What makes the EGOS Putting System different from every other green reading method? In this exclusive Q&A, John Evans sits down with inventor Andrew Walters to answer the most common questions about EGOS – the Expert Green Reading Operating System.
You’ll learn why EGOS works on every putt, how to read right-to-left break using the angle/gap created by gravity, how to avoid bad reads, and why calibration is the secret to perfect aim lines.
We cover eye alignment, why using the ball as a reference is a mistake, how to handle double-breaking putts, and more.
This is not theory — it’s a practical system built on geometry, gravity, and calibration. Watch and learn why EGOS could be the breakthrough your putting game needs.

This angle, this gap is everything. It’s the reason this green reading method works on every single putt. It’s called Egos, expert green reading operating system, and it uses slope and gravity to give you an aiming point that is absolutely spot-on for every single putt. Not roughly, but exactly. Today we’re joined by Andrew Walters who created the ego system and we’re going to cover not the minutia, the details. I’ve done those in other video, but we’re going to answer your questions about this green reading operating system. It’s obvious that I’m standing on some slope here and that gravity creates this angle between the range pole which is perpendicular to the slope and the plum line which is perpendicular to gravity. If this range pole and I were standing on a flat surface, the plumb bob would hang there. But because of gravity, it hangs here. And I’ve done lots of videos on the channel. I’ll put the links to them in the video description that show you how to use your body, your feet, your spine, and your eyes to create this range pole and line up on that so that this gap, this angle appears right in front of your face and shows you where to aim exactly on every putt. But what I want to do today, you’ve had a lot of questions to those videos and so I got Andrew Walters who came up with this idea, invented this system to come and we’re going to answer those questions with a Q&A type video. Let’s go. So Andy, I have a lot of people ask me about which eye should they use. They’re not sure they’re using the correct eye. Can you talk about that? Sure. When taking your stance, your ego stance, you are simulating your spine with this range pull. So you need to get the eye on the range pole, too. The dominant eye on the range pole. So rotate your head. And I personally close my right eye so my left eye is dominant. And I take a read and put it on the range pole. And this movement becomes automatic and precise with practice. and it never really becomes a problem doing it on and on again. Now, if you want to use your right eye, you could do the same thing, but I recommend closing the left eye. Put get memorizing that head rotation and then taking Andy, I get a lot of people who are right eye and right hand dominant saying they can see right to left break, but when the break is left to right, they miss it. Can you talk about that and why it is? and how to correct it. Okay. Yes. Yes, John, I can answer that. No problem. As you take your stance, you get your spine equivalent to the pole, which is naturally by just spreading your feet. And then you get that eye properly, which we just discussed. And you take a read. And when you take a read, this is what I see. Left, I mean a right to left. Right? Now, if I came in here and I tilted my spine like this or like this, or if I tilted my head like this or this, I’m going to shoot a different read than what I just showed you right here. And it’s going to be with the putter in there closer to the cup like this. And whatever way it is, it’s going to be wrong. So, it’s very important that you get in proper stance, get your get your spine parallel with the range ball and then take the read and that’ll get rid of any right to left, left to right problems. Now, let’s just talk a little bit about the left to right. Let’s say the hole is over there and I come over here to take a read. Get everything correct and everything. I take a read. Well, I’m going to see just the opposite over here. Right here with the putter going over on the left side of the cup. Break is always from the shaft to the cup. All right. Now, if I’m over here and I’m tilting my head this way, the whole torso this way, the whole torso this way. Then what I’m going to get when I’m taking these is not going to be the correct one which I just showed you, but it’s going to be a lesser angle gap, both of which are wrong. So hopefully that helps out with that. And that issue sometimes comes up because people line up the lower end of their putter shaft on the straight line between themselves and the hole, but then they turn their head to follow the putter shaft or tilt their head to follow the putter shaft. Here’s a picture of Charlie Hoffman doing something very similar to that with his head tilt. The third question that comes up a lot is, “I just want to aim at my angle gap read.” In other words, roll the ball at the first TE and hit it hard. John, can you address that as being kind of silly? That will never work. So, we’ve got a 10-ft putt set up here, and I’ve done in other videos all the ins and outs of calibrating for speed and for the speed at which you like to roll putts. But in this instance, if I roll it at that first tee and roll it hard, I’ve got to hit that ball firm enough to go 25 or 30 feet past the hole on a 10-footer. That’s foolish. We don’t want to do that. So, you calibrate based on the speed that you like to roll putts. And in this instance, the start line represented by this orange line is three gaps outside. First graph is what I read. The third gra gap is what I calibrated in warm-up. That’s where you roll the ball. And it’s always somewhere between three and five gaps depending on the speed of the greens for that course that day. This is probably a really good time to talk about calibration and what we see when we’re calibrating. So, I’ve got a 10-ft putt set up here. This red line represents the straight line to the hole. This is the gap that I read. I did calibration and it’s a two, three gap day. So, I lined up along this orange string at that third T, which is the third gap. So, let’s go at that third T and see what happens. Andy, I get a lot of questions about double breaking putts and how you adjust for that and what you see when you’re looking at a double breaking putt. Can you answer that? Sure, John. Here we go with a double breaking putt. But it all starts with assuming you got the same slope all the way as you did your calibration cycle. So I take my first read right here. We got three gap greens today. So I take my read and it runs through that second set of T’s just outside the hole. And that’s my gap read. Because it’s a three gap day. I go two more gaps of the same size. And that’s my read immediately. See how quick that was? I got an aim right now based on the calibration and everything. My read went through where the first orange tea is and I add I do visually I do one, two, three gaps of the same size. And it’s just that quick. I have my start line. No wasting time. Now a double breaker. Long putt. I come up here. I do it. Take another read. and I get the same angle gap that I had got back there. I know it’s going to the hole the same constant. All right, let’s say I take my read right here. My end point is that orange and I come here and I take a read and I take a read and I and I go right there and and the shaft splits the cup. It’s just leveled ground right here. It went from right there to there. So, I’ve got to adjust my aim from back there. So, I come over to the hole quickly take another ball and I go like this and all of a sudden the ball’s the same as I got here. Technically, that’s what I I can’t aim there because it quits breaking right in here. So, I’m coming right here at the 13 a little inside. So, two gaps instead of three. And that’s how you read a double breaking putt. Andy, I get a lot of questions about the second object. Now, we know the first object is the hole and then the second object should be on a straight line from the hole to my ball and about three or four feet in front of me. But a lot of people ask, “Oh, I’m really struggling to find that second object. I just can’t find a spot that’s exactly on that line in the right position.” What do you do in that instance? All right, John. When you are taking a read, as soon as you walk in, you start to draw that imaginary red line with your eye. Red line right here from the cup. Don’t waste any time. Just start to run. You’re already in stance and automatically your head tilts a little bit like this and you’re ready to go. So you run looking for that second option. Okay, I find one. I put my cover up and that’s the cup is somewhere in here. Well, the cup needs to be next to the fingers because that’s what was done in calibration. So what do I do about that? Go start over again, find a second object. I could, but since I’ve already run the line, I just take the putter and run it down the line a little bit more and just use the line instead of a real second option. And then I see where the cup’s right next to my fingers. That’s perfect. Now I go one, two, three gaps. Boom. I got my aim line, which is exactly where that string is. Now that we covered finding the second object, once you become expert at this and you go really fast and really quick is I’ve started running my line already and I’m not really even looking for a second option anymore. I’m just going to put the lower shaft right on that imaginary line and look up and then make adjustments if I need to get my finger. That’s more the expert level. And what I what I recommend though is training by finding the second object. And a lot of times the second object will be in the perfect position anyway. I’ll just look and go, “Oh, there it is. Perfect.” Because I know the positions for different lengths of putt because I do it all. Andy, another question I get asked a lot is I’ve got a five or sixfooter and I really struggle to find that the line on that shorter or second object on that line. So, I do everything right, but I’m still not getting the right read. The only thing I change is I back up behind the ball, use the hole as my first object and the ball as my second object, but I get a bad read. Why is that? What do I need to do differently? John, I had the same issue with a disciple who’s very good at it. And he told me he missed this putt right here and that my green reist. And I said, “Well, you did something wrong because it’s based on gravity. Gravity always works.” He says, “No, I didn’t do anything wrong.” I said, “Well, come on. Show me what you did.” So, this is what he showed me. He gets right here. There’s his ball and it goes like this and he takes a read like this. And I immediately look at it. Well, that’s what you did wrong. He said, “What? You’re not standing where the ball rolls. Obviously, slope changes up there and you’re not going to get that. If you got up here, you would had way better chance of getting.” So, why on earth would you do that? He says, “Well, I modified your system a little bit, Andy. I got in there and I started running the line right through the ball right into my belt. I said, “Don’t do that. I don’t teach that. An e ghost is not like Adam bombs or close to good enough. You’ve got to do it for the letter as all the minutia says.” And then if there’s problems, we can correct all that. We can correct pilot error by watching John’s video or rereading my books or call us for a zoom or meet us on the practice and we’ll correct it just like I corrected my buddy right John a common question can I use foot feeling with egos use them together well you can but you shouldn’t because it’s a complete and total distraction and it takes up time, which is part of the beauty of this system is it’s very quick and fast green reads. Listen, I’ve taught aim point true reads certified to teach those and they both use foot feeling. When I first started using Egos, I would test my reads against aim point and tour reads, and I was getting reads that were always equally and often more accurate, a whole lot less time, and no stomping around the green. Why would I go walking around trying to feel with my feet, which might feel different on a day if I ate a bad breakfast burrito or something? Why not just walk up, set up like a range pole, take a reading that’s based on gravity, science, and math, pick a start line, and roll the ball. It’s faster. It’s more accurate, and I don’t need to confuse myself with some other method. This works. Let me throw something in here, John. When I get up to this putt right here, or I walk up to the putt, I says, “Man, this putt’s got a lot of left break.” I see that, you know, this gonna be amazing. And then I take a read and it shows a straight putt. An ego read shows a straight putt. Which one do I believe? My staring or ego read? Well, guess what? I don’t even look anymore. I don’t stare. I don’t look if there’s a mountain over there or a river over here. I don’t even want those optical illusions in my mind because over and over again, if I don’t putt this putt straight, I’m going to miss it. You’re right. If I simply use the ego system and trust it, I don’t get distracted by all those optical illusions that the greenskeeper and the course designer put in to fool me and cause me to miss putts. Andy, I sometimes get a lot of questions about the speed of the greens and the stamp. Tell me how that comes into effect when we’re using ego screen reading method. All righty. So basically the step it’s a lot like well it’s a distraction as well because when you get in three whatever it is you lower the force for a 10ft cut and you do it uh proportionally throughout the grains. You add something for uphill something downhill. All those covered in other one videos. So why where is there place for knowing the step? It’s not a number that is is needed whatsoever. There’s just no relevance for it whatsoever to compare a stamp. Well, a step a step of 11 means five gap brains or whatever. Why bother? Just any more than you would bother staring at a butt or foot peeling. It’s all just a distraction. Andy, you told me what I absolutely believe is true. And that’s the number one rule of marketing golf products, which is if there’s not a pro on the tour using it on Sunday and he’s not near the top of the leaderboard, people think it doesn’t work. So that begs the question, why aren’t any PGA Tour pros on TV noticeably using the Ego screen reading system? Well, I’ve got a whole prelude on why there are no tour pros using the system right now to give an explanation that basically is just centuries of brainwashing and bias but regardless of that we got Bryson who has mathematical proclivity and once he gets exposed to ego he’s going to take to it like a fish to water there’s no doubt about that and once he goes out there and starts making cuts to the Lord on tour. All the tours are going to follow because if they don’t, they’ll be conceding an advantage. That’s why Andy puts a guarantee in his book that if you have a tour pro using this system and their caddy using this system with a putting coach that he will guarantee they’ll have less than 27 putts per round over the course of a golf season. Nobody has ever done that well. And that’s how accurate this green reading system is when you refine it out and eliminate operator error or pilot error because gravity is never going to change. Math is never going to change. And it operates very simply on the fact of 10th grade geometry and gravity. Andy, thanks for coming out and helping with this Q&A on the expert green reading operating system. Folks, if you want to check it out more, I’ve got a list of videos put together in a playlist on this screen reading operating system. Cover all the details and the minutia. 1. Apologies for the audio quality in a few spots. Had a microphone issue and since Andy Walters travelled across country to record this, couldn't re-record it. 👇 What’s your biggest frustration with reading greens?

  2. John, I have the EGOS putter and have read both books. The instructions say to place your hand holding the putter on the same level as object one. When I do that on shorter putts, I cannot see the bottom of the shaft on the line from my ball to the hole. Maybe a better way to explain the problem is this: the length of the shaft between the grip and the hosel is too long to place the hosel on object two and the bottom of the grip on the level of object one. My EGOS is a 33 inch putter. I am trying to read 7 to 8 foot putts. It is challenging me. If I place the hosel on an object on the line to the hole that I can see, without altering my stance or head position, then my fingers at the and grip bottom are way above object one.

  3. I have been using this system since you first posted, Speed is the key to this system in my opinion. Also if you play on slow greens I found that it dont break as much as I see. Again I think this is where speed is important. The one issue I have occasionally is when I turn my head to line up my dominant eye sometimes i get a miss read as maybe i have move the putter slightly of the line.. but overall I can say Im impressed and got my putts down to 30 / 31 per round. 3 putts do happen but not nearly as much, like the odd time i get the speed wrong or .. (which drives me nuts) when I fat the putter.

  4. I find it really hard to stand at the ball and be precise at finding a line to the hole as i have no idea where the ball is when i stand over it. if i see the line from behind and try to pick a point then when i move to the ball it doesnt match up to my hands and hozzle. I havent been bale to use this method for this reason
