eventually it’s deemed nonconforming. That’s why every tournament randomly selects driver heads to test them for conformance. And this week, Rory’s driver was deemed non-conforming, which is why he had to switch it out for an identical model. And this makes sense because players with higher ball speeds, like Rory Mroy, tend to go through drivers a little quicker. So again, this is a normal routine thing and it’s good for everyone because it ensures fair play across the entire

So you are saying an old beat up used drive will go further? I was always told old drivers get dead faces. Someone is not telling the truth.
And the manufacturers are designing these drivers right on the edge of the legal limits. Doesn’t take a whole lot of change for it to become non-conforming.
Commercial driver heads and pro driver heads are different. The faces of the drivers get shaved down on pro heads to exact tolerance. Making these heads have more trampoline effect but decreasing the durability of the face. That’s why you see this and other issues like cracked faces with pro driver heads.
I’ve been playing golf for 28 years (36 now) and I’ve never experienced a driver going farther with a worn out face. My (swing) speed is 121 with an average ball speed around 179 to 182.
This dude Maxes out every club so I doubt it his gamer would go any further. It’s more of a comfort and weighting type of thing.
I have drivers the same exact loft & spec when I put the shaft in them, but one driver will feel different to the other.
Sorry, but at that level, they know. When a single stroke could mean 2.5 million dollars,,, they know.
Why not test them after the round? 😮
Happened to me just last week. Noticed i was all of a sudden bombing it 230 'stead of my regular 210 so guess im off to buy another driver.
Wow never knew you could “go through” a driver
It would ensure fair play across the entire field if they tested across the entire field every week! Or if every driver has to be tested at fixed intervals, say every 4 weeks or something. Otherwise, it's just picking on the poor players who get tested. This obviously threw Rory off totally. Yes, testing is needed, but this needs to be done better!
Its "normal" because Rory's the golden boy of the PGA.
Let's put the situation in a different light – what if he wasn't selected that week and he kept playing with a non conforming driver – is that fair?
As a professional world class athlete playing for millions of dollars – shouldn't YOU be responsible in ensuring that your equipment is conforming?
And I thought Patrick Reed was bad…..
So, I shouldn’t be buying the latest and greatest driver…?
So you’re part of the cover up.
So you’re part of the cover up. Why has no other top pro had this violation that I’ve heard of? It would have made headlines. Would he have won the masters with an ilegal driver? That’s the question.
Absolute crap. If the driver at purchase is conforming. Then it stays conforming for its life. Technically it affects every player in every club. That makes my driver non conforming. i can hit 270 yards regularly. there is no way my driver hasn’t thinned over the 10 years I have owned it. It’s unrealistic. Stupid rule. You’re talking about 10 metres max. Morons run this game. Because they are out of touch. They think we are all Rory, Bryson or Scotty. We want to see them driving it into next week.
It was probably going to go a whole foot longer, how stupid!!!
Estimated carry benefit for Rory is 19 – 20 yards. Massive deal. Trampoline effect increases ball speed and also reduces spin rate. If he has a back up he definitely knows how much hotter his "gamer" was vs. the backup.
This didn't happen with persimmon woods
I call complete bollox ..a golf ball thins metal ..the vaccine is safe and effective too 🐑🐑🐑
The big question is, did he use this illegal driver to win the masters??? Every golfers equipment should be inspected before every event, especially the majors.
With that high speed, I could see crack comes first before it gets too thin
Yeah because it's perfectly reasonable to expect people to believe that hitting a piece of rubber with one of the toughest metals known to man would cause the titanium to wear away. And it's got nothing to do with the fact that he's had the face shaved until it's on the limits of legality 😂😂😂😂😂😂
That totally explains why Rory only found five fairways so far lol
“Goes further”………Runs to garage to get sandpaper
I thought the carbon faces were supposed to be more durable and avoid this
Jack used the same driver his whole in all his Major wins, go back to persimmon woods, make the game difficult again
It’s been my experience that a driver is hot out of the package and wears down over time. It loses its pop. Not the other way. Why would we buy new drivers as amateurs if they went further? This is false.
The timing is just so bad, it happened to his stealth as well
I think it’s possible that the carbon fiber face can “break in” and get hotter as you use it in the same way composite baseball bats do
The face doesn't get thinner it gets flatter. This is why you hear them talk about breaking in a head, they are literally softening up the face so it has more rebound.
