Golf Getaway at The Vines Golf and Country Club – The Ellenbrook Course
welcome to golf getaway and welcome back to the vines golfing Country Club in the Swan Valley just north of Perth The Vines is two championship courses and today I’ll be playing The Allenbrook course with Mark tibbles the three time wa teaching pro of the year and I’ll have a nearest the pin competition with Ian prior one of the western forces finest rugby Players let’s hope his golf is as good as his footy [Music] [Music] hi there I’m Andrew Mira mum and I’m Mark tibbles PGA professional at The Vines Resort and Country Club and welcome to the alen Brook Golf Course the alen Brook Golf Course at the vines was designed signed by Graham Marsh and Ross Watson and is a par 72 6541 M Championship Golf Course located in the Swan Valley right here in Perth alen Brook is the ideal Golf Course to showcase the bush and Wildlife that Western Australia is famous for the size and undulations of the greens are a real feature on average they have to be some of the biggest in Australia and four parts are very common so come on mirror let’s go out on the course there’s lots to teach you oh seriously I’m not not that bad am I we’re at the first it’s a 374 M par 4 looks relatively benign but it’s the second hardest hole so it’s an early wake up and with me is Mark tibbles he’s a head pro here at the vines and he’s also the wa teaching pro of the year and he’s also won it three times in the last four years so I’m in good company and the good news is he’s going to be talking kids girls and disabled golf so we’re going to have lots of good Yarns out there on the course Mark what are we going to do with this hole mate well it’s a short path for Andrew it’s a great opening hole and uh we’ve got a bunker up there on the left the closer you can keep the ball to the bunker without going in the bunker the better line into the pin and uh tricky green so today the pin’s front left it’s probably the easiest pin on the green and alen Brook big greens swes I’ve heard a lot about them yeah it’s an interesting course there’s um a little bit more room off the tea than there is on the Lakes course but the greens are just as interesting okay well just just over that bunker there or tight to it yeah lovely shot Andrew oh beautiful Mark straight over that bunker oh yeah good shot went a bit long uh Mark and on these greens they’re pretty big aren’t they they certainly are it pays to be below the hole on some of these cuz there’s some pretty big swes yeah no I’m not guaranteed a two part here am I with this Swale get in there a good try oh well done nice pass saver thank you you one up or three puted after that Swale [Music] great shot [Music] beautiful oh nice great shot [Music] no [Music] sh so we’re here on the seventh hole on the Ellenbrook course 360 M par 4 it’s very visual hole we’ve got a lake on the left we’ve got bunkers on the right and with a pin today tucked away on the left the best line is down the right side Mark girl they’re not playing a lot of golf these days are they why is that and what are you doing about it I think it’s always been difficult to get girls into golf um one thing we’ve done here in recent times is have an exclusively girls program uh girls like to do things with their friends and we’ve actually got 40 girls now that come regularly for golf lessons so we’re looking at putting together a big program for them and why is it that they don’t tend to play it as much as guys um I think sometimes it’s because the boys the boys muck about a little bit sometimes you’ve got one girl in a group of 10 boys but we’ve got to uh uh a stage now where we’ve got our girls program running they’re all um playing together with their friends and and they’re having a lot of fun I guess that’s the key isn’t it you got to have fun that’s right all right well you one up Mark good luck thank you great shot straight down the middle beautiful drive mark thank you very much yeah pleased with the angle in from here yeah it’s the right side I hear you having some good success with the girls yeah we have actually in fact we’ve just come back from a tournament we had four of our girls qualify for the women’s hold and scramble National final I think it’s the first time a junior girls group have qualified and we managed to come second so to play with four of my young girls was a was a great thrill wow so so young girls playing against senior ladies was it yes there were there were a few seniors there so we knocked off knocked off the old Ducks but unfortunately we couldn’t beat the team that came first there was a couple of young ones in there too and uh they were just too good last week all right well let’s see how you go with this one thank you a good shot that was a nice shot beautiful is there a legitimate career path for good female golfers sure yeah there is and hopefully through our golf program we’ll we’ll find some state players we’ve got one girl playing State Golf at the moment and uh you know if those girls work hard enough then sure there’s the opportunity you look at the Lydia Co and the Korean girls in particular have raised the bar in recent years they certainly practice hard don’t they they do and you know you only get out what you put in well let’s see if you can put this in oh good speed here it comes here it comes a you can have that one Mark well on I’m on the beautiful signature hole here at the vines it’s the eth it’s 152 M path three and with me is Weston for scrum half I PRI I welcome to golf getaway no worries thanks for having me today great to be here pleasure and I you’ve come from Zimbabwe originally and now you’re playing in Australia yeah um parents are obviously from Zimbabwe and uh we’re lucky enough to get out um sort of before the violence started happening and uh my parents were living here originally before that so um you know all our family were farmers and they were lucky enough to get away and um nothing really happened to them too seriously but unfortunately I had to sleep on my office floor for about three years cuz they all came through our house so that was a good bit of fun but um no happy to be where I am now very cool and you’ve come via the Reds via the bromes and you new at the force yeah um obviously as you said done a bit of the rounds at other teams had a great two years at the brmes and a great year at the Reds of the year before so hoping to bring a few things that I’ve learned at the other teams over to the force and um you know we’re building for a really big year ahead and I hear you play a bit of golf yeah I dabble mate um haven’t played as much as I’d like during preseason obviously the boys are working quite hard and bodies are quite sore at the moment but yeah uh it’s really good um just to get away from the game and sort of you know like I said get away from rugby and just relax and have a bit of my own time and do you do it during the season or it’s more in the offseason You’ll Play Golf um I try and do it during the season as well but um preseason we have more structured schedules so um it’s easier get away then but when we travel around we try and um play myself and a few other boys at one of the local courses all around so it’s been good in that regard I’ve played in Durban Cape Town um when we played for the brumes I came and played in Wembley so yeah trying and get around as much as possible good good on you and the Western Force this season they got a big year planned obviously building on last year but what what’s the plan for the year um well uh obviously they made big big strides and improvements last year so I’m um they’re trying to build upon that this year and hopefully guys like myself and other guys that recruited like Zack Holmes and Luke Moran um can really help to step up to the next level and bring some of the experience that we’ve learned at other teams so obviously we’re hoping to do a lot better this year and um we’ll see how we go from there and you’ll be playing for the Wes at the end of the year hoping so it’s always a goal but um yeah got to get on that on that Paddock first and put in a few games and then it’ll all sort of take care of itself from there okay well and it’s custom on golf getaway we have a nearest the pin with all our celebs you Keen definitely mate definitely looks pretty tough but uh see how it Go doesn’t it looks like a nice hole this one tell you what what if I win what about a uh signed Weston Force Jersey yeah I think we can do that maybe a signed and uh named one with your name on the back ready to go I think yeah yeah defin looking forward to that well it’s your honor where you go thank you oh my God he’s straight at the PIN oh that’s pretty good it’s not inside yours hang on hang on this look pretty good I think T made’s you yep mine’s Nike up here uh hang on 4ot from 152 yeah I’ll take what’s going on you Mir all right we got to drain the pup for the win try and sink this one get the birdie oh o you can have that mate you can have it thanks and thanks for coming on get away thanks very much having me um I know it was nearest to the pin but as a consolation priz just uh grab it this for you oh watch’s this what’s going on here um so here we’ve got Weston Force jersey with miror on the back we’re on the 10th and I’ve decided to get my first lesson because I’ve ended up on The Fairway in this long Fairway bunker about 150 M out from the green Mark biggest issue I have when I go in the long Fairway bunkers is do I just punch out with a shorter club or do I try and go for the green okay obviously I’ve got a few clubs here got a few options there it really depends on two things there mirror first depends on the LIE of the ball if the ball’s sitting well that gives you options the depth of the bunker is the other thing too and how close you are to the lip so in this situation we’ve got plenty of room between us and the lip we’ve got a very good lie that now we can start thinking about distance and we can be a bit more ambitious so we’re 150 out if you hit say what’ you hit 150 normally say six iron six iron probably go up one to a five yeah that way you can swing smoothly which is important because you want to keep a good footing couple of little things with this shot don’t lower the feet too much just establish a good footing because if you lower your feet you tend to hit behind the ball you’re better off catching this one a little thin rather than a little heavy right so um ball position fairly Central and we’re just looking at the top of the ball trying to pick it off pretty clean gripping down an inch two helps us avoid hitting the the sand first okay so you’re going to aim for the ball not the sand yeah we’re going to hit the ball as cleanly as we can and if I catch it a little thin I don’t mind because at least the ball’s going to go forwards oh wow good connection yeah I was happy with that one okay my turn on you go okay so I I’ll take the six on I’ll take the risk Y and I’m going to take a lot of ball little bit of feet very little yeah just lower the feet slightly just to give yourself a footing down the grip slightly quiet legs and that’s a good shot out of there nice and clean and that way you can get plenty of distance on that shot I’ve had my lesson I’ve come storming back and we’ve come to my favorite hole here on the alen brook course it’s the 12th and it’s a 56 M par five it’s trouble out there isn’t it it’s a super par five probably the best par five on the course and big tree in the middle of the Fairway interestingly enough when we had the Johnny Walker here in 2009 the golf course were told to Lop the side of that tree to allow players to get around the right side of the tree but uh ideal line here is a little bit of a over the tree with a touch of fade it’s a slight dog leg to the right okay I believe there’s a few bunkers up there too lots of cross bunkers to contend with with the second shot shot very good beautiful both distinctly different lines aren’t they Mark they are yeah that one there just flirted with a trap a little bit but it should be fine well that looks as if it might have caught the left trap there mirror oh no trouble something a little unique I’m not really used to this we’re in a big bunker the problem is I’ve got to clear another bunker before I get to the pen which is probably about 50 m away and it’s obviously quite um soft sand what should I do well it is traditionally one would regard this as the hardest shot in golf so it’s a difficult shot but sandwich would be the club from here you’re going to need a pretty aggressive swing trying to hit just behind the ball Square the face rather than open the face and that hopefully should get you the distance okay we’ll see how it go oh that’s all right that’s beautiful great shot mirror nice Tac there mirror got out of jail there thank you yeah well done thanks to my advice I reckon with that bunker shot not my ability was it this is for a half oh easy easy yes hey we’re off to the hardest hole number 13 we’re here at the 18th we’ finally arrived it’s a 5506 M par five dog legs around the left looks pretty St straightforward it’s a good hole actually and uh one where a good drive down the left side you could pick up a birdie nice way to finish had a couple already well I need one cuz I’m one down okay and now something more passionate more close to home or to the heart is your interest in disable golf tell me about that yeah well something I thought about doing about five years ago and was encouraged to do by a guy from adelay called Gary har who was very passionate about disabled golf um I run a program for people disabilities and special needs an adult program and a junior program and uh that’s something that um is is very rewarding for me and and hopefully enjoyable for those that come to our classes and do you have to modify the lessons or how does it all work well we do everybody’s different we’re teaching people in wheelchairs people with amputations one leg one arm um and plus a lot of intellectually disabled people too so uh everybody’s different and you have to treat each person very much on a one onetoone basis and obviously very satisfying it’s wonderful it’s just to see people have fun get a bit of fresh air socialization and uh you know hopefully hit some good golf shots too well let’s see if we can hit some good golf shots final hole lovely shot a little drawer and that’s in the May office that’s you can go for the Green from there oh just as nice oh great shot Mark so mirror great shot to get to here two puts to win the match and aart for an eagle so um yeah easier said than done Mark I’ve still got a big right to left Swale here probably 30t out and I’ve been battling with my distances so what would you recommend for someone who’s having issues with distance and obviously reading greens okay well I see you’ve lined your ball up to where you want to start the ball so that’s good you got a picture in your mind of which way the ball’s going to curve as for the speed look at the Target as you make your practice swings try and get a feeling of reacting to the Target feel the distance and uh two PS my first Eagle on alen Brook or one Pat for your Eagle oh a bit short see that’s the distance pretty good for Speed it’s just the slope just took it off a little to the left there hopefully I can get the PA or the birdie even a here we go here we go he’s got it well done thanks buddy cheers my chance for the birdie yeah not kidding yeah well played never in doubt thanks Mark and thanks for showing me around alen Brook at the up too good for me today thanks sir Andrew taught me some good lessons today mate it must have helped cheers well I hope so Mark you’ve lived in the region for well over 10 years and you’ve been the pro here for for at least the same amount of time you must love the place yeah it’s a great place Andrew it’s great place to live and we’ve got two wonderful courses challenging of course we’ve had some great tournaments here and uh teaching fulltime I get to meet some wonderful people too very satisfying place to work it certainly is it’s a it’s a beautiful environment well we’re only 30 minutes from Perth too and you know you’d swear we’re out in the middle of the country with all the kangaroos all the bird life all the water just feels so surreal out here do certainly does yeah and and uh as You’ found today the course very challenging some massive greens you know and uh it makes a very interesting ping well some of your tips certainly helped me didn’t it with the angulations and and all of that well I hope so too and the bunkers were excellent so uh well done good enough to beat me today thank you well here’s the alen Brook at the vines Cheers Cheers thanks for coming out well there it is I’m Andrew Miram mum and I’m Mark tibbles and thanks for watching golf Getaway on
