Stirling University opens new indoor golf studio

The University of Stirling is opening a new indoor golf studio so golfers can use “data-driven insights” to improve their technique.

The Performance Golf Studio will be built beside the existing Golf Pavilion on the campus.

The studio is powered by Trackman which uses radar technology for its immersive performance trackers. Golf players can experience the world’s best golf courses from the campus, while getting feedback on their skills.

Stirling’s Vice-Chancellor Sir Gerry McCormac launched the grant from the Macleod Foundation to fund the project.

Dean Robertson said: “The University of Stirling is one of the top destinations for golf scholars in the UK – with many of our alumni going on to compete in the professional game – such as Catriona Matthew OBE, Richie Ramsay and Graeme Robertson.

“Our Performance Golf Studio further elevates the excellent facilities we have here at Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence and complements our existing coaching methods, delivered here at Stirling and out on course.”

The studio will use radar and cameras to create an immersive setting for golf scholars. The rooms will also use 3D audio and high-quality graphics.

As they practice, players’ will receive feedback on their club speed, spin rate, carry distance and launch angle. These analytics will help golfers improve.

The Executive Director of Sport at Stirling, Cathy Gallagher, said: “We are delighted to launch our new Performance Golf Studio – a unique and important addition to our high-performance golf environment, as we seek to recruit, develop and nurture the next generation of golfing talent.”

Stirling’s International Sports Scholarship Programme supports the university’s athletes with funding, equipment and their academics. Athletes from Stirling have competed in the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.
