In a thrilling turn of events at LIIV Golf in Mexico City, Tom McKibben has made headlines by raking in over €100,000, more than double what Rory Mroy earned this weekend, all while choosing to ignore the advice of the Mast’s champion. Hailing from Belfast, McKibben, who turned professional just two years ago in 2021, has quickly established himself as a rising star on the European Tour. He made waves by clinching the Porsche European Open in 2023. And just a year later, he finished 18th in the season standings, which opened the door for him to play alongside the legendary Mroy on the PGA Tour. However, the allure of LIIV Golf proved too strong to resist. Despite Mroyy’s cautionary words against joining the Saudi back tour, McKibben made the leap and it seems to have paid off handsomely. Competing at the prestigious club de Golf Chipultipek, he finished tied for 34th at two overpar, but his earnings soared to around €120,000. In contrast, Mroy, who partnered with Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, finished 12th and took home less than half of that amount. The weekend also saw Chilean star Wa wee Neiman continue his dominance on the LV circuit, winning his third individual event in just six starts and pocketing a staggering 3.5 million with a score of minus6, leaving McKibben 18 shots behind. But it wasn’t all bad news for the young golfer. Thanks to his teammates John Rom, Trell Hatton, and Caleb Surat, McKibben’s team celebrated a victory in the team competition, claiming a whopping 2.6 6 million euro prize. With a total payday of €120,000, McKibben’s earnings have eclipsed those of Mroy and Lowry, who were hoping to defend their title at the Zurich Classic. It was definitely in my mind, but to me, I wasn’t in any of the majors or Ryder Cup anyway, McKibben recalled. The opportunity to play with these guys out here more often and more consistently was definitely a huge factor. I’m not in those majors anyway at the minute, so that really didn’t bother me too much. Being young and 22, I’ve watched this last couple of years since LIIV started. It’s something I really like to watch. It’s very different and appeals to more people my age. The chance to learn from some of the best players in the world week in and week out is something that really appealed to me. I like the whole concept of everything.
