most golfers completely misread puts especially with regards to uphill and downhill puts but I’m here to tell you that’s not entirely your fault because the course is designed to confuse you with optical illusions so you think the putts flat when it’s actually downhill you think it’s downhill when it’s actually uphill but the good news is in this video I’m going to show you a neat trick using this super fast green reading system that I’ve been talking about in other recent videos to always spot whether the putt is uphill or downhill and how to adjust let’s jump into it you’re going to love this and it’ll help you a lot so I’m on the angel Park Golf Course in Las Vegas I’ve taught hundreds of putting lessons here I recorded large chunk of my green reading Guru how to become a green reading Guru putting course green reading course here and the reason is this practice green is nothing but one huge optical illusion that way is the mountain which is uphill but it looks like from where I’m standing that that’s downhill and in some ways it is but not nearly as much as it looks that way is the Lost Vegas Valley and I’m literally standing about 60 stories above Las Vegas Boulevard but on this green it looks like it’s uphill that way the whole green is nothing but a big optical illusion and I’m going to talk to you about how to deal with that first a little bit of a recap we’ve been talking a lot on the channel lately about the expert green reading operating system OS fast simple way to read greens that always works here’s the concept if I spread my feet wide apart and stand with my weight balanced on my hips as much as possible then if there’s any slope to the ground my feet are on that slope and if I’m standing balanced then my spine will match that slope whichever direction it is then if I take my Putter and I’ve calibrated or it’s balanced in such a way that it hangs purely vertical now if I’m standing on a slope that’s like this I’m going to turn my spine a little bit tilt my spine a little bit and if I get my eye over my spine and hang my putter straight up and down and I’m fixed on a Target out there in the distance and I put my hands with the top of the putter there and an imaginary straight line to that Target and I have the bottom of the putter shaft there my spine is tilted like this my putter is hanging straight and there’s a gap right here between bottom of the putter shaft on a straight line to the Target and top of putter shaft with hands at the Target that Gap gives me a starting point for an aim line then I calibrate and adjust for Speed lots of videos on that green reading method so you can go and and find those I’ll put links to them in the video description what I want to talk about now is using that method very quick and fast to determine whether a putt that you have is uphill or downhill and what you do is let’s say my ball is down here and the hole is up here I walk out on the green along that putting line between and I’ve already read the break using this method or whatever method then I pick a Target somewh on the green maybe it’s an old hole maybe it’s somebody left a club on the side of the green maybe it’s a golf bag what maybe it’s a putter head cover whatever don’t put yours down there intentionally to use it that way that would be cheating but if there’s one there you use that that’s your first object or your first Target and then you find a second Target on a straight line and now my putting line is this way and I’m perpendicular to that putting line looking back at the first Target spread my feet wide apart get my chest pointed directly at that first Target my zipper my belt buckle and then I line up with my putter hanging perfectly vertical if I’m standing on any slope that will be reflected the top of my putter shaft my hands right beside that Target and the bottom shaft show me that where I’m standing this hand is over here a little bit the bottom and I’m exaggerating it now the Gap is really about that much of an angle but for purposes of illustration there’s an angle here well the direction of slope is always from your hand towards the target so if my hand was over here the direction of the slope would be that way and where I’m standing that looks downhill and it certainly is but where standing that way is downhill and so now I know that this put comes uphill and it hits this Ridge or crown right in here and then it starts back downhill so helpful now all you have to do when you know a putt is uphill or downhill any green reading system that you use is going to have an adjustment where you give it less break if it’s it’s an uphill putt more break if it’s a downhill putt using the ego screen reading system that I’ve talked about in the last several videos if the putt was an uphill putt I’m going to be rolling it with a little more Pace I’m going to subtract one Gap if it’s a downhill putt I’m going to give it a little less Pace because gravity is going to be pulling it downhill and I’m going to add a gap pretty simple there now let me give you an example example of doing that on this green so I know that this putt is from there up to the hole which is here I know that this putt is uphill but I also know that it’s an optical illusion because geographically that’s downhill but that’s also downhill from this hole but that’s uphill confusing so what I do is using that method I’m on the line of my putt and I’m about halfway like the crest of the ridge is about right here and then I think it flattens out but I don’t know so what I’m going to do is I’m going to pick an object a first object in this case I’m going to make it the camera tripod that’s perfect straight at the camera I’m going to spread my feet somewhere very near my putting line point my chest straight at the camera tilt get my eye over my spine and then line up where the bottom of my putter is along that straight line and the top of my putter near my hands is out the camera and what it looks like to me is there’s about that much Gap so this part really is not nearly as uphill as it looks in fact what really happens is the ball gets about here and then it starts downhill this way and when I see people work on this putt I bring people out to this practice screen to work on the putt so many times they put it up the hill and then completely off the green over there another 15 feet past the hole because of this optical illusion this slope here is three and a half or 4% but then coming down this way and you don’t see that because of the optical illusion it’s a about 1 and a half% from here to the whole downhill and people often don’t see that and so once I’ve used this method to see that this putt is uphill for part of the way and then downhill so it’s not nearly as much uphill as it looks like then I will start to think about I’ve got to get up the hill but I want to pretend that my hole so now my imaginary hole is here versus where the actual hole itself is here that way I don’t run it way past now here’s that putt 40 ft uphill then back downhill I’ve made an adjustment to line and Pace you can see when it starts downhill curves and goes back into the hole so here’s another example I’ve got a putt here about 18 ft and it looks pretty flat there’s the ball there’s the hole come over this way ball hole looks relatively flat but I want to know is from there to there uphill or downhill so I have this 18-footer here there’s the ball there’s the hole it looks relatively flat but I think it might be a little bit downhill that way I’m not sure you can do this very quickly I’ve read the green I know where I want to start the ball but I’m going to get perpendicular to that line so my line is here and there’s an old hole on the ground right there well I’m going to make that old hole my first object or first Target so what I’m going to do is stand with my feet spread apart along the line of my putt line up my belt buckle my spine straight at that old hole and then I’m going to pick a line an imaginary line from that Old hole straight back to me and I’m going to put the bottom of my putter on that line you noticed I’ve tilted my head a little bit so that my eye is in line with my spine my belt buckle and I put the bottom of my putter on that line and the top of my putter is just a little bit off like the old hole is here and the top of my putter is about an inch off of that which means that this putt that I thought was a little bit downhill is actually uphill going that way so because it’s an uphill putt I know number one I’ve got to hit it a little bit firmer and number two I know because I hit it a little bit firmer it’s going to be going slower so now let’s step around here and line up and make that putt so I originally read this put and had my starting line here but now I’ve looked at it really quickly from the side and saw that it is uphill so I’m going to cut my starting line by one Gap and make it there because I’m going to be hitting it a little firmer a little more Pace it’s going to break a little bit less let’s see how that works [Music] as you can see it makes a big difference having a quick way to determine if a putt is uphill or downhill and using that to adjust your pace and your starting Target line and you can do this quickly no matter what green reading method you use if you’re not 100% certain whether a putt is uphill or downhill use this method quickly go out and stand beside your line pick a Target perpendicular to that line line up on it use this method to see if the putt is uphill or downhill then make your adjustment but do it quickly don’t spend a lot of extra time and if you like Fast quick green reading tips and other helpful information to help you make more putts then you know the great drill for that like subscribe comment share check out this video on the screen now and in the meantime here’s to you making more PS [Music]

Dang, can’t “drop” my headcover on the way in.
Hi John, thank you for introducing me to egos! I’m still working out the kinks, but I can truly see it’s benefits! Last night I used the circle drill on the putting green, moving back 1 foot with each successful make. My last putt was from 15 feet!! The winter practice from your courses has helped immensely. Bob
Noisy background but this green is good for showing optical illusions. Tons more Green Reading content at https://johnevans.graphy.com
This will help. I understand the concept, but how do you keep yourself from leaning your spine upslope? I’m not sure when my spine is aligned correctly. Thanks!

Finally thawing out in Michigan. Can't wait to practice the EGOS method. Thank you for teaching it.
Hello John. Another useful tool; it used to spin my head especially for those under 6 foot puts or worse the 3 to 4 foot; which way does it go – the hole is cut with a raised volcano edging because it was not flattened when cut – is it straight; look from behind, from the side and then it looks different again when you stand over it. I used to miss a lot of these, much more success now – cheers to you.
Excellent. It may be my imagination, but, I think you’re actually putting better, I hope you’re keeping stats since you changed to the Ergos method..
I get how this helps with reading uphill or downhill. I don't understand how this helps if the putt is both uphill and then downhill. Seems like you were using your eyes to determine that was both uphill and downhill. What if your eyes cannot see that is both uphill and downhill? What is the analysis plan? Thank you!
Good work John seems to work thanks
