Frustrated Ryder Cup legend Sergio Garcia reckons he has played like a 25-handicapper at Quail Hollow as he grafts through some tough weeks.

The Spanish star felt down in the dumps after the first two days at the PGA Championship having believed that his performance was “99 per cent” likely to lead to a missed cut.

In the end, Garcia made it through on the mark and will play alongside former Open champion Brian Harman in Saturday’s third round.

But the LIV star says he needs to brush up as he explained straight after his second round: “I can play better than yesterday, but hey, it was easy to play better than yesterday.

“Yesterday I played with a handicap of 25. Today I played with a handicap of seven. But you put yourself in the situations and that’s how it is.”

Speaking to Spanish outlet Elperiodcom, the icon of past European sides against the United States continued: “The truth is, I hit several shots that I really liked. There were still too many shots that weren’t good enough.

“But we’ll see if it was a coincidence or if it’s something that’s really helping me, something I’m working on.

“There are times when there are drives that look like they might be good, but the feeling isn’t as good. It’s not as fluid as I’d like, even if I hit it on the fairway.”

Asked how to put it right, he added: “I don’t know. The truth is, honestly, we’ve had a few pretty tough weeks, pretty poor play.

“When you come to a course like this, a big one, everything intensifies a little more, all the shortcomings are a little more visible and that’s what’s happened.”
