An Exclusive Look Inside Tieke Golf Estate: NZ’s Elite New Course with Glenn Jones of Waikato Sheds

[Music] That’s good, Sean. That was better. Well done. Welcome back to the wonderful world of Widow Sheds team. Uh today we’ve got something very special. We’re here at Tiki Golf Estate here in the Waco, which is really it’s a jewel in in the Wiko’s golfing crown. Why are we here? We’ve got a strong association with this club uh with the construction of several buildings, but we won’t dwell on that today. We’ll touch on that later on, but today’s really about understanding what is Tiki and why is it such a great experience. Uh it’s really a must-see or golfing uh destination. Not just for the golf and the amazing design, the course, but also all the facilities here. It’s a real it’s a real package. Um people come here just for the amazing award-winning bro and not even play golf. So that’s what Tiki is all about. Uh we’ll get in there today. The uh the plan is to have a bit of a tour, play some of the awesome holes, understanding the um the exceptional design layout and the principles of why how it’s been made. Yeah. So we hope to have a couple of words with the GM, bit of a meet and greet with Scott, um maybe even uh Jason Lang, who’s the head greener, understand his magic out here and how he’s developed such an awesome course. It’s always in a magnificent order. Um I’ve got a special guest. So, I’ll introduce that guest in a little while when we do a tour of the course and play some awesome holes. I’ll point out some of the great facilities here from the driving range, the chipping green, the putting green, the pro shop, the award-winning Kuran Lad Broke Bro, and more. It’s an awesome place. If you’ve never been here, Tiki, you’ve got to come. It’s awesome. It’s got a fascinating history. First established in 1938 was Loiel. Um, I’ve got a fond memories of this is my very first membership here. uh back in the late 80s early 90s a few haircuts ago but I was a member here had my first golf lesson with Mark Tapper he was the pro at lock uh that’s a long time ago um then it obviously combined with the wonderful narrows just down the road just over the river and they combined to form Riverside uh that’s now closed narrows and today we are we have what is an amazing place and that’s Tiki Tiki Golf Estate so we’ll go and have a tour we’ll We’ll have a nosey around. We’ll meet people. We’ll talk to Scott. And we’ll get into it. We’ll see if we can find him. Cheers, guys. And here’s Scott. Morning, Scott. How’s it going, mate? Yeah, good. Um, standing in in front of the wonderful sponsors board. We’re I said earlier we’re a local uh business, proud uh supporter and sponsor here. You’ve got some great sponsorship. Um, I guess that’s pretty fundamental to the success here at Tiki. Yeah, it’s been massively important the support of our sponsors. Uh we’ve got a a great range, many of them based from the Wetto like white sheds are and um they’ve been massive in helping us get to where we are. Fantastic. How’s the membership? Well, how how is the club at the moment? The membership’s going good. Yeah, we’re going great. G golf’s booming, but um yeah, we we’ve done really well. Nice summer we’ve had and uh yeah, we’re pretty much u at our at our maximum of members at the moment. Oh, is that right? Fantastic. Well, we’re out there today. We noticed the uh there’s been some cing on the greens. Um uh how would you describe the condition? And I suppose I should be talking to uh Jason the green keeper. But I couldn’t get grab him. He’s too busy working out there. What’s your He’s always looking for perfection. So he’d probably say, “Oh, I could come along.” But no, it’s come back really well. Obviously, we’ve had a very dry summer. Um bit of rain recently, so no. Yep. Pretty well. And on the calendar, is there what sort of tournaments or what sort of big events are coming up soon? Uh we’ve got our family championship, which is quite a unique event. Our father traditionally father and son, but now it’s obviously mixed genders and intergenerational event. So, it’s quite a cool cool event for us to host. So, and your background has it always been golf? Uh, not playing wise, work-wise, yes, but uh not much of a golfer myself, but yeah. Where did you come from to here? Uh, I’ve come from Omani Golf Club, but through the traps of various courses. So, fantastic. Awesome. Now, I know you didn’t really want to get on the camera, so we won’t I won’t hold you here too much longer, but really appreciate uh the words. Appreciate letting us have a bit of a tour and show off this destination that Tiki is. And it is very much a destination and an experience, isn’t it? It’s far more than just golf. 100% far more than golf. You asked about membership, which is massively important. That’s the foundations of our club. But we do do love to see green food players in here. And obviously our unlicensed restaurant, which isn’t just for members and golfers. It’s for the for the general public as well. Not too shabby in there, is it? Pretty lucky. Pretty nice views. It’s fantastic. But the food’s amazing. Award-winning Kuran Labro. Uh are the chefs in here. I I can attest to uh the food. I’ve had a few meals and and few dinners and functions here and it’s just fantastic. Sure is. Awesome mate. Thanks Scott. Well, cheers. See you next time. Hey team. So we’re on the first here at Tiki. Um I told you I had a special guest. This is Rachel Jackson from Bailey’s. She’s a specialist lifestyle residential specialist. Bailey’s happens to be my sister. Uh a proud um proud local a local supporter and member here at the course. and she’s joining me. Had the privilege of playing a few holes today. We’ll have a walk and talk and um morning. Yeah. Morning. Morning. So, what do you love about this course? What I love about it is I just love how they they look after it so well. Um and it’s a great course. It’s very challenging, but um and it’s new and it’s it’s the best one in the in the country, I think. Yeah. Yeah. It’s a big call, but I think you’re not wrong there. You’re not wrong. It’s pretty special. She’s a special place. They do look after a day. It’s always mint. And some people say when you’ve played here, every round’s unforgettable. And I think that’s true. You always find something different, experience something new, and from hole to hole. Quite quite a unique uh unique design, unique landscape the way it lays. Someone said to me, “It feels like a Lynx course because the when they developed it, they didn’t force the the course. They didn’t force it on. They worked with the contours, the natural contours of the of what was here. So that’s basically created what feels like a a coastal lengths course. Um just flows and rolls and uh but it is challenging, isn’t it? It is challenging. Yes, you have good days and bad days, but mainly good days, but it’s very green. Um other courses I’ve heard, you know, um just it’s just not as green and and a lot of brown, but yeah, we’ve been very very lucky with the green keepers. I reckon that they look after it. So, we we’re going to get into it. So, cheers, guys. Uh you might uh you might have a giggle and a laugh, but we’ll we’ll get into it and and we’ll walk and talk as we go. Cheers, guys. Oh. Oh, [Music] hey. All righty. So, we’re down here. We got about 90 95 m. I think a pitching wedge might either get me on the green or in the rough. One unique thing here at this course is uh all the technology and the GPS. Uh you see these signs saying get off, take your carts to the side. Um basically it’ll kill the cart. You can only reverse it. Actually, um it takes over them in some ways. So you it’s trying to protect all the the wonderful condition around the green. So it forces you not to take carts up there and damage it or leave tire treads and stuff. So yeah. So it means we’ve got to go where the arrow [Music] goes. All right. P. Woohoo. No. I was going that way [Music] there. Woo. Oh, just short. Too short. This is the fourth hole at Tiki. And so that’s the the hardest course and that’s called stroke one. Um strokes meaning 1 to 18 from hardest to easiest in terms of difficulty. This is one of the hardest. And it’s par four supposed to be down there and in the hole for four. And at its longest tea off here it’s over 400 m long. So it’s pretty brutal. Yeah. coming. Cheers. Coming back to the middle a bit. Nice. Oh, too hard. We’re now on the 14th hole. Um, it’s a rather tricky one. You’ve got to sort of get get up and then it dog legs to the right. But, um, no, it’s a neat hole. It’s a little bit challenging and then there’s Yeah, usually sometimes we ended up in the sand, but we’ll see how we go. Ugly. It’s a big sand pit. Yeah. And we played in that sand pit a few times. Yeah. It’s a challenging one, isn’t it? Um so yeah, I uh I introduced Rachel earlier. Um Bailey’s. How’s it going? So you’re um lifestyle and residential. Yeah. Yeah. How’s the market? Um the market the market’s certainly improving um obviously with the ACR um announcement. So we’ve come down a little bit more. Um interest rates have come down. The banks are getting a little bit competitive which is great. So we are seeing some good activity, good phone calls, good attendance at open homes. Awesome. Um yeah. So um so I think this this year will prove to be good. That’s cool. Um so we’re seeing some good activity. Yeah. Yeah. No. Awesome. That’s good to hear. We some good results in the auction room. So yeah. Fantastic. Yeah. and we love um we love what you do cuz we uh you know we’re putting sheds on beautiful lifestyle blocks and what’s going on in the market. There’s a lot of talk around the 70 square meter uh consentfree dwellings that’s um that’s pretty hot now in the in the media and in the news and that’s coming into effect in the new year. Uh we’re getting inquiries already. So um if you’re thinking of that uh reach out reach out to sheds Rachel as well from Bailey. So what what’s your take on that? So yes, yeah, with the lifestyle properties, um we we are getting um a lot of um families living together and um parents buying with their children and then they they’re living on this in the second property, the second dwelling or the 70 m dwelling um being used for yeah extra income and also a lot of Airbnb or bed and breakfast um situations where they are doing that. So it’s great. So you’re getting a bit of inquiry on that too. It’s never a better time now to reach out to us. Don’t wait until the rules come in. Talk to us now and we can we can sort of navigate you around that. Um cuz it’s not far away. It’ll come pretty quick. And yeah, we’re really pleased about that. So, if we can knock out that council, that’s a big part of the whole uh timeline e from um from starting to completion cuz our build on the 70 square meter is only what it’s a week. Wow. It’s kind of about a week um roughly after concrete’s down. So, you know, no council. We’re really excited about that. There’s going to be a few things to navigate. You know, there will be you’ve got to you’ve got to lodge that with council. Tell them when you’re starting and when you’re finishing and so there’s a few checks and balances and definitely still got to comply with, you know, all those district plan rules on setbacks and site coverage and things, I think. But, um, it’s bring it on. Yeah. So, yeah, on the 15th, uh, if you’re looking down that 15th, you’ll notice how the fairway, which is fine fescue. beautiful fescue grass going on to the um greens which is called creeping bent grass if you want to get all technical that’s it’s just an amazing course the the how they sculpture it I touched on earlier it’s like coastal links you notice how it contours with the fairway it’s undulating and sweeping um it’s stunning visually but it’s also it’s a good challenge from a golfing perspective that’s why it’s just so popular it’s such a destination in the white but also in New Zealand I just It’s just it’s a gem. Absolutely. It’s awesome. It’s a good mixture, too. Good mixture. Really good. Um really good women’s golf as well out here. So, we’re trying to get a lot of lot of the ladies wanting to come and play. Um there is it’s got a strong membership. Got a huge membership for ladies because um we got the nine hole ladies plus obviously the 18 holes. Yeah. Yeah. Cuz a lot of courses are quite lacking quite low numbers. So, it’s very male dominated in a lot of other courses. That’s one unique thing out here. It’s um popular with everyone. Um yeah, just talking more about it. Um most golf courses you’ll see the occasional bunker, you know, the old sand traps. Um but forget that at Tahiki. It’s basically you’ll see it here, but most of the holes are lined with sand. So we call it they’re wasteland bunkers. Uh that’s a unique feature again giving that sort of lynxy sort of feel. You know, like when you see those overseas courses, you see a lot of uh the holes are lined by sand. Um it’s critical to find the fairways or you’re in the sand obviously. Um but yeah, that’s unique. Uh all the other courses around the Waco would just have the odd occasional pothole or sand bunker, but um yeah, it makes it makes it a real challenge and an awesome feature uh visually. If you do hit the sand, um you’ve got is it 30 cm placement? 30 cm placement. So you’re allowed to pick it up and move it if there’s a pebble in the way. You’re not allowed to touch it on the fairway, but yeah. Yeah. Sometimes there’s placement on the moment, which means it’s forgiving. You know, if it’s sitting in a bit of a wet area, you can move it. But there’s these all the little local rules around Tiki uh that make it um make it special. I pulled it. One good thing at uh out here at Tiki is we’re a um we’re proud to be a local sponsor and it’s um it’s got the support of some really good local businesses here in the Waco in Hamilton. Um and so on the back of that, you know, there’s a lot of great uh corporate tournaments and sponsor tournaments which makes it a popular destination and it’s just such a pristine, beautiful, stunning place to be. So, in terms of the corporates and tournaments, um yeah, it’s pretty much at the top of the list, I think, for um for most businesses wanting to come out here. And even at the driving range, you know, they’ve got a um they’ve got a facility there for um yeah, for businesses to get together and do workshops and seminars and conferences. So, yeah, it’s an amazing. So, it’s just so much more than golf. It’s an experience. Uh it’s tyiki is an experience out here. So, yeah. Cool. So, another unique design part of the design principles out here at Tiki is um a lot of the holes are flanked with, you know, we touched on elevated, you know, down the side of the course. It’s been very elevated and that’s crucial part of the design so that for um not just viewing spectators but um for tournaments, you know, for um for filming and showcasing tournaments, it’s perfectly designed um you know, for grandstands and uh spectators and plane spotting as well. So, there’s some really good vantage uh points all up and down all the fairways, nice high banks. Um so yeah that’s a that’s another key feature that uh when they designed this with full tailangi and and the like put all their um thoughts together and I touched on earlier all the natural flora and grasses it’s all been worked in with it. Um so very sustainable design. Well that’s straight. Wasn’t a bad shot. So, um, so just thinking out loud while I did that shot, that wasn’t actually too bad. I was quite happy with that. The ladies will be happy. So, I’ll be able to tell them at club day. But yeah, they have a really active, um, club here for the ladies, the Wahini. Um, so it’s neat to, um, come along and be involved. They’re really welcoming. Um, they’re very, really down to earth because, as Glenn said, they we came from narrows, you know, really neat club. So um the other thing I really like too where I have been involved here we’ve had the chamber of commerce here um really good networking event. So I’ve been to that um also I have come to um foresight bar seminar just a couple weeks ago and they did have it at at the um at the driving range that you’re going to have a look at later. So [Music] yeah, that’s what I want. [Music] Cheers, Ra. Thank you. Awesome. It’s a great day. It’s a good experience there today, eh? Awesome. Fantastic weather. Oh, beautiful weather. Beautiful uh conditions are great. You know, it’s been cold, but you know, a bit of a challenge with the sand, but it’s been good to get out here, talk a bit of business, talk about the great experience that Tiki is, uh, and that it’s just a wonderful destination and a mustsea. And thank you to WA Sheds for having me. Awesome, mate. We’ll look forward to some more videos with Bailey’s and Ra. Absolutely. Catch you guys. Tour outside. And now we’re going into the awesome Bro and we’ll go over here and we’ll get This is my favorite part, the 19th hole. We’ll get something to drink and have some wonderful food at this bro. So, oh, what are the odds? Who we got over here? People from Wet Sheds. Mark again. Good day, mate. Hey, Shane and Jay. Here we go. Um, how’s it going guys? Yeah, fantastic. What have we got on the menu? We got a few tasty looking treats. Get some food into us. Then pop over to the driving range and give us a few tips. Get me swinging a ball, getting a few shots off, you know, looking for maybe a career change later in my life. Yeah, I’m just here to drink a drink a beer, you know. To the to hazy, mate. It’s uh it’s hard to deny. Yeah. So that’s what I’m here for. Yeah, that’s it. I think Wat Sheds built up a little bit of a legendary reputation when we were building sheds here with our after dinner after work refreshments. So, you know, shout out to Paul, Stan, Mike that were on site. RIP to Whiz as well, Jack and Casey was here. So, yeah, we thought come in, see Glenn hard at work and, you know, grab a beer and some tasty treats for lunch. I think their burgers always look fantastic. So, let’s get an order in and then check back and see how it is. All right, so we’ve just seen this wonderful, beautiful crew here from the Wicked. What we’re going to do is go up to the bar and have a uh we’ll have a bit of a nosy up here. It’s only Monday, but you know, you got to do these things for the team. So, we’ll go and get a hazy pale. Okay, we’ll go and order a couple of those for the lads. All right, we’re up at the bar. I believe the order is twoara hazy pale. I I’m not I actually haven’t had one of those. So, um I normally have malagas, but hey, when in Rome, we’ll do the same. Okay. Well, we’ve just finished a fantastic meal in the award-winning Bro. Um thoughts, guys, feedback. I had the lamb shoulder and it was absolutely phenomenal. Beautiful, rich flavors, washed down with a hazy paleo. And you know what? I’m ready for a little nap. Now, sorry, there’s no time for a nap. We’re going to check out the drone range after this, guys. Yeah. Yeah. No, top notch. I I took the healthy options. Caesar salad. You know, I was the good boy, but I’m not regretting it. It’s good. J Shane’s got all the energy at the moment cuz he’s had a salad. Yeah. Lamb shoulder. Excellent. It’s just it’s phenomenal down here in Ti. And you don’t have to be a member. You can just pop on in here and enjoy a phenomenal view and phenomenal food. But where are you going to take us and show where are you going to show off now, Glenn? Well, we’re going to go and look at the driving range. and we were involved associated with the construction of that. Uh we’ll go and see that the amazing facilities over there where people practice. All right, great lunch. So it’s 100 m to get there. And you know when you’re on the golf estate, you may as well act like an estate type fellow. And we’re not talking London estate. We’re talking to Yaki golf estate. So Glenn, onwards and upwards to the driving range. Away we go. Uh we are here outside the practice range, the Duncan and Ebert practice range here at Tahiki. And over to the left here, we’ve got the wonderful practice chipping green, which is an awesome facility. You got a big sand trap there, so you can practice your bunker play as well as chipping around all the undulations around the green, which is it’s challenging, but you need it when you get out there in the real course. So, we’re here. We were involved in this construction. I’ve got Jace here who sold the concept. Hey Jace, how’s it going mate? Very good sir. Very good. And we’ve also behind us here more team members over here. We’ve got Shane who um project managed the construction and Mark who’s one of the builders that was involved in the construction of the fantastic practice facility. Welcome to the wonderful world sheds my friends. I’m here with Shane. Hey. How are you? I’m great. We’re in the heartland of the mighty W Catau at Tekki Golf Estate, Glenn’s second home. And we’re here to check out the Duncan and Ebit practice range. This is a phenomenal build. Uh we worked on this over a number of years. It’s been finished for a little while. Shout out Craig Main Smith, the chairman at the time, and then Matt Boyd, his successor. Great guys to work in through with the design and that. Um before we get inside, couple of initial thoughts on this building. Shane. Well, first of all, whenever I walk into Teiki, I always feel a I don’t know, it just feels it’s a nice feeling. I feel relaxed, but I also feel excited. Some good memories come floating back of this building. And among the others, uh this one particular, we got a couple of two-tone walls. We’ve got wraparound eaves. We’ve got this beautiful garden. It just really It’s all come together beautifully, hasn’t it? Yeah, this one is phenomenal. This is a great It’s a testament to the design work um that came through here. that in design, the engineering, shout out to our guys, Northern Consulting Engineers. They did this. They worked through the design. They saw what wanted to be achieved and then they made it happen. Massive shout out to the guys on site though. We had Paul, Stan, Wesley, Kale, Mike, Jack, and definitely Mark the builder all out here working through all weather conditions to make this happen on what could be quite is definitely not our normal run-of-the-mill shed. So, why don’t we go inside and have a look at some of the detail that’s been coming through that make this shed pop off. So, probably first feature is this breezeway speaks to the breezeway on the main golf club there. Uh, and as you were saying, we’ve stepped out this cladding. So, Cahoo cladding, color steel, New Zealand made, that’s what you got to keep this great country running on. But a little step out from the black down into the gray. So, how did you achieve that one, Shane? Uh we just put a bit of cavity batten in behind the gray to try and step it out similar to what was on the clubhouse. So they’ve got concrete panels on the clubhouse with a black top. We tried to mimic that same thing. Uh and I think it looks good. What do you think? I think it looks great. Great sheds done right. And that’s what we’ve been doing here. Why don’t we have a sip inside the conference facility? You got beautiful toilet facilities in there. So they look phenomenal in the pro shop. But you come into here and this is great. Follow me in. And we’ve got this amazing meeting conference room. I know PKF, our accountants recently had their ladies day out here. So, they’re all enjoying it. We’ve got the bar fridge fully catered in here. Meeting rooms. We can talk some KPIs. You know, sell more sheds. That’s my favorite KPI. Baronic Thomas Glenn, you can be listening in on that one. Um, but inside the fit out, I know the ZB Homes guys were helping out with that. What do you think, Shane? I think you wouldn’t know you’re in a shed right now. It’s all been covered up beautifully. We’ve got some massive structural steel in behind these walls, but you wouldn’t know it. They’ve just boxed all around. They’ve made this beautiful countertop, and it looks like a corporate office. Looks great. Well, maybe not a corporate office. It looks like a looks pretty corporate to me. Yeah, I’ll roll with that. That’s it. I’m looking, you know, this is looking high-end corporate. Uh, which looks great. And that sort of speaks to the clientele that are out there. We’re happy to deal with it um and produce this phenomenal facility. But then we walk out this level entryway and who have we got out here working hard, hardly working hard to tell the difference. We have Glenn the golfer and Mark the Builder and superb golf from Mark in his steel caps here. But Glenn, yeah, mate, obviously you love it here at Tei Golf State. You’ve done the tours. You’ve shown it around. You’re a proud member of it here. But what do you think of this from a golfer’s perspective, this facility? It’s magnificent, mate. Uh this practice facility here. Um Oh, I’ll grab that. Yeah. No, it’s wonderful. Um set up to practice and sharpen up your iron play. Uh not so much the um there’s notes here saying aim down the distant markers. And they don’t really encourage you to pull out the drivers because we’ve got the 18th over over here for health and safety reasons. But no, it’s wonderful. got nice sights on the distances so you can practice all your different go through your irons from your pitching right up to your four iron. Um I I love the way that this facility is all connected here this conference/ business room. Uh you can look out uh you can it’s got a good connection for people that are practicing. So it’s wonderful. Uh and this is just part of it of course as we talked about. You got the chipping green just over there, which is awesome. And that gets you um gets you tuned up for the for the undulations and the challenges when you’re out there on the real course. Awesome. Great feedback from a great golfer there, Glenn. Uh in terms of when we’re building this shed, Mark, we’ll often can lever out an eve, but there’s a rather large cantal levering going on here to give room for cover for the golfers underneath from all the elements. But when you were building this shed, anything particular going on that you noted and remember? Well, yeah, it was mainly that that with these big caner levers. So, from behind me, we have the legs coming up and then we’ve can levered it at all forward to create this big opening. We used inline C sections on this build which went together really well, but also given this really nice streamline look of the whole building. Uh we did a few different things on here. Different flashings around the window, different flashing along the top to give some more seamless uh looks to the whole place. But yeah, when we were building it, it was sort of interesting envisioning how it was going to come out. But now that it’s all finished, smacking a few balls here, it’s just blowing my mind at how well it’s all turned out with the product. So now I’m really excited, really happy about this build and how it’s come up. Great seeing the caroo cladding up on the walls. We don’t use that as regularly as say coral or t- rib, but is a really beautiful product to work with and now to look at. It’s really nice. So, they’re really excited about it. Looking forward to putting the mic down and getting back to hitting a few more balls. Yeah, as Mark was saying with this um extended roof or e you want to call it, but this extended roof is fantastic. This has been carefully uh designed and orientated facing south. So, we’ve got nice shade cover. It’s lovely. It’s a really hot day. Even though it’s autumn, it’s a very hot day out there in that sunshine. So, visually, it’s really attractive to play golf shots cuz you can see you’ve got clarity with the balls out there in the sunshine, but we’re covered. It’s shaded. It’s actually really comfortable uh practicing here. So, carefully designed and thought out. All right. Welcome back to the wonderful world of Wakadoo sheds. We’ve been doing the tour of the course today and what’s so awesome out here in Tiki and also some of the facilities. We’ve just come from the practice range. We’re at the green keeper shed which is we’re proud to be associated with this construction. We’ll go inside and talk to the head greener the the man on the spot. This is Jason Lang. Good day Jace. Hey. How are you? Good to see you mate. Cheers. Great facility. fantastic facility this um all brought about by Wetto Sheds. Um as you know um they came in here and basically just said to me uh what would I want? Yep. Uh and we just went from there. Uh even down to I think I might have said this before, but even down to the where do I want the windows and doors and how do we want it all to operate and work out. So um with the help of the White Shed people, they came in and and did it. It’s just fantastic. Brilliant. Awesome. Awesome. And um if we want to talk the course um obviously you’ve had some recent cing uh bit of bit of work going on there. That’s your remedial yearly stuff I think is it? Is that what you call? Yeah, we do renovations twice a year and we we we normally do uh greens, te’s surrounds and we do nine holes of the fairways. Y um and currently I’m about 2 days behind to where I’d like to be, but uh 2 days time I think I’ll be pretty happy to where quickly do the greens get back to how sensational they normally are, which is brutal and fast. I normally I I pride I we’ve had a bit of an issue um last week with the rain, but normally pride myself on having them back within 10 days. Oh wow. Um and back to speed as well, but we’re we’re going to be a little bit behind on that just because of the rain. It was quite good out there today. You could um trust yourself thumping the ball. Yeah, as the sand sort of pulls it up. There’s a little bit of a back stop. So, that was quite cool. That’s a real change when you normally play out here. But it’s a great They’re great greens. They’re such a good challenge. They’re undulating and they’re fast. Uh which, you know, good good challenge for all golfers of all levels. Uh which is really cool. So, um do you want to talk about some of the facilities or or your equipment? You’ve got an array of um Yeah. Well, if you have a pan around the shed here, we we are predominantly John Deere. uh Brent are also part of that with the John Deere equipment. Um we also run a few other bits and pieces from other companies uh just because that they you know there are certain pieces of equipment that you need that are that you can’t just have it from the one one equipment company. So we we run basically 90% of it is John Deere equipment as you can see. Well most of it’s out actually cuz it’s uh it’s a working day. It’s a working day today. Um and as I said I haven’t said it but this is where we make all golfers dreams come true. This is the heart and soul of Tiki Golf Estate where all we make all your dreams come true as a golfer where we produce you booties, eagles, bogeies, lost balls, water balls, bad language. We make it all happen here. This is where the golf starts. That’s part of the experience. So yeah, that’s awesome. What’s your What’s the numbers here that make up your team to make this happen? To make the dreams come true out place? To make the dreams come true out here? We we typically run nine nine staff full-time staff here. Wow. Um, currently I’m at 8. So, uh, if you hear anybody out there, um, we are looking and we’ll be looking, um, over the next few months. Yeah. To to make sure we can find somebody that will fit into the team environment here. Uh, you just missed out last week. We had our sports day here. So, I run a few things differently here and um, so we put down a hangy and had a sports day where we played golf. Cool. U, bit of target shooting, archery, uh, disc golf. uh just helps with the camaraderie with the whole team environment that we we’re trying to have here as well. So yeah, so that’s a good pitch for the uh for any prospective person that wants to come in into the team. What do they have to be a golfer as such or love the great outdoors and beer? You just have to like the outdoors because you know our job is to rain, hail, snow. Uh we got to be out there because the golfer comes regardless. Yes. But the times you think no golfers are coming here they are. They’re here. That’s true. And today’s just a spectacular day. In seasonal wise, what do in terms of the challenge of keeping the course amazing? Is there a tough season and an easy season or one that you would enjoy in your roles? Uh that that every se we have all four seasons and they come pretty quickly in New Zealand. But so every season is is different. They all have their challenges. You know, we’ll have when the humidity comes, there’s chances of diseases that will pop up everywhere and then there’s then there’s the summertime when there’s foot traffic everywhere. you know, my grass doesn’t like a lot of foot traffic. Um, so there’s all those sorts of drums that just keep rolling on every time the season changes. And we’ve had a particularly dry summer. So that must have been uh taking its toll. A lot of watering. A lot of watering. Yeah. Yeah. We actually got up over our um what we the most I’ve actually put on um in the what 3 years that we’ve been here. Um we were pumping out about uh 1.4 million liters a day. Uh I’m out on the course. So um which is up there. Um but thankfully we do have some nice resource consent um here at Taki Golf Estate where we can afford to put all that out there and keep the place looking green. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Fantastic. And I know you are a golfer as such. Um did you get out there to play much or you just too busy working? No. Oh actually I got out there yesterday had a had a bat around with the family. So that that was really good. It was actually it’s quite good to play your golf course as we were evolving as well. Yeah. Uh because when we open, you know, we’re still growing in and we’re we’re almost down to fighting height, so we can uh we’ll be right up there with the big boys. Okay. Uh once we get into the next spring season coming along. So, fantastic. Awesome. Awesome. So, Jason, where did you where did it all start? What’s your background? Well, my background is is always been around golf. Um dad played, still plays actually, and so got into the golf through that part of it. Yeah. Um, and then I was mowing greens at my own golf club. Uh, 12 to 13, hand mowing in the mornings, mow those greens, come out of it, and then, uh, finally got a an opportunity to do my time at Wak. So, I was there for about 9 years at Wak um, learning the trade down there. That’s a beautiful course one of my favorites. Then I moved from there and went to uh, Hooker Lodge where it just allowed me to have a little bit more time to play golf. Um, so I was there at Hooker Lodge for a little while, then moved to the US and my wife says to me, “Why don’t you turn pro?” I said, “Are you kidding? This is the best of the best in this in the world.” So anyway, I tried and I did. And so I played professional golf in the US. Uh, last one was in 2007 over there. Yeah. to um started off down in the bottom ranks uh where you play on the mini tours and you build your way up until you until they called my name out on the PGA tour. PGA tour. PJ tour. I’m a I’m an avid golfer. So I that just that’s amazing. That would be incredible. And I watched those courses week to week on the PGA tour and they are such spectacular courses. Did you you obviously rub shoulders with some pretty uh famous dudes? Well, you who did you beat? Well, put it this way. Uh it was great just to be out there uh with the big boys, you know, because because as as anyone who plays golf knows that they are the best of the best and just to be out there and competing against them and with them was just fantastic. Like, you know, I grew up playing for New Zealand as well. So, whenever we traveled the world, you got to meet other amateur golfers and then as we’ve grown up, they turned pro as well. And then we met again in the US um playing golf over there. Fantastic. So yeah, unbelievable. So you would have been playing Did you play the players champs and masters and all those? Um did you get into a few of those? No, but I did I did work a couple of them. So, um, after I fell back into the, uh, building industry, um, cuz I let you know that, um, my wife and I, we decided that we probably should grow up at some stage. And so, we decided to have a family and so the the pro golfing took a big back seat and then had got back into the basically just design and building of um, greens and TE’s and fairways and stuff all over the US. Yeah. Uh and then that that sort of got me back into the into the green keeping world. Um just traveling around doing that overseas. Um and then uh yeah, just our son came along. So we moved back to New Zealand. Fantastic. All right. So this is more than just a greener shed. Eh, there’s uh you’ve got more going on down here, Jason. You want to just uh should we have a walk and talk? Show us through, mate. Come on down. Come on down. I also just want to uh introduce you to our uh recycled wall here. It’s it’s it’s a wall with memorabilia on it. Oh, that’s awesome. Um it’s a bunch of guys that have uh been with me uh through the build and then as we’re and most are still here as well. But that just is little things that they’ve left behind. Uh you can see a coat hanger up there in the frame. That was one of my guys’ aerials on his car. So we took that off. Um, and that’s just what they left. Uh, obviously the hat up the top there, the boys think that’s uh me uh for some unknown reason. But anyway, come through. Come through. Oh, that’s cool. Thank you. Oh, come through. This is the lunchroom. Staff room. Lunch room. Staff room. Uh, cool. TV’s on obviously cuz we had the masters was on today. So, we had to watch a little bit of the masters on. Um, so this is the lunchroom, meeting room. Uh, come through to this doorway. We have the, uh, locker room. Right. Locker room. Um, toilet toilet showers. Few nicknames here going on. As you can see, rude ones. Should we not fool them all? We got the fine man, the Hollywood, the funny bone, and the muscles. Excellent. And the W. That’s cool. We like to say these are call signs from when we use our radios, right? Oh, brilliant. Like Top Gun Maverick. You can clean up here. You got a bathroom facility. Bathroom facility. Then we got laundry out here. Um I like my my guys to just look pretty sharp all the time. Um and then come on upstairs. Sweet. Yeah, it’s a bit warm up here. Um this is cool. But this is just the office. Uh but my main office really is um outside. Yes, of course. But this is sometimes where you have to be at times to nice get everything done. You got a couple of special bags right there. Yeah. Well, Danny Lee and and Rod Pampling or Pampling Rod. I I worked for Danny when I got out of the construction business in the US for and I worked for Danny for about 3 years. Yeah. And then um Rod for for off and on and um my wife has thrown them out. Unbelievable. Well, he’s doing very well. He’s on the live tour now, I think, isn’t he? Yes, he is. Yeah, he’s he’s done an exceptional well. Went a couple of times on the PGA, I think, didn’t at least once. Yep. Oh, cool. So, yeah, this is the office in the corner is a dedicated irrigation computer. Nobody touches that but two people. Um, just that’s something when we need it during the summertime, that can’t go down at all. So, is that is it all program is that programmed time a lot time wise on when the sprinkers go off or excuse my ignorance, but I’m just trying to understand is that quite some sophisticated software going on here? It it it it’s it’s the it’s the latest and greatest for um uh this particular model at the moment. Sirrus Pro. Um it does it does operate all 1181 heads that we’ve got out there. Um so it needs to be a pretty nice Yeah. system to to keep everything running at certain times and finishing at certain times because you know we’ve got to come in and then start working and then the golfers have got to come in. So yeah, there’s a bit of logistics. Oh, this is awesome. Oh, fantastic. Thanks for the tour. Yeah, you’re welcome. Yeah. Yeah. No. Cool. Yeah. Well, hey, look, thanks very much, Jason. I really appreciate the tour of the green keeper shed and your offices and all the bits and pieces and to understand who you are and your background. It’s been really fascinating and interesting and uh we thank you for our association working with us and your tour today. Um can’t wait to get back out and play more golf. But cheers, mate. No, you’re welcome. And um yeah, by all means, come back and see us. Thanks, mate. Cheers. Cheers. So, as Jason was just talking to us about, one of the awesome things with this golf course is that they have uh the right to irrigate, but they also have huge retention ponds to save as much water as they can to be able to pump that back out onto the greens and keep it all looking beautiful and green. And this is actually where our journey started with Yato Sheds was. Behind us is the pump house. So in here it has a massive pump engine and this works and pumps the whole irrigation system. He was saying something like 1,500 plus separate irrigated heads, a computer that just runs that and then this beautiful little shed we built out here. So, this one’s just quite little for what we do, but as you’ve seen today, we can just build you a nice little pump house. We can build you a big green keeper shed or we can build you a state-of-the-art facility for training your golfers and whacking golf balls and having a good time. So, absolutely phenomenal. We’re going to pop out the front and say our goodbye. So, it’s been awesome having you along. Let’s go and do that. All right, guys. Hey, it’s been an awesome day here. We’ve had the tour of the course looking at all the various holes and the challenges and the amazing design principles of Tiki. Uh we’ve seen the facilities. Uh we’ve talked to Jason Lang, you know, the green keeper and the GM Scott. Uh we’ve had an awesome day here today. As you can see, we’re proud sponsors. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time here today and we’ll continue our proud association. Yep. It has been absolutely phenomenal. Cool. coming in getting to see a bit of behind the scenes what goes into keeping a golf course like this humming and then that food absolutely fantastic brilliant so as Glenn says really proud to have built all this if you want something a white cat shed of your own make sure you jump on to our Facebook page web page all of those things and get in contact you can come and meet Glenn Yep or or the whole team Thomas or Bronnik uh we’re passionate about We love what we’re doing.
