In this episode of Your Golf NCG we switch our focus to Mini Driver season. We’ve got our hands on the brand-new Titleist GT280 Mini Driver to see if it can rival the offerings from TaylorMade, Callaway and PXG!
Spoiler Alert! If you’ve been struggling with tight fairways or running into bunkers with your driver, this might be the perfect solution. In this review, we put the GT280 through its paces both off the tee and off the deck, testing its adjustable loft, thermoform crown, and flat sole design.
Most importantly we see how it compares to a traditional driver and how it can fit into your golf bag. Jack Backhouse, a PGA Professional, tested it from a number of different lies to get a gauge of ball speeds, carry distances, and spin rates.

It is well and truly Mini driver season. You’ll have seen recently that we reviewed the new Tailor Made R seven quad mini driver and today I have the Tireless GT 280 to review. Now I’ve been using Mini Drivers quite a lot because the fairways are bone hard in England at the moment and I’m finding that I’m running into bunkers, getting into trouble with my driver. So I’m right up for a mini driver. I am in love with the GT series. I’ve been using the driver. I’ve been using the fairway. And actually, I’ve hit a few shots with the hybrid, which I did quite like. So, when Titly sent me this, um, I’m thinking this might be the answer to my T-shot concerns at the moment. So, let’s get into it. Have a look at the tech and see how it performs. Perfect. Solve review over. So, I think that Titus may have just the the complete range or the most complete range in the GT series. The driver’s good, the fairways and the hybrids are great, and this is designed to fit in somewhere between the driver and the 3-wood. So the tour players have been feeding back to the guys at Titless that actually they’re looking for like a two-wood or an old school two-wood. Something that just goes a little bit further than the 3-wood for off the tea and actually something that’s also usable for from the fairways. So I think there’s some interesting design characteristics here that are just going to allow you to use this a bit more than you might some of the other mini drivers. So we do have some familiar technology here um stuff that we see in the driver. So, we have the thermopform crown which is Titus owned PMP material which just makes it it’s super lightweight which means they can redistribute the mass elsewhere. We’ve got two weights on the bottom um for if you want it sort of low spinning driven ball flight or you’re going to use it more off the ground. You want to hit it a bit higher, you might move the weight back just to move the CG around to optimize your flight. We’ve got tie lists adjustment cozle which just obviously allows you to adjust the loft and the lie independent of one another. So really really like that. But the big question for me is is that I like these off the tea but what can the brands do for me to help me hit this off the ground cuz if I put this in the bag I’m probably might even drop the driver. Um definitely drop the 3-wood. So I’m using this as an allrounder. Um, but the it’s got a 280cc head which is obviously really big and behind the ball. Although I love the way the tightness looks, it does sit quite tall. So like I stand there and I’m just not quite certain how to hit it. Should I be swinging like a 3-wood or a driver or what? So we’ll get into that. Let me hit a few more shots and get some more data. It’s worth mentioning that that first shot I’ve hit is 155 ball speed, 250 carry at 3,200 RPM spin. This is a shaft that’s been fit for me. Um, and I, you know, I get all my tightless clubs, so you know, you can watch the other reviews I’ve done. Um, that was like basically exactly what I wanted to do. 250 through the air. It’s probably going to run to 270, 280 depending on on the bouts. Uh, which is dead. Wow. Now, one of the things I’ve always never quite quite figured out is do I hit this like a driver or a 3-wood? So, when I first got the mini driver, I was pegging it up quite high and pretty much just hitting it like I would my driver. What I found was I would get a lot of like high toe strikes which would just cause me to hook it off where since I teed it a little bit lower and sort of try and drive it a bit more like a three-wood almost with a slightly descending blow. I’ve had absolutely fantastic results with these clubs. That was another 155 ball speed, 250 carry, 3,500 spin. The benefits for me with this club is I just spin the ball a little bit more than I do with a driver, which means my bad shots aren’t going to go as far offline and it’s a lot more playable. Modern drivers are so low spin nowadays that sometimes these mis hits even with all the technology they’ve been working on the past two years is the spin drops too low and you end up with this shot that sort of doesn’t quite fly right where this mini driver is spinning enough and stable enough for it to stay in the air but still go a long way I am a few bit slice Um interestingly still decent uh ball speed there 153 but way more spin open face slight heel shot is just like the spinnest shot you could hit 224 carry so I’ve lost quite quite a bit of distance there now off the tea we know this is good um providing you put a good swing on so but let’s hit some off the deck now and we’ll just talk about what Titus have done with the sole of this club so if you were going to drop your 3-wood and put this club in the bag, you have to be able to hit it from the ground. Now, what Titus have done for that is we have a much flatter sole design with this club um with the idea that on a tight lie on a fairway, when you put the club down behind the ball, it doesn’t absolutely frighten you. If you were going to hit driver off the deck, um, which is obviously quite a high tariff shot, what you find when you put the club behind the ball is like the the amount of club on the ground is pretty small and you just feel like you’re going to top it off in it. Certainly, that’s how I feel where because the the sole of this club is so flat, it’s grounds itself to the club really well and almost like just sits down slightly behind the ball, which is going to then help you get underneath it and hit the ball in up in the air more. Now, I’m not saying that it’s like I stand there and I can’t wait to hit it because I still am thinking, well, there’s a big club head there with a small ball, but it’s better than it’s better than some of the other mini drives. Certainly better down out of drive. Um, so definitely going to hit this a bit more like 3wood. Probably it’s going to launch a bit lower, maybe spin a bit more. Not go quite as far. Whoa, such a rocket. Take it all back. So, definitely might lose that one. 153 ball speed. Literally no drop off in ball speed whatsoever. 248 carry, 3,300 spin. Take it all back. Tyler has made the perfect club. That was uh that was absolutely ridiculous. I’m going to have to take a couple more. Maybe I’m getting carried away. I’m actually really surprised that I was not feeling that confident about hitting a good shot. And this is like a real test of my golf shot and that was pretty good. So maybe I’m spin more either one I was expecting. So a bit off the bottom uh with a bit of a fade one still 151 ball speed which is amazing cuz that was literally the lowest possible groove strike. Um 225 carry so not massive distance but not complaining about that at all. Obviously we’ve recently put out the Tailor Made review. Just thinking about how the two compare, the Tailor Made definitely produced some pretty hot ball speeds. Um, I found that the ball speed off the Tailor Made was pretty much where, you know, at 160 where I would hit a driver normally, and I’ve definitely not quite reached that with this club, but this is far easier to hit off the ground. Certainly in that video with the tailor made to hit just to get the ball going at all. I was almost like having to try and slice it and then the shots I hit weren’t fantastic. Uh where like that first shot was just unimaginably good. The second one’s not too bad. I hit one more but definitely two very different clubs in my opinion. Tailor Maiden one quite suited for t-shirts, you know, very fast where this thing is probably a little bit more forgiving in my opinion and, you know, probably slightly more versatile. It’s not just an off the tea club. It’s a club that, you know, can be used from the fairway quite easily as well, which it which is nice. And obviously, it’s got that tightless classic look to it. So, that’s a huge nod um to them as [Music] well. Oh, just fantastic. 156 ball. 251 carry. Like you can sort of see my little strike there. Don’t know whe you can see that, but that was as good a strike as I can possibly do. It’s gone with like a two yard fade. I could definitely use this. Um in fact, it may well go in the bag. The question is is what do I drop? Um I don’t hit many threewoods and I sort of then just end up with two T-shot clubs. Um, so maybe I just drop the driver alto together and just play the mini driver and accept that I might have a a little bit longer into into the holes. I really like that it spins a touch more uh cuz it just makes me feel a bit safer that I’m not going to get some of these crazy low spin disasters that I I’ve sort of had over the past few years. So, should the Mini Driver go in everybody’s bag? Well, I don’t know. Probably not. So, I know that there’s a a good amount of golfers who just don’t like driver. Can’t look at it. They can’t swing it. So this this club is in fact like the perfect thing for them because it’s got freewood length shaft. It’s got a big enough head for you to hit it plenty far enough but doesn’t at all look or feel like a driver. Um if you’re someone who doesn’t like hitting fairway woods then I would definitely say it’s not for you because you’re not confident at hitting a 3wood then hitting a mini driver off the ground is way harder. So you probably wouldn’t hit the bag either. But if you’re someone who is sort of right on that edge of constantly finding fairway buckles from the tea and don’t mind laying back to get a long club in, then it’s an absolute no-brainer for me because goes further than a 3-wood. It’s easier to hit than a 3-wood, but it just doesn’t quite go as far as your driver. So, you sort of have to think about the course you play at or the course you play most of your golf on. and just have a think about, well, when if you’re right in that 230 to 260 range where the all the bunkers are, then this just might be the perfect club for you. And I really like the Titus GT280 because it’s so easy to get off the ground. Um, so definitely worth getting out and trying. Um, so if you’ve enjoyed that video, please hit that like button. Uh, leave in the comments, let me know if you’re going to go try one because I do think it’s worth testing one if you can. And if you don’t subscribe already, then please do. Best looking MD by far this year not even close 🔥
ooohhh – looks lovely
I like to "upgrade" my taylor made 300 mini driver but I don't think there is 550 euro value in this, and being in rural Ireland with no where close to try it or have a fitting I;m shit out of luck.
How does it compare to the other mini driver like the Callaway?
This club looks amazing
