Tom McKibben shines in LI Golf, outturning Rory Mro. In a thrilling turn of events, Belfast’s own Tom McKibben has made headlines by pocketing over 100,000 from his impressive finish at the LI golf tournament in Mexico City. What’s even more remarkable, by choosing to follow his own path instead of heeding the advice of golf legend Rory Mroy, McKibben ended up earning more than double what the Mast’s champion took home this weekend. Since turning professional in 2021, McKibben has quickly become a name to watch on the European tour. He made waves by clinching the Porsche European Open title in 2023. And just a year later, he finished 18th in the season standings, opening the door to the prestigious PGA Tour and the chance to play alongside his fellow Northern Irishman, Mroy. However, the allure of LI golf caught McKibben’s attention and despite Mro’s cautionary words against joining the Saudi back tour, McKibben made the leap. This past weekend, he showcased his skills at club at golf chip, finishing tied for 34th with a two over par score, which netted him around 110,000. In contrast, Mroy, who played alongside Shane Lowry at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, finished 12th and earned less than half of McKibben’s winnings. While Chilean golfer Wii Neiman dominated the LI Tour in Mexico, claiming his third individual title in just six starts and a staggering 3 million pound prize. McKibben still had plenty to celebrate. Thanks to his teammates John Rom, Tier Hatton, and Caleb Surat, who finished at -12, – 11, and -7 respectively, McKivven’s team clinched the team title, adding a happy 2.25 million to their collective earnings. With his 100,000 pound payday and a share of the team’s prize, McKibben’s earnings surpassed those of Mroy and Lowry, who despite a solid performance, ended up tied for 12th and earned £50,000 each. The chance to play with these guys more often was a huge factor for me. I’m not in those majors right now, so that didn’t bother me too much. Being young and 22, I’ve watched Liv since it started. It’s something I really enjoy watching. It appeals to more people my age. The opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the world week in and week out is something that really appealed to me. I like the whole concept of everything. As McKibben continues to carve out his own path in the world of golf, it’s clear that he’s not just following in the footsteps of giants like Mu.
