Ball is one of three Big Ten players on the list, including Oregon’s Lindsey Graham and UCLA’s Jordan Woolery. For Huskers picked up Big Ten Athlete of the week honors in track and field. He grabs it, steps on the bag for one. The long throw across the diamond. Double play. Inning over and Nebraska’s lead holds at 3 to 2. That would be Kale Frost representing the winning run. This ball is turned on into right field. This one’s got a shot. Sanderson walks it off. Nebraska wins it on a three run bomb by Cade Sanderson, and the Huskers win the series now. Volpi’s three two score swings and hammers this one. Right field and deep. Brunson going back. And it’s off the base of the wall DiNardo scores and scores. Squire trying for third. She slides in there safely a two run triple to right field for Squire and Nebraska with A31 lead in the bottom of the first. Now here are your hosts, Jessica Cootie and Nick Hanley on the Huskers radio network. Welcome in, everybody, to our final sports nightly of the week. This time of the year is always gets a little crazy, a little bonkers around here. We got postseason softball baseball moving up their series. So our final two hours for you here on Sports nightly before baseball will be on the air. Ben actually going to do it solo this week up in Purdue. Big series to close out for Nebraska baseball. We’ll have Nate Rohr on the network all weekend long with regional action for Husker softball. As they will head down to Baton Rouge. We will hear from Nate Roar coming up in our number two. We’re going to break down all the regional, the teams there, the matchups, potential matchups for Husker softball. Talk about all of that. And then we’re going to hear from Rebecca Allick. How about some some volleyball coming up here in just a few minutes. We’re going to have some picks for the PGA Championship. Nick and I are some golf nerds. We like to talk some golf. So we’ll do that an hour number two as well. So we got a lot to get to here over these next couple of hours. But I know you’re always excited to make some golf picks Nick. I am I’m very excited. And it’s always a fun week for me because I have a golf trip that always coincides with the PGA Championship, too. So it’s not only golfing with a bunch of buddies, but we’re also watching the PGA Championship while enjoying our downtime too. So yeah, I was I there’s a storyline that I know you don’t want to acknowledge either, but we could see another Grand Slam, right. Your favorite golfer? No, let’s we’ll save it. We’ll save it for our two. So. All right, all right. Fair enough. Russ had this in the ticker Jordy Ball named which we assume that that was going to happen a top ten finalist for player of the year. And she’s the only two way player on that list. And you could argue she’s one of the best pitchers. There’s a couple pitchers, couple outfielders a couple infielders. You could argue she’s in the category of she. Even if you took one of those away, she’d still be on that list. I I’m not sure exactly how it works this year. I’m told that it’s changed up a little bit and that I think the votes had to already be in before the postseason even begins, which I wish maybe she had one weekend for some of those folks, because the with the Big ten and how they play on plus sometimes not as much exposure. I know Jordy Ball is Jordy Ball and people know what she’s doing, but I wish she would have maybe had one weekend of postseason to really show because the last time people remember her she was just a pitcher. So to give give the college softball audience the national college softball audience a chance, a glimpse at what she’s done this year now that she’s back for Nebraska and what she’s done with on all phases of the game. Yeah, it’s a big part of it. We talk about this a lot in college football, right? Of certain Heisman Trophy candidates throughout the season, that exposure, part of it has brought up a lot when we’re talking about Ashton Gentry and a lot of people talking about gentry, sorry, a lot of people talking about, well, how many times have you had a chance to see a Boise State game? And it was it was a good thing, even though the Heisman Trophy had already happened and he, you know, finishes runner up, you get a situation where all of a sudden people are showcasing. He’s showcasing his skills at the at the main level on the College Football Playoff. And you’re seeing that on a national scale. And I think that ultimately helped him in the draft as well. I think you can look at the yards, but until you actually see that person with your own eyes and you see what the hype is all about or what the numbers are telling you, game in and game out, you’re watching it with your own eyes. It definitely does have its impact. And so I’m with you. I think if you know, we talk a lot about teams out of the Pac 12, from the from the old days when there would be. Well, you’re how many people are watching this particular player at 9:00 on a Saturday night. So that exposure is big and I think it’s big in all sports. I think softball is no exception to that. And I think you bring up a fair point about BTN plus and just the amount of games that are on Big Ten network. And I think it was a cool thing that they did these Saturday, Sunday, Monday so they could put and showcase a Big Ten team and a Big Ten game during conference play on those Mondays. But is that drawing in the type of audience that you want on Monday? Late afternoon game is not the same as, say, a Friday night or a Saturday or Sunday afternoon as well. So there’s definitely that working against her. But I think that that’s working against all softball players, too, and to some extent lesser in the ACC, ACC, SEC and ACC, I think for baseball as well. Okay. So before we I told you we got a lot to get to. So you got to move along. But I did want to switch gears really quickly here in this first segment. Again we’re going to talk more softball in our number two. But wanted to at least hit that off the top because that was the some one of the big news I guess bullets of the day. But you had coach Roll on last night and you just get a sense that he really likes this group. And he talked about the depth and the competition. And I’m springing this on you, by the way. But I was just walking along the stadium and I thought of this yesterday when I asked Sorrells, okay. We talked about our our position groups we’re going to watch for. We’re intrigued by going into spring, but now that spring is done, which group are you most excited about? And he had talked about the wide receivers and maybe just more. So which guy is going to emerge and be the number one guy for Dylan. But so I wanted to maybe ask you the same question here tonight. Now that we have seen a little bit more of this team and we’re reflecting on where they’re where they are going into the summer months, which group are you most excited about now at the conclusion of spring football? This is going to sound kind of crazy to a lot of our listeners, but I’m because the proof is in the pudding. Right? But offensive line. I’m still extremely excited about the offensive line because in my opinion, they have a couple of elements that they haven’t had before. First of all, you’ve got young developmental guys that I think are ready to make that that step forward. I’m excited to see what Justin Evans can do at center. I’m excited to see, even from a depth standpoint, what a healthy Teddy Prohaska could eventually be. We heard good things about, you know, and so there’s some of those younger guys in there, but also the emergence of Grant Brix like that. That’s one of those guys that I think when he first came over to Nebraska as a four star recruit out of the state of Iowa, you thought, boy, you beat out Iowa for that guy. This has to turn into something. And we’ve seen by all indications that that growth is taking place. But the thing that I’m most excited about is the two transfers and Spindler and Pritchett, because you have two guys not only that are coming from big time programs, but two guys that were starters at big time programs. One guy who, as we know, played in the national championship. So I think there is a depth piece with Nebraska where you’ve got some of your lower end guys that I think are coming fast are are really starting to develop. But I think you also have some stability, guys with a lot of experience that that own that respect in the room. I think that was always a missing ingredient in the past couple of years, where you had some veterans that had played for Nebraska for a long time, but their overall body of work was a little bit hit and miss. It was a little inconsistent to where you have two very proven offensive linemen coming from big time programs that are looking to solidify this group, that needs to be solidified on top of younger guys under Donovan Raiola that are developing. Good pick. I like it. And you know I think that was a it’s been a big storyline and it’s just it’s a process right? I think Charles and I talked a lot about that. If you missed it, the latest sideline slice is out on our podcast platforms. That was one of the things we talked a lot about is just it you you have a lot of times you might feel really good about the five, and then maybe you got some really young guys that aren’t ready to play at that they’re really excited about. But it’s that middle group and they’re they’re closing the gap. On maybe having the numbers on all three of those where you’re, you’re building from the from the young guys in that talent. But then you’ve got some guys that are getting there that are almost ready to play, but are also guys that could step in if their number was called like a gunner. Cotulla was last year. And then you have those five that that you really are locked in on as far as your your starting five, I think that group is going to be really good. They were not even at full strength over the spring because you got some guys coming off of injury that you’re going to add to the mix going into the fall as well. So that’s going to be a fascinating storyline. Going into the fall is just which five guys they settle on and what positions I, I am going to do something. I’m going to go different from you though and say the linebackers and you know, just with the guys leaving that were starting last year, you lose two starters. But then you saw Vincent Schaefer’s really emerge and was just all over the place. In the bowl game, you have Javon right back that is finally healthy and able to actually practice. He’s not practicing. Last fall. Marc Marquez Watson, Trent I just I think they feel really good about that depth of guys really at the inside. Some of those guys that can maybe erase some plays, be some erasers. I think the speed is really there. And I just think they’ve got some really, really good playmakers that we didn’t know. And I think that was my position going into it. What what what group am I intrigued to see how they progress throughout spring football and I think throughout it now I’m really excited about that group and just the options and the depth that they have at that spot. In particular, I thought about D-line, but I think I need to see them play. I think with the D line going into last year, we knew that was going to be a strength. We’ve seen what Nash can do, we’ve seen what Ty can do, and we have some guys that are ready to emerge, but we just haven’t seen them as consistently in a game like situation. So I think the D line is going to be pretty good as well. But I think for me, just again, with the question that I asked you most excited about, I think I lean towards that, that linebacker spot. And I think that’s fair. I would say there are two. Well, one, I think the obvious answer that you and I both could have gone with is defensive back. I think it kind of falls in that line of excitement, but also intriguing because you want to see how it’s all sorted out and what that rotation looks like. And unfortunately, we won’t see that until that Thursday night kickoff against Cincinnati. But the other part I will throw this into the intrigue category. That was the pre spring conversation that we had when we were talking about this. I now put my focal point on, on the tight ends because I want to see obviously Luke Lindenmeyer is a little more established and I think we understand what he’s going to be like. And Dana Holgorsen’s offense, we saw that at the end of the year. But I also think there is something to be excited about or at least intrigued about. You got to measure measure expectations on this one. But Heinrich Haarberg, when you have a flat out athlete that’s a big body and has the type of speed and is adaptable, I think there are things you can get out of him at that position. Not saying he’s the every down type of guy, but I think that is also an interesting piece. Obviously, Carter Nelson is a freakish athlete and we’re looking for him to take a step forward as well where he’s kind of that tight end, wide receiver hybrid. But even Mack Markway, you know what? What type of role will he have when he ends up healthy and able to contribute as well? So I think that’s now I put my intrigue on that position group going into fall. Good stuff. All right. We are going to go ahead and get to a break. So plenty of time. I got a conversation with Rebecca coming up. We’re going to talk some Husker volleyball the now senior. How about that. I told her I was like that doesn’t sound right Rebecca Alex senior middle blocker. Does it seem like it’s time? I don’t know, Nick. I just I feel like. We’ve seen see I almost feel opposite. I feel like because she was such a big impact player so early in her career that I feel like when we got to the end of last year, I’m like, oh yeah, Alex gone, oh wait, no she’s not. So I feel like just because and that’s, that’s an absolute testament to how good she’s been from day one. But I feel like when you see those freshmen have such a high impact. Yeah. You feel like, gosh, they feel like they’ve been here for eight years. Yeah. I think that’s when you have a player on opposing teams too that are like, gosh, they’re back again. Can you? Yeah, I feel like Lexi Rodriguez was probably that for a lot of people too last year. Like she’s got another year left. Come on. But you’re right. I mean but still I guess just when you say it, it just like man. And that’s it. So we talk about that. So she’s going into her senior season. So we’re going to dive into that. Just an unbelievable interview. She’s just so smart and just got so well. So just her approach to the world is just so impressive for being so young. So got that conversation coming up on the other side of this. So stick around here on Sports Nightly. Woodhouse has been a trusted partner in your everyday since 1975. Now going into her senior season, the middle blocker that, as Nick and I were just talking about, has been a huge part of this program for three years, but dove into a number of different topics. Wanted to bring you a portion of that conversation. So here is my chat with Rebecca Allick. Well, how was the spring when you close the spring? I mean, I know there’s some changes there. How do you feel about where the team was when you guys played walked off the court in Ord, Nebraska? Yeah, I felt really good. I feel like the competition, the gym is really high, but I remember I shared this with, I’m trying to figure out what network I was with, but I just feel like we have a lot of raw potential right now. I think there’s a lot of things we need to clean up on, but for where we’re at in the spring, I think we’re in a really good spot. That’s awesome. Yeah. Well, when you get the news, I guess Coach Cook is telling you guys he’s retiring. How did you react? What were the emotions for you then? I was crying like a baby. I do not handle that kind of change very well. And yeah, I really wanted to win one with him because he’s a legend in the game. He’s been around forever. And so yeah, I just felt like a missed opportunity last year and the year before. And so I don’t know, I just feel like it was so quick to win. He also shared when Danny was coming and it was just a lot to try and figure out in your brain. It was just a lot going on. And so yeah, I was crying a lot, though. I can only imagine. I mean, because, you know, you think it’s coach and all of a sudden, oh, now we got another one. Just the, the whole whatever hour it was that you’re trying to process all of that. So what immediately when Danny comes in, what was your reaction and what did you learn quickly about her and what she wanted to bring to being the head coach of Nebraska volleyball? I guess from the moment I heard her name, I was skeptical because I’m like, I just was told that my coach is leaving. I was like, forget this. I don’t want to, I don’t want to do this. And then I remember leaving and I was like, Danny Busboom. And so it started to sink in. I’m like, okay. And coach had a lot of great things to say about her. He acknowledged that if you were to compare his last years and her last years, she had a better winning percentage and Final Four appearances. And so he was really gassing her up there in the locker room. And so that gave me a lot of confidence because, you know, he’s a very intentional man when it comes to who he praises. And so I thought that spoke a lot of volume. And yeah, I just feel like through the spring she’s done nothing but be herself. And that’s just reaffirmed everything that, you know, she said that she would be and she pulled us aside within like the first week of being on campus and just laid it out like, this is who I am. This is my story. And if you want to get to know me, I would love that. But I obviously understand everything on your own time. But yeah, she’s really big on transparency, so it made it really easy to buy in. And I think for me personally, anytime it comes to change, I would like to know, like what’s your vision, what’s your goals, what makes you motivated. And she hasn’t shied away from answering any of that, even the hard stuff that I used to be scared to ask. She’s just been super transparent about it. Like, you know, this is not the right time. And so, yeah, I just love everything about her her personality, her sense of humor, her motivation, and her intentionality is just exactly what we need. That’s amazing. So you said it’s so player led with her. How is that different? What what are I guess how does that look when you say that you guys are more player led? Yeah, I think coaches just used to taking the reins and having to put the foot down. And I think you see a lot of girls. Me personally, I was never really fazed by it. I’ve always been coached by a guy like that. So, you know, if you’re horsing around, he’s going to let you know and he’s going to let you feel it. And so for me, I just always had my head on right during practice. And I don’t know if things just weren’t clicking. He wasn’t he wasn’t shy to let you know. It’d be like, I know what the standard is. You know what the standard is? Why aren’t we competing at that level so very black and white? And I think with Danny, she’s a lot more like, I want to see you guys fail. You need to fail to figure this out. And I need to know what you guys look like when you fail. And I think that’s really huge. Again, with change, but also being at a high level, I think, you know, 70 to 80% of this team can go pro and play in the top teams. We need to figure out how to pull our own teammates out without, you know, a voice barking and barking out. And she’s just she knows that, for example, Danny’s the kind of person to be like, if we run a crazy play, she would just straight up ask, what was that? And we’re like, is that a genuine question? She goes, yeah, what was that? And it’s just very conversational. And I think that’s great. You know, she doesn’t utilize those opportunities to kind of make you question was that the right idea? She goes, no, I want to hear where you’re coming from so we can figure out if that’s something we want to move forward with or if we need to just trash. So that’s just one example. And yeah, I just see a lot of people kind of come out of their shell, I think. I think what’s great is like we have so many different leaders on the team. And so every opponent moment, you know, the game of volleyball has a lot of ebbs and flows. So I may not always need to talk in the huddle, or Harper may not always need to talk in the huddle. You have a lot of different leaders on the team, and it’s like different people can step up, Olivia can step up. It’s just like, I don’t know. It’s very easygoing in my opinion. That’s amazing. It feels like to maybe have more ownership in in the day to day as a player. Right? I mean, when it when you have that opportunity and she kind of gives you that, that platform I guess. Yeah. Yeah. No it’s just been yeah I love everything about it. It’s just been easy going. That’s awesome. You know, you brought this up and there’s I think we’ve seen this throughout the last few years is just how competitive the gym is. Was that something that you knew what you were getting into? You had to you’ve always embraced that because you know, in nature you don’t always want to compete every single day for your job. But I guess how have you grown into embracing that aspect of Nebraska volleyball? Yeah, I think you kind of hit the nail on the head with that. I don’t think a lot of people want to go into their jobs having to compete. So it’s like day in and day out. I have to be able to give 100% of what I have, and it’s regardless of what’s going on in my personal life. And I don’t think a lot of athletes realize how hard it is because some of these athletes just float through college. And like, I don’t understand what the struggle was. Well, it’s like then you didn’t fully give what you had, in my opinion, it’s not easy. I will, I will admit, because there are some weeks, not even days. There are weeks where you’re not clicking. For example, I’m not clicking with my setters or my serves not going. And like things just aren’t going well and you still have to figure out, okay, how do I show up next week and not just go through the motions and not pout? But how do I actually get better after that crapshoot of a week? So those those are the hard ones, but it is so rewarding when you pull yourself out of that space. I mean, I pretty much had a whole season of that last year, so I understand what it feels like to struggle day in and day out. But I never stopped trying because I knew at one point it was going to click. And that’s honestly what my entire senior spring has been. 2025 is looking really freaking good for me. I’m really excited. I, I don’t know, I just feel like you’re not really entitled to anything. And I think when I’m excited about is I always put myself in the best position to succeed, and I usually give everything I have. So it’s like I can walk away if I even if I get my face pounded and it’s like, well, I gave everything I had. So there’s not really much that could have gone different, you know? So I think the competition piece is just kind of who I am. I think it’s the way I was brought up. It was the expectation that John Cook gave me when I signed to be a Husker. He goes, if you want to be great, you got to come in and pretty much put your life out out there on the court. It’s not going to be easy. I’m not going to say it’s going to be easy. And he didn’t promise me any playing time ever. He told me I could be great and I believed him. And yeah. What amazing perspective. You know, you talked about this spring for you what were knowing you’re going into your senior spring. You’ve been such a staple of Nebraska volleyball for three years. What were some areas that you’re like, okay, I want to do this better. I want to get better here. I want to be able to impact more here or there. Yeah, I want to kill balls and serve aces. That’s truth be told. I think that’s like how I’m going to put myself on the map. Like that’s how I make myself a threat, because it’s not even about threat. It’s no, it’s if I’m going out there and they’re comfortably able to ignore me, that’s a problem, because now my pin hitters have easily a double block every time. So like, I need to be a threat for the sake of the team. So yeah, I want I need to kill more balls. I got to be up and available and definitely serving. I think it’s a pretty good draw between me and Andy right now, and either one of us behind the line is a really good pick. And of course I’m not going to shy away from wanting that, so I think I just got to continue to kill balls in practice and serve up Pete from the end line. And then from that piece, once you serve it, you got to be able to play defense. So yeah, I just got to tighten up in those loose areas. And yeah, I think those are probably the three big contributors for me this season. That’s awesome. I think our listeners might be interested. How do you work and improve and make yourself where you are a threat from the service line? I mean, yeah, just practice or what goes into that. Yeah, I think it’s just intentional reps. That’s really all I can say because it’s just you and the ball back there. It is easy. It’s the one skill that you have complete control over. It’s just you and the ball. So if I’m going to waste 30 minutes of practice when we’re serving, then that’s on me and it’s going to show up in the game. So yeah, it really is just intentional reps. Is that something you can do on your own? Like, you know, when you shoot in the basketball gym, you can shoot without anybody being in there? Is that a skill that you can work on with with nobody else in the gym? Yeah. Yeah. Well, and when we had John Baylor on going into the spring match, he had mentioned that how much it looks like they’re going to utilize you a little bit more in the offense. Are you how I guess what’s gone into that for you. And just again continuing to build that that chemistry and relationship with Bergen. Yeah it’s been huge. I mean both Bergen and Campbell, they can dish out dimes. I think they always put the ball in the right spot and if not, I got to register. Well, first, am I the problem? And there’s probably a good percentage that I am. And then from there then I try and nitpick, you know, hey, can I get it higher, faster, that type of stuff. But it’s just been up and available and I’ve been working a lot with Brenton Hager on my arm swing, and that has opened up so much opportunity for me. So I’ve always been able to hit and slice those low balls, but I need to be able to crush like a good set. And so that’s been a game changer for me in the offense. Yeah, I think a lot of it has just been my personal work with Brennan. Me and him have made a lot of breakthroughs this spring. I know you’ve always been driven, but you just seem like you’re on a different level. I can see it in your eyes just how hungry you are. I mean, do you? Is that right? Do you feel that right now? Yeah. There really is. Like, there’s no other option for us to win. But to win this year, I, I don’t know, in the past it’s always like, oh, you know, we’re going to give our best this year. We’re going to give our best. This is my last shot as far as I know. Until NCAA passes any new rules this is all I have. And I haven’t even started the conversation of looking overseas or looking here in the United States for Pro. So this is my life and I have given up so much for this freaking program. And I don’t know, I just I was just with this fourth grade team last night. I was participating in a little volleyball practice, and it had me reflecting on like where I was at their age, you know, I was just I remember they kept hitting the ball over on one, and I remember being their age. I was like, guys, why aren’t we doing three hits? Like, I have just been obsessed with this game since I first found it, and I don’t know, I just feel like what I want from this team, what I want for myself in Nebraska, volleyball is different. I think my sophomore year, freshman year, I was just happy to be there. Sophomore year, I just wanted to be an All American. I was being selfish, truth be told. And junior year I just got so far in my head, I kind of let myself go with my diet and I paid the consequences for it. I just kept having a pity party, and it wasn’t until the last couple of months that I realized it’s like you are. That was your junior year. Like third strike. You got one more going. And so, yeah, I just feel like this year is different. I, I realize what’s important. I started to value the human beings next to me, not just athletes, but these are girls. These are women, and they’re doing their best too. So it’s just different this year. Wow. I have always appreciated with you. You seem to just have always you’re authentically you, right? And you are just so comfortable and you and who you are and what you bring to a team. And a lot of women don’t ever feel that way. What’s your advice and being okay with where your feet are and what you’re doing, and being okay with those big dreams and those big goals that you have just I guess, in in your own skin, being comfortable in that, whether it’s good, bad, ugly and then just embracing whatever comes that way. Yeah, I think I’ll answer your two questions. So the first one about confidence, the biggest thing for confidence with me was being consistent in all the different people I interact with. So I was 1,000% of people pleaser. I, you know, there was the party scene, there was the good Catholic Christian scene, and there was my family. Like I was just all these different characters and it just doesn’t align. And so also in the way that I treated people. So maybe they weren’t of super high status. And it’s like, am I still treating the head coach and the janitor with the same respect? Because it’s not about their roles. It’s like those are human beings with souls and purpose, and they deserve my time and eye contact and all of those different things. So I noticed when I was more consistent in all different parts of my life, from personal to social, I found myself, you know, I don’t know, like I just been able to go to those different events and it’s still me. So I just I just started having more power in my no. I think as a woman, you know, even like in motherhood, we constantly just give ourselves up. We give up our body, we give up our time. Like, I think just as a woman, like, until you’re really at that stage and even through that stage, like, you still need to be okay with saying no. And it doesn’t even have to take like a legal case or an assault to be like, this is my notes. Like, your no is like, no, I’m tired. I appreciate the invite, but I’m staying home tonight. And I noticed when I started saying no to things, I started to feel like, okay, yeah, I do deserve that. I do deserve worth defending. I do deserve worth being listened to. And you’re not going to listen to me. I’m just going to walk away. My mom always said, if you can’t be nice, be quiet. And there’s so many times where I just, I have to be quiet because I’m like, Josiah taught me this quote a month ago. It goes, arguing with the fool proves there are two. There’s no point. And then this other one I learned was you can lose an argument with an intelligent person. You can never win one with the fool. So it’s just it’s just like knowing your scenes, like, is this person, person even worth breaking down this? Or it’s just going to go over their head, just simply walk away. And so I think just consistency in actions has been huge in my confidence. And saying no. And then to answer your question about goals, I just don’t apologize for them. I had this whole debate with my buddy. Was it oh, who was it? Was it Reid and Sam? They’re two other athletes here. And I was going in about, you know, I thought I could be great in basketball, like, really great in basketball. I didn’t feel like I could have played with Caitlin Clark. I don’t doubt that to this day, to this day, I think if I would have stuck with basketball, I could have been hooping with Cece and I just. And they just couldn’t fathom that. Like, you’re delusional. And I go, and I tried going in on them and bring it down the stats. And then I realized, like, oh, this isn’t going to go anywhere. And it’s just having that kind of confidence. It’s like, I’m not going to apologize of what I think I’m capable of. Obviously, I may not be today or tomorrow in a year, but wait till you see me in four years. And I think just I just stopped apologizing for my goals and what I want out of this life. I, my teammates, they give me a hard time about like my chacos, my barefoot shoes. But I believe in what they do for my body. I believe they do with my mental health. And if people aren’t going to listen, then that’s okay. But I know it works for me and that’s okay. How great is she? I love, love, love every time I get to chat with Rebecca. Alec, I mean, I leave feeling like I can conquer the world. I sometimes forget I’m interviewing her, that I just want to keep listening to her talk. I think if once volleyball is over, she should go into motivational speaking. But hey, that was just a portion of the conversation. We got into a lot more, and I’m going to post that entire conversation coming up tomorrow morning on our YouTube channel and our podcast platforms as well, so you can listen to that full conversation tomorrow with Rebecca Alec as a part of the dig powered by emeritus. Welcome back to Sports Nightly. Nick, what I, I said this before the break, but I just kind of get wrapped up talking to Rebecca. She’s just so has such an incredible perspective. And it’s you got to remind yourself. That’s what Russ said during the interview. She does not sound like a 21 year old. But just you just hear her talking about the change. And I got to imagine with the players that signed up to play for John Cook and just the shock, and then they made it through a spring and it just. And Coach Cook even said this when we talked to him in the spring game. But it sounds like Danny has just done everything right to have full trust and faith and belief with this team from everything they did throughout the spring. And I think with Rebecca, Alec, you mentioned her perspective and she’s she’s unique. I think from that standpoint of how how advanced she is and just her overall approach of everything, and it comes out. That was a fantastic segment there, too. And between you and her. It was it was great. I would say this about her is not everybody in that locker room is going to be that forward thinking and have that type of maturity and perspective, but I think there’s levels of maturity that this program demands you to have. And that was what John Cook and I think what also comes with that is these girls, they go through the wars and the offseason to elevate their play so they can hold up to that standard. But make no mistake about it, it’s a standard that they all embrace. And when they’ve seen players that have come before them that have competed at the highest level and then go on to coach and now Danny Busboom, Kelly’s example in her situation comes back to coach them. I think there’s that instant credibility of saying, you’re one of us, you know, you you did this, you went through this, you went through this program. So I think that transition couldn’t be any better. But I do think to your point about her maturity, too. I think you have a lot of women in that locker room that have that similar maturity that if you go into a situation, if you’re Danny Busboom Kelly and you go to a situation where it’s a younger team and maybe they haven’t played that much college volleyball and they don’t know all of that as much, I think it could be a little shakier transition, but when you have that much maturity going into it, I think you’ve got a lot of girls that get it. They understand how the system needs to operate, how to be successful, but more importantly, they know they’re not taking their orders or they’re being led by someone who is who is in their position before and has competed at the ultimate level. So I think it’s a you couldn’t have asked for a better situation. Absolutely. Yeah. Great point there. Just not everybody knows because it’s different with Nebraska volleyball and what she is saying that not every athlete has to battle every single day. You might have battles when you’re playing your your games and matches, but you have to battle in this and it’s not for everybody. And I think you have a different kind of connection with people when you’ve gone through and battled in the way and just everything that comes along with the expectations and, and just what you have to even just win in practice here at Nebraska, it’s just not like everywhere else. Yeah, absolutely. And I think that’s that’s what is so fun to watch this program continue to, to reach the heights that it has to where we expect them to be there at the end. That’s just that’s the standard. But it starts with the players. It started with what Terry Pettit put in it, then what John Cook has put in for so long and keep that thing rolling and evolving. And now Danny Busboom Kelly, who will bring in some fresh insight but understands again what it means to those external factors that can be overwhelming to a coach that doesn’t understand what that takes. But you have players, special players in this program that have come in year in and year out that want to uphold that standard. So they’re going to put in that work, they’re going to go through that grind. And then of course, we know the Big Ten conference will not allow you to take a day off. So yeah, I’m just so excited to see what happens with this team and Danny Busboom Kelly’s first year, because I just think you’re not looking at what is going to be typically a first year coach transition, where things might get a little bit sideways or a little bit out of whack. There’ll be adversity, but I think it’s adversity that can really be tamped down. In Los Angeles, said, hi Jessica, great interview with Rebecca. She has my vote for captain GBR. I think a lot of us probably would vote for her, but that’s a that’s an interesting thing though too, because you’re two captains are gone. There are going to be new captains this year. So that will be they they normally announce that in the summer. But I think right one time they announced it on the way back from their overseas trip. So I don’t know I don’t know what the captain situation looks like. We got a new head coach, so it might be a little bit different, but that that’s another interesting note too is just who who is going to have that seat this year. Yeah. And I think you bring up a good point about this is where maybe there’s a little difference in how you go about selecting that from the previous coach to the new coach. But make no mistake, I think Nebraska fans, whoever is named that captain, they will have earned that and they will represent that title very, very well. All right, let’s get to a break. Nick that someone texted in. If the girls win regional and Tennessee gets beat with the Huskers get the super regional. It’s an interesting question. So I think it would be probably more than likely. Ohio State, I think is the two seed there at that Tennessee regional. And I think they are the higher seed. So they would probably get it. But Nebraska’s stadium is bigger. I don’t think it’s a set set. I think it would. It’s interesting. I don’t know if it’s set in stone one way or the other. Do you know Nick. I so the question that I would have, because I think as long as there was a bid to host at some point and I think if you were anywhere close in the first, obviously in the second seed projections that I think if you know, you’re going to have that type of season, you’re bidding for a host. I know Nebraska did. If Ohio State didn’t, maybe Nebraska would have a shot. I’m assuming Ohio State probably did put in a bid, given the size of Columbus and knowing that they would have obviously the hotels to be able to support that and the facilities to do so, I assume they put in a bid. So if they put in a bid, then yes, it would go to them. I will, I will try to find out and ask and get the for sure answer, but I don’t I’m pretty sure I don’t know. There’s other variables at play that that would be nice though. It’d be awesome. Yeah, yeah, you don’t get a regional, but you get a super regional instead. Hey you take that. We’re here for all the upsets. This this is wild this year. I mean, there’s I think in the past with softball, there’s been just some head and shoulders teams better than other teams. And I think this is one of the years that there’s more parity than there’s maybe ever been in this sport. And I’m curious on how much of that has to do with the transfer portal and what we’re seeing now with the ability to strengthen your team in the snap of a finger through the transfer portal compared. Because you’re right. I mean, every time we would watch turn on the Women’s College World Series, be a lot of the same teams in the same regions usually were represented, and you would see their records compared to other teams in regionals, and it wouldn’t even be close. So I think there definitely was a very front loaded pack of the championship caliber teams. You’re right. And I do think that it’s just at some point it was probably a slower trickle down effect than other sports, that the transfer portal has finally allowed softball to have that as well. Hey, so got a couple minutes left. You’re going on an interesting trip so you will not be on baseball. You’re leaving Ben hanging this week, although you’ve known this is coming for you guys have it planned every year, but I think it will be interesting to hear what you got coming up this weekend. Yeah. So it’s a it’s a trip I’ve done for the last, last handful of years. Now it’s with a friend of mine and then an extension of some of his friends. And now I’ve become friends with. But basically 24 of us were going to a it’s a little golf and lake resort recreational resort out in Moravia, Iowa, called Lake Rathbun. And the golf course is called the preserve. And we play, we do what we call it’s just our buddies trip. It’s a 36 holes on Friday of Ryder Cup format and then on on Saturday it’s 27 holes of Masters format. So individual stuff. And then on the Thursday when we arrive tomorrow, it’s just your practice rounds and some friendly wagers amongst friends. And then, yeah, we’re all in cottages in this little cul de sac that we all get together afterwards and have fun, you know, have fun, get to watch the PGA Championship, watch some NBA finals and or NBA playoffs and Stanley Cup playoffs and stuff. So yeah, it’s a good time. Do you. Foresee your handicap going down up staying the same after this weekend. Oh. Because the guys are gonna want to know and they’re going to be checking in. Are you going to be submitting your scores after every round? I so I won’t on Friday because it’s a it’s kind of a scramble format, two person scramble format. So it’s team play. So it’s Ryder Cup. So we do a bunch of different stuff alternate shot and everything. So that wouldn’t be something to submit into the handicap index. But for sure I will Saturday. And that course has eaten me up many, many times. So. But I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful. And a lot of it has to do with, you know, how you play is what you did the night before, right? Well, we’ll be we’ll be, I guess, patiently awaiting to see how you how your handicap does. And do some live tweeting if you guys want. I’ll just I’ll keep everybody informed. That way. You sure that’s smart? No. All right, we got a break. Our number two is Coming up. We’re going to talk some more Husker softball with Nate Rau. And we’re going to make some picks for the PGA Championship. Keep it here. Hit us up on the text line. Text 402 413 2400 with your Husker thoughts. They say consistency is the key to success. Now here are your hosts, Jessica Cootie and Nick Hanley on the Huskers radio network. Welcome back. Our number two of sports nightly. Our final hour of the week as baseball will be on the air for you right here. Coming up tomorrow night. The final regular season series at Purdue. Ben McLaughlin will be on the call, and we’ll have Husker football on the air. We’re going to talk to Nate Royer coming up in just a few minutes. As we preview the regional action down in Baton Rouge for Nebraska softball. So we had a question in the first hour asking about the potential of if Nebraska won their regional and Tennessee, who the those two regionals would match up in supers if Tennessee lost, would Nebraska get to host? And so this is the official answer that I got unsure at this point. So it’s not set in stone. If anyone other than Ohio State won the Tennessee Regional, then we would host. But if Ohio State won and we won, then the NCAA would have to determine who should host. So I don’t know how they go about who determines that. We’re kind of right, but I would think that Nebraska, like you said, put in for it. And I would think that that’s a pretty good argument to want to keep it at Nebraska just because of the crowds that they’ve had. And they can absolutely be a good host for the supers. It doesn’t hurt that that final three game series at home also resulted into a sellout in one of those, and then the other two were well attended just shy of a sellout, too. So I feel like they they finished that regular season home stand, giving a lot of ammo to that discussion. If it does come up, which would be great if it did. And how how great would that be? As everybody and I heard it even up this last weekend when we were in the booth getting ready for the Michigan game. A lot of people just outside talking about Nebraska going to do enough to host a regional. What do they have to do in the Big Ten tournament to host a regional? So it’s it was on a lot of people’s minds. So how funny would that be if that they don’t they go to Baton Rouge. Cool place to visit. Then you come back for the most important series of the year and that’s actually at Bowling Stadium. But got to do your part out in Baton Rouge first and foremost, and that’s what we’re hoping for. Okay, so I was trying to find where who’s in. So it’s Ohio. Who else is in Ohio State North Carolina and Miami of Ohio. So apparently we’ve got to be big Tar Heel fans this weekend. And what Miami of Ohio. And I think we get the nod over Ohio State so we could even cheer for the Buckeyes. So if we’re wanting everything to happen perfectly, we’re not only Husker fans this weekend, we’re just rooting really much, very much against Tennessee. We’re yeah. Tennessee this weekend. Let’s get the discussion at least to the table. And if it comes down to Nebraska versus Ohio State, we’ll make our claim on why Nebraska should get it over Ohio State. But let’s yeah, let’s get that discussion to the table. So yeah. Go Buckeyes. Yeah okay. So question was asked by one of our regulars on the chat Shane. And he’s asked before and I forgot to ask you guys but curious. He’s curious about just the, the oh what you guys use when you’re talking about when you travel with the what is it software system? I don’t know what it is where you’re you have the capability of tracking the balls and strikes, how fast the pitcher is throwing. And you can see whether the umpire is actually right or not in his in his calls behind the plate. Yeah. It’s the it’s basically the, the ability to use data. And these coaches all the, all these programs use some form of it. Nebraska. And I know a lot of other college baseball programs use Trackman. I think the one that Shane had brought up was Hawk-Eye. I’ve seen that used. And I feel like it’s a lot more prevalent, especially in the Dominican Republic, with a lot of their developmental leagues, that they use that a lot, too. And I think you see it even at the minor league level for college baseball, the Trackman is probably the most used. That’s what we use. In fact, we actually have one of the managers on the Nebraska baseball staff. He is in charge of setting everything up, making sure that you have that access. And then we have his his basically his credentials to utilize that. Even when we’re on the road, we have a really nice big screen setup at Haymarket Park. And then when we’re on the road, we just pulled up on one of our laptops and yeah, we’re seeing the strike zone and we can choose every category that we want to see. There’s probably two dozen different categories from spin rate, velocity, exit velocity. The main things we want to see strike zone. We want to see miles per hour on the pitch. So we want to see velocity from the pitch. And then we want to see launch angle and exit angle things like that that you can you can use as part of the broadcast. And so there was a time that between Ben, myself and Greg, we would we would be looking at a strike zone and we would think that boy, that doesn’t look like that was a strike, or that looks like that was a strike and it wasn’t called. And we would be a little critical of the umpires, and some people would and I understand they would get on us like, come on, can you guys do better? And the answer to that is, no, I couldn’t do better. The last the last few years, though, we’ve actually had the data to where it will show you if it’s in the strike zone or not. And so when we’re talking about, well, that pitch was just outside the zone. And we’ll try to make mention of it of according to Trackman that was a baller. According to Trackman, that was a strike. And it does allow us to pinpoint the location. But I think more than anything, not to use this to be holier than thou on on umpiring because it is a tough job and I could never do that, but I like seeing it from, first of all, what the pitcher’s throwing. I like to see if they’re missing. Were they missing in the zone? Velocity is always a good thing, but also we make a lot of reference to hard hit balls. We can tell when there’s a baseball that comes off the bat very well, comes off the barrel very well. But when you actually can put a number next to that, like the Tucker Zimmerman injury, for instance, we can tell you how hard that ball was hit. It was 107 off the bat. Wow. And so we could tell you how devastating that injury was and how lucky he was that it wasn’t worse. So we have all that information. But yeah, Trackman is the one that’s pretty prevalent in college baseball. And I’m assuming it’s a camera, right. And it’s set up behind the plate. Yes. Yeah. And then it just connects to a program like an app type thing that you guys. Yeah, it’s essentially a launch monitor. I mean, you see it in golf a lot too. And Trackman has that has it a golf one as well. But yeah, they’re essentially launch monitors that give you so many different data points of everything from the hitter to the ball and all of those little things between the contact of the baseball, when the ball is coming in and when the ball is leaving. Okay. And then just wanted to real quickly before we get to Nate, while we’re on the subject of the baseball, Purdue coming up, we’ve all we’ve talked a lot about just the implications that Huskers win. One, you feel pretty good about where they are going into the Big Ten Tournament being solidified in that field. But but what does the matchup look like. What what are what do we need to be looking for. What kind of challenges does Purdue maybe present to the Huskers? This is a Purdue team that I still am not resting completely easy on because their numbers, and it’s another team that they played a pretty good non-conference slate leading up to conference play, where they’re somewhat battle tested. They just have not been able to string a lot of conference series together. Now, they did have a good conference series win against northwestern, but other than that, they’ve really struggled in conference play as far as that collective three game series. They’ve got a couple of good hitters. And I know I’ve said this a lot where there’s a few guys in a lineup that we’re talking about that are going to worry you a little bit. Lucas Cook, he’s he’s a 400 hitter. So I mean he’s a great contact guy, very similar to Benjamin Cassius from Michigan that we saw last week where his power numbers weren’t devastating, but he was an extremely good contact hitter. Logan Sutter is another guy that I look at. You know he’s he’s there. He’s there offensively. He’s a guy that comes in slugging at 717. He’s a guy that has 14 home runs. He’s got 61 RBIs. So he’s he is their power surge 21 doubles as well. So that’s going to be the one guy you’ve got to be careful with their pitching. This is what I’m intrigued with because I think Nebraska offensively last weekend left a little bit at the table. Even in that series win against a very good Michigan team. So I think they you look for a good response offensively, and I think Nebraska is going to have some opportunities to get guys on base because this is a pitching staff that is not devastating with the strikeout numbers, and they’ve given up a lot of free passes, and that’s a collective effort not only from their starting rotation, but from their bullpen, too. It’s very similar to what we were talking about with Michigan a week ago, and some of the other teams that Nebraska had success against, but they do have some thump in their lineup throughout. I think it’s a little more top heavy than what we’ve seen Michigan and the iowas, but I do think that this is a team that, for whatever reason, just has not been able to put it together. But they’ve got a couple guys that do worry me on this, on this roster, especially with the way that they can attack offensively. All right. Again coming up tomorrow night what 5:00. Right. 5:00. Yep. Five five both Thursday and Friday. And then 1:00 on Saturday. So Ben flying solo will be on the air at 430 with the pregame show coming up tomorrow night. We’re going to step aside for a break. We have, so we have plenty of time to chat with Nate and get you set for that regional matchup. And the regional fields down in Baton Rouge for Nebraska softball that gets underway on Friday. The Huskers Radio Network Broadcast Center is sponsored by Acres, the Midwest premiere John Deere dealer supplying the equipment and service to advance agriculture and much more. Acres solutions for every field. Welcome back to Sports Nightly. I’m Jessica Cootie, and this is our last show of the week because we have we will have baseball on the air tomorrow night. So this is our last chance to talk with you about the regional matchup for Husker softball. What’s ahead this weekend for the red team. And so to get you all set for all things regional action, we welcome in the voice of Husker softball. Nate Rohrer, who has made his way down to Baton Rouge, is with the team currently just landed. How was the travel Nate we were joking. At least you didn’t have to bust this time, which has been the last couple times the Huskers have been in the postseason. Yeah, you know, it was pretty nice. Charter flight right into Baton Rouge. And fortunately we hit some rush hour traffic. But for the most part we navigated it and we’re getting settled into our hotel. So the trip down wasn’t bad and had a solid flight. It was good enough that I was able to get a little nap in, which of course is critical this time of year. So travel was good. Now we’re ready to get to work. Do you have some food places honed in on that? We always hear about how good the food is down there. Do you have places that you have circled that you’re going to try out while you’re down there? You know what, I hadn’t looked that far ahead. You know, typically Aaron Boling, our director of softball ops, handles our food. But I do feel like I’ve got to have some Cajun at. Some point At least once, you know, maybe tomorrow night that that might be the night to do it after the workout day before we get into the meat of the weekend and you’re dealing with games and weird times and all that. Maybe tomorrow night’s the night where I try and track down some Cajun and have somebody speaking me to me in that dialect that you can barely understand, and everything else. Yeah, I feel like you got to do it. So have you ever been down there to LSU? So Nebraska softball actually brought me down here the one other time, the 2015 regional Nebraska went one and two. But it was a really tough regional. LSU was obviously the top seed and they finished off Nebraska. But it also had Arizona State in it and that’s who beat Nebraska in the first round. I forget who the third other team was, but we were down here for that. I unfortunately did not sample any of the food when we were down here, but it was cool that the softball team, of course, they work out at Tiger Park, the softball stadium, and then I forget if it was recovery or they were lifting or something like that. But at any rate, they they all went to the football stadium. And so while they were sitting in the cold tubs and or lifting or whatever they were doing, a few of us in the travel party got to wander around and see Mike the Tiger sitting there, and the cage between the Pmac, the Pete Maravich Activity Center and the football stadium and walk around there. So walk around on the field of Tiger Stadium, Death Valley. That was pretty cool. The field, the grass was all torn up, but the stadium itself is imposing and impressive, so I’ve at least gotten to see the facilities here. And of course, LSU fans, as we all know, very passionate. They make their presence felt, whether it’s softball or baseball. So that’ll be part of the challenge this weekend. All right. Well what was your initial reaction all things considered, all the projections that were out there when you saw Nebraska was headed to LSU with that field? That’s their I personally thought it was a pretty great draw compared to maybe some of the other places they were projected to potentially go. Yeah, I got to give credit to Eric Lopez, the D1 softball. He has a great podcast on softball and has for a long time, and he’s covered the sport the morning, Sunday morning, the morning of Selection Sunday, he put out his last bracketology and he had Nebraska going to LSU. And that was really the first I had heard of the Huskers going to Baton Rouge, because I had I had always operated with the idea that Fayetteville and Arkansas was a very strong possibility, and that Norman and Oklahoma was at least on the on the draft board, because those are the two places Nebraska could bust to, and especially this year where the regional hosts are so geographically concentrated. I was thinking they’d save money by any means necessary. And if they happen to have Nebraska and Arkansas Regional, that would have been okay. But I think this is a favorable draw for Nebraska. LSU has good pitching. It’s a program that’s perpetually in the NCAA tournament. The offense pretty solid as well, averaging seven runs a game. So they’re a challenge, don’t get me wrong. But it’s not the sort of overwhelming challenge that an Arkansas might have been with Bri Ellis. They’re terrific player of the year candidate in their lineup or Oklahoma, just with everything that would be going on around the Huskers playing the Sooners and the Jordy Ball storyline. And so I think the team at the top of the regional is at least a little more favorable than, than what you might have thought. And then, you know, no disrespect to UConn, they’ve got a really good lineup, but that feels like a three seed. You should be able to handle. And then, you know, the four seed typically is the team you should be able to beat as a two seed. So I feel good about Nebraska’s draw that. That’s the tell you how to build a Swiss watch version of answering what time is it? But I feel good about where Nebraska is situated and the opportunity they have this weekend of getting through regionals and winning this regional. Not to say it’s going to be easy, but it’s definitely a more favorable look than if they had been sent to Fayetteville or Norman, which were the two places I thought they were going. It’s been pretty fascinating just to see the reaction from the softball world. And, you know, a lot of people, a lot of folks, a lot of different outlets have this one circled as one of the tougher regionals and even maybe to the extent of LSU didn’t deserve to have this done to them this tough of a regional. But, I mean, they went 12 and they were 500 in the SEC. They were, what, ninth in the SEC? I mean, I think they it’s not like they were undefeated in the SEC. So but it’s just pretty I think there’s going to be a lot of eyeballs is what I’m getting at on this, this regional specifically because I think a lot of people are penciling in, maybe Nebraska could could pull one of the upsets in this first, first regional weekend. Yeah, I think this one has been circled as regional where the one seed is on upset alert. And, you know, Nebraska is going to be one of the tougher two seeds. You feel good about what they’re doing offensively. Yes. The UCLA game was kind of a step back. But let’s be real. You know Terry was the best pitcher Nebraska had faced in six weeks at least I don’t know that they had faced anybody that good in Big Ten season. So that was a tough adjustment for them. And so yeah I feel you know the regional typically comes down to your pitcher and where Nebraska has somebody who has gotten through two regionals, gotten through to super regionals, gotten to through two Women’s College World Series. I mean, when you have somebody like Jordy Ball as your lead pitcher, that raises your ceiling pretty substantially. So I’m not surprised that there’s been a lot of buzz around Nebraska getting through this regional. Like I said, it’s not going to be easy. Yeah, but it does feel like it’s doable. So let’s I guess start with the first game that Nebraska has to win. You got to beat teams to get to the other side of this. So UConn is up first before you can even talk about LSU. Tell us as you’re diving into this one what you’re learning about this one. Other than they smoked Creighton in the conference title game. And I thank them for their service in that respect. But you know they’re just a great offense that that’s what really catches your eye. Not to say the pitching is bad, but you know offensively when they’re averaging seven and a half runs a game, they’re hitting 325 as a team. I mean this is a team that can hit the ball. And Grace Jenkins who’s their starting catcher. She’s one of the best mid to small conference players in the country. I mean 425 average, 21 homers, 19 doubles. She’s circled, highlighted, bolded, underlined the whole thing on the scouting report. Their offense. They also have some small ball threats I mean Lexi Hastings stole 29 bases this year for them. So I think especially the top of the UConn lineup is going to be very difficult to keep. Totally quiet. Peyton Kenny, their top pitcher, has pitched well in the Big East, but I feel like she she’s going up a step in weight class this weekend against Nebraska. So I feel like, you know, she’ll be a bit of a challenge. But somebody the Huskers should be able to handle. She’s not been dominant, but they’re going to have to score some runs to win because they think UConn can put some runs on the board. What do you foresee the pitching game plan looking like to start this thing off? Well, I haven’t spoken to Rhonda Revelle about it and I’m not sure she would reveal it to me even if I asked. But I would be surprised if anybody other than Jordy Ball started, especially with Nebraska in the in the winners bracket. With that said, depending on how the early part of the game against UConn goes, don’t be surprised if Nebraska pulls Jordy Ball from the game and puts a Hannah Camenzind or a Kylie McGee into the game to try and finish it off. But with that said, I think it’s going to be a pretty heavy dose of 98 really all weekend. You know, she’s definitely can. Jordy is definitely conditioned in a way to where she can be a workhorse for you in an NCAA tournament situation, though the loss to UCLA was disappointing, one of the saving graces of it was that it saved seven innings from her arm and from her legs, and so she’s fully rested. She’s ready to go. I think Nebraska will want to come out and set the tone and get a chokehold on the UConn game early, because, I mean, if you drop that first game, you have to win four straight games against really good competition. Nebraska did that in 2014, in the space of 24 hours. But you don’t want to live that way if you don’t have to. So if you win that first game and then you win that second game, then then you’re really in great shape, which is why I think Nebraska will start ball. But I could see them, especially if they get if they get a lead early, getting her out of the game, putting in McGee and Kalmansohn who have shown themselves to be at least serviceable in this spot and have Jordy at full go for that second game of the regional on Saturday against LSU, which is really the pivotal game of any regional. So then okay, so then the other game, we’ve talked a little bit, LSU and Southeast Louisiana, which people are saying maybe shouldn’t have been a four seed, that it’s not a cakewalk game for LSU to advance either. So that might change up how they approach their pitching as well going into the weekend. But I guess give us a brief synopsis of the other two teams that Nebraska could face this weekend. Well. LSU is traditionally a pretty strong pitching team, and they’ve been good in that respect this year. Maybe a step back from where they’ve been. Sydney Burson has a 2.59 ERA and Jayden Hebner is right in that 279 range in terms of ERA. So they’ve got two good pitchers but not dominant pitchers. The offense has been pretty good seven runs a game Tori Edwards as a freshman is kind of driving the bus as far as the Tiger offense is concerned. Of course, Baton Rouge is a really tough place to come in and win in any sports, so you’re going to have to play against their crowd as well. And LSU’s 30 and four at home this year, so they have a million home games. They’ve got a ton of confidence here. And that’s something you’re going to have to play against when you face LSU here. Southeastern Louisiana. You know they’ve got a terrific pitcher. Macie LaRue 210 ERA. The big the Southland Newcomer of the year. So I you know they’ve got a really good pitching staff. And if they can get some early success maybe get an early run or two, they can really put pressure on you and get you wondering, oh geez, this this directional school from the Southland Conference going to knock us out. But you know that that would be the biggest challenge they present. I would imagine they don’t have the depth to go through the elimination bracket. But if they pull the upset early, you know, they can they can start to dream a little bit. But of course, that pitcher hasn’t faced the sort of lineup she’s going to face this weekend. So, you know, it’s really an interesting regional. I feel like there’s a good balance of offense and defense. I feel like there’s some elite pitching, some pretty good pitching, but not so much to where every game is going to be one nothing. So there’s going to be some scoring, and I think it’s going to be a pretty exciting weekend. All right. Well it all gets started for the Huskers 2:00 central time. So you’ll be on the air 145 here in Nebraska and on the network for us again for our local radio affiliates picking you up down there is a regional action begins. You ready? Ready for this. I’m I’m excited. I’m not quite ready. I got a little more prep to do. That will happen tonight. But certainly excited to see what this Husker team can do at regionals because I think, you know, in case you haven’t noticed, I think they can make a run. But you know, LSU is a challenge. They always are. So it’s going to be very entertaining this weekend to see what how Nebraska stacks up. And if the best version of the Huskers show up for this weekend. Because if they do, they’ve got a shot to make noise. Awesome. Great stuff. Have a great call. Can’t wait to hear you on the airwaves. Coming up. 145 on Friday leading up to 2:00. Got a couple segments left here on Sports Nightly, and we’re going to have some fun here in this segment. We like to do picks here on this program, whether it’s football picks we like, we’ve done golf picks, we get a little competitive. And so we’re going to do it here for the PGA Championship I believe for the Masters my pick was right. Your pick was wrong Nick. What happened. You don’t recall that they. Were all wrong. Yeah I know, so I was just I was excited that I brought up somebody that might be in the mix. And I didn’t even take him. And that was Justin Rose, so that’s fine. Okay, so what we’re going to do here today, we’ve got a couple of the interns also participating here in this one tonight. And Camden is going to be texting in his picks. And then we’re working on a rescue. Got Ahold of Bella yet. Okay. So this might not work out okay. She said she’s not seeing you calling her, so she might just have to text in. So I guess we’ll we’ll have a couple texts. I was going to have Bella, our new intern who is joining us, who will be joining us in the fall. She helped us out with a little bit in spring football, but so she’ll be one of the new. We talked about the graduation rate of some of our older guys. And so she’s one of the new batch of interns. And so I was like, well, this will be a good, good kind of kickoff for you to join in on the PGA picks. Trial by fire I love. It. But we’re we’re having some problems. Getting her on the line. So anyways I guess we’ll go ahead and start and but she had the first pick so I’m not sure what to do here. So let me see here. Tell her she’s on the clock. Give her 30s and we can She said she can do. Like a draft thing like you and I can be the analyst talking about who should be the number one pick. And then when we get the pick is in, we’ll get the do. Do do do do do do do. And then we’ll go. Can you keep doing the. We’ll do the jingle. Okay. Chime. All right. The pick in. She had. So what I did this is live radio folks. I put it into like a spinning wheel on the online. I just picked a random name generator. And she was the first one, which just. And then Camden was second. I’m third, you’re fourth. And it’s going to be a snake draft. And what we’re going to do is we’re going to each pick one golfer each round. And then we’ve done this before in the past with Greg and the big dog circles. And it’s your your total winnings of your three golfers. So you don’t necessarily have to have the winner, but it just makes things a little bit more interesting than just have one pick. So she texted in we might still we’re still going to work on trying to get her live joining us, but she has the first pick. The first pick is off the board and it is Rory. She’s going with Rory McIlroy for her first pick. So nice first pick there. Let’s see. Camden is going to be picking next. And so I’m waiting his text not ideal to have two texters here. I’m going to be honest I should have separated that. In fact I think I will. Oh nope. He’s going with Bryson. How about that? Bryson DeChambeau. Boo I was I thought that was going to be I thought he was going to fall to me. So Rory Bryson off. So I got to do it. I got to go Scotty. Yeah you should. He’s a he’s a he’s a favorite to win it. So I’m going to go with Scotty. All right I like that I’m going to go with because this is where the snake draft helps me out. I’m going to go with Xander Schauffele for my first pick. Nice. All right. And then for. The second pick I’m going to go with Justin Thomas because the guy won at that course. And the guy’s got two not one but two PGA Championships as well. And he’s playing pretty good right now. All right Justin okay I, I this is not going how I thought I was going to go. So I. I guess how do I not go with Jon Rahm. So I guess I’ll go with Jon Rahm. All right. I might I’m gonna I might mix it up and go a little off the beaten path for my third pick. We’ll see how the rest of the picks go. So Camden. I got a sleeper for my third. Camden is on the clock. We’ll see who he goes with. His second pick and then Bella will be next. Oh, he’s going over. Ludwig. So Camden. All right. So now, Bella, if you can hear me, you’re on the clock. Back to back. She looks like she had tried to call in Russ, so I don’t know. Yeah. The couple of texters going back and forth but okay. So I don’t know if she can hear me. This was not working out how I thought it. Was going to work. This is. My favorite live radio moment, right? I thought we were going to have four people picking only one texter, but now we ended up having two texters because we’re having issues with the phone lines, so I don’t know. What. Okay, so let’s see. So if she was supposed to pick two here and then Camden Camden’s listening live. Let’s see. Oh she’s calling Russ. All right, all right. We’re gonna we’re. Gonna get the pick live on the. On the. Here we go. What? Wow. This is what a what? A train wreck here. Maybe we. Should go. Hey, we’re still getting. We’re still getting the job done, though. The job will be done. This is what we’re going to do. I’m going to go and work in our last break, and then we’re going to pick our final pick on the other side of this break. If you’re just tuning in, you missed a train wreck of us trying to do the PGA Pick’ems going into the PGA Championship this weekend, we have a little bit of issues with the phones. We’re going to have our new intern, Bella, call in. She had moved out of the dorms today but couldn’t get her live on here, so she’s texting me pics. I think we’ve got it figured out and she has picked. So this again the snake draft. So she goes back to back. Collin Morikawa and Joaquin Niemann. So now we’ll wait on Camden is next with his final pick. So he and he was like hopefully I haven’t missed anybody. So we will see if Nate. On the meantime, Art in Los Angeles texted in and said we call Nate. Nate the great Nate roar. That’s a nice nickname. You call Nate Nate the great Nick. Nate I just. I just call him the Nate. Because Nate. He’s he’s the type of presence that just is the Nate. You know the booming voice everything. It’s just the Nate. Oh you’re going to. Love this pick by Camden. Oh did he get my guy. Keegan Bradley. Oh captain maybe Ryder Cup captain. Yes Ryder Cup captain. That’s correct. Maybe that’s. Actually that’s a. Decent pick. I like that pick, man. This makes things I don’t know. I got some choices here. Got my heart I got my head I got some. Somewhere in between You know what Brooks Koepka give it to me Brooks. See? Okay okay okay. So there’s. I’m sitting on three that I want to go with here I can’t I can’t go to Patrick Reed’s going to do well. And I it goes against everything in my fiber. Just like I can’t take Bryson DeChambeau for the same reason. I just don’t like them. So I’m not going to Patrick Reed either. It’s down to Sepp Straka or Corey Conners. I’m going to go with Sepp. I’m going with Sepp Straka. I like it, I. Like it. Give me Sepp Straka, Corey Conners, he’s going to he’s going to be the he will finish as the highest Canadian, though he will finish as the highest Canadian in the PGA Championship side. Bet right there. So I, I was also I read some articles too, and one of the favorite sleeper picks from some of the golf analysts is Max Homa. Because even though he has not maybe has played as well this year, he plays really well at Quail Hollow. Yeah. The max see that’s that’s the whole trust factor. Like I do want to I want to pick Jordan Spieth because I think he’s better than him now that he’s past that wrist injury. And this is the this is the major that has his full attention since 2017 because this completes the Grand Slam. But like like Jordan Spieth I can’t go with Max Homa because I don’t trust their game right now. They’ll give you one amazing ride on a Thursday or Friday. And then all of a sudden they’re shooting six over on a Saturday. So I just I can’t trust either one of those guys right now. And Viktor Hovland I’ve been a big fan of Viktor Hovland, but he’s let me down so much that I just I couldn’t go with him. I there’s when we were doing these picks last year, I would pick him every year or every every time. Every time I picked him, he didn’t win. And when I didn’t pick him, he would win. So I just I don’t I don’t I don’t trust him. He’s lost my trust. That’s no that’s fair. There’s there are quite a few golfers on this list I think Justin Rose because if we got into the whole a lock to finish in the top ten, Justin Rose is usually for every major that I ever have any of these types of wagers on, or just having the friendly wagers, Justin Rose is usually in there. I don’t know if there’s a masters hangover for him, so I don’t even know if he would be a lock for a top ten, but I know his odds are okay. I’m with you on Hovland Hovland just right now on his strokes game. Not where I would love for him to be if I’m going to go all in on him right now. Here’s another one that’s kind of interesting that I’m going to throw your way. That wouldn’t shock me if he had a decent go at it. And that is actually Will Zalatoris. Will Zalatoris remember it was two years ago when they played in Oklahoma, in Tulsa. He was right there in the mix. That was the one that Justin Thomas’s last PGA Championship that he won. But Zalatoris is actually not in a very sneaky way, is not terrible at majors and kind of hangs around. So there’s another guy that I think especially the PGA Championship, where he’s shown that he’s played pretty well. He’s a guy that I don’t think is getting talked about a lot, but wouldn’t shock me if he is. If he’s hanging around on Sunday. Between texting and just trying to get the bell on the line, I have no idea who picked what. I’m going to go back and relisten to this segment, but I don’t even know who has what. Do you. Know who you picked? I think I got Scotty. Yep. Jon Rahm? Yep. And Brooks. And Brooks. Yeah, that’s a solid that’s a solid three. That’s a solid three. That’s the who’s who of golf. Yeah it is okay I. Got Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele Sepp Straka. Camden’s got Bryson. I get more Kiawah. Bryce. No Camden got. Oberg and DeChambeau. Oberg and. Keegan Bradley. Bradley. There you go. Yep. And then. Bella had Bella. Definitely had more cows. Rory Joaquin. And yeah. And she had Morikawa call Morikawa. Yeah. So we got we will see. That’s a this is again another one where I feel like I like where golf is at, where a lot of different players can be in the mix. And it’s not like, oh, we know who the guy is going to win every week. And that’s so the bet everybody was trying to take right now. Jessica was the Rory Scotty versus the field. And I think everyone was like, well you take you take Scotty and Rory, right? I don’t I wouldn’t especially the PGA Championship because this is a loaded field that if you were to throw in maybe JT and it makes me want to throw up a little bit. Bryson DeChambeau, if you added those two to Scotty, Rory, I might take that that foursome over the field. But Scotty, Rory versus the field, I’m still taking the field because it is so deep. So I thought you had gotten to where you you kind of can stand Bryson DeChambeau. No. No, it’s all an act. Oh, yeah. No, not my, not me. His whole thing. His whole like I’m the I’m the fun loving guy now. It’s an act. It is such an act right now. The guy’s got good PR people because what he was doing before wasn’t winning him any favors. And now he’s like, okay, now I’ll be like the guy who’s just the totally cool guy. I’m sorry. We all saw his true colors before he went to live. The guy’s a goober. I’m sorry, I’m saying it. He’s a goober. Well, I don’t trust him. Obviously. He’s a good golfer. He’s a great golfer. His PR team has worked on me because I like him better now than I did. Yeah. So I guess I’m a test subject that it worked on because I watched some of his YouTube channels. I’m like, I like that guy. I used to not like him. Now I like him. I’m easy to sway back in your favor. It’s I don’t stay mad forever. I guess I don’t hold grudges. Good for you. That’s. We should all be that way. Okay? But that being said, we have our. We did the draft and we’re doing the three players who who is your pick to win it? Who do you have to win it all? I’m going to go as Andrew Sharpley. Yeah I’m going to take Xander. Oh look who you got there. Yeah. For those of us on. The YouTube. Win, the who’s going to win the PGA Championship. Oh, you’re a big Rory fan, aren’t you? What do you say his name? Rocketboy. Yeah, he calls him Rocket Boy. But. But yeah. Reese’s Reese is going to take Rory. I’m taking I’m taking Xander Schauffele. I’ll go with Scottie. I’ll stick with it. I’m Scotty. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if Rory goes back to back now that he won one. But yeah. Anyways, should be fun. I always love the majors watching golf, but have to balance it with watching some softball over the weekend. I’m excited. I think this I think there’s a lot of interest now, a lot of people paying attention to the softball team going into the postseason. They got a good shot. And so again, not tomorrow. It’s Friday, but this is our last. We’re about to sign off because baseball will be on the air tomorrow. But I’m excited to see what this team can do. They got a good shot to advance and advance to the supers. Yeah no doubt I’m pumped and I would love to see if they can get in that situation. As we talked about trying to host but big, big weekend for them and obviously for baseball to try to try to strengthen your your your I shouldn’t say your seed because you got to get in first. But strengthen your case for the Big Ten tournament. All right. Well, thanks for sticking with us. We will, I guess, declare the winner of our PGA draft Pick’em coming up on Monday. We’ll also have we’ll know where the baseball team is going into the Big Ten tournament. Hopefully they’re for sure in. But but what that week looks like for them. We’ll be able to recap hopefully a winning weekend for Nebraska softball. But that’s going to do it for us. It’s been a fun week. We’ve had a lot of great guests here on this week. We’ll be back for a full two hours on Monday, and we’ve got baseball coming up on the air for you tomorrow. 430 pregame and again pregame for Nate Rohrer and the regional action for Husker softball coming up 145 on Friday with a 2:00 first pitch. Thanks for listening. Have a great weekend, Husker Nation. Hit us up on the text line. Text 402 413 2400 with your Husker thoughts. Want to boost Nebraska’s economy and help the planet?
