John Daly made golf cool
Good vid. Technology is the main reason it man Hank could send it. What happened w that guy ?
Wouldn't it be cool if we knew all of their swing speeds.
And equipment
And balls
The biggest change was the ProV1 around 2001.
Everything apart from that is incremental.
Golf courses are getting longer faster than the drivers are. Torrey pines playing almost 8k yards now. Oakmont and lacc had 300 yard par 3s. Golf ball rollback is outrageous
Golf ball and golfers becoming fitter and stronger more than driver technology
WOW!!! That sure was "shocking".
Just go back to persimmon. Baseball doesn’t let pros use aluminum bats….
Funny thing, if you notice the chart, in the last 22 years the distance of the longest driver hasn't changed hardly at all. Most likely, a 20-year-old Driver will give you virtually the same distance as a 2025 driver if you are swinging fast. it might change slightly different for slower, swing speeds, I don't know that for sure.
You had to be careful in order to hit the driver from the screws of persimmons. 250 yards with a persimmon and a wound ball that spun like crazy was respectable. Now the sweet spot is huge, the moment of inertia is higher, ball speeds are maintained across the face, the balls are not wound and are engineered to react like old school distance rock like balls, the players are more athletic. Players can risk higher swing speeds today while doing so back in the persimmon days was very risky given the pea sized sweet spot. The driver went from the most unforgiving club to the most forgiving with a sweet spot the size of a credit card.
