We had a soggy Saturday and a slow Sunday, but there was a flurry of activity on the LowcoSports scene Friday night, with a full slate of soccer, baseball, and softball on tap across the area, including a handful of Lowco-on-Lowco showdowns.
The May River Sharks and Hilton Head Seahawks squared off on the soccer pitch Friday night to open Region 7-4A play, and it was a great night to swim with the Sharks.
Over in The Nest, the visiting Sharks got two goals from Anderson University-bound senior Zoe Stevenson and freshman keeper Lexie Lagan limited Hilton Head to a single goal as May River escaped with a 2-1 win over the Seahawks to keep the momentum going into a key matchup at home against James Island on Tuesday.
And the May River boys made it a sweep for the Sharks with a 3-2 win in The Tank, as Timmy O’Gorman scored the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute and Jacob Madeiros added his second goal of the night in the 63rd. The Seahawks pulled one back with six minutes to play, but May River keeper Andres Seijas Garcia didn’t concede the equalizer, giving the Sharks the result.
Both Bluffton Bobcats teams cruised in their region openers at home against Colleton County, with the girls winning 9-0 with four goals from Sierra Gies and a hat trick from EmmaKate McMahon, while the boys blanked the Cougars 6-nil to improve to 4-0. Josh Fox’s squad has yet to allow a goal in the run of play.
In other area soccer results Friday, Beaufort High’s boys held off John Paul the 2nd for a 1-nil win, Hampton County’s boys edged Battery Creek 3-2 with a brace from Chris Terry and a goal and an assist from David Cox, and Miguel Ruiz scored a hat trick as the Whale Branch boys beat Bamberg-Ehrhardt 5-4 in overtime.
And Beaufort High’s girls had a great weekend at the Crescent Cup in Columbia, going 4-0 with wins over Westside, Gilbert, White Knoll and Providence Athletic Club. Selena Duncan scored six of the Eagles’ 10 goals and Beaufort recorded two shutouts in four games. Good stuff.
Friday was also a big night on the diamonds in the Lowco, including rivalry night on The Farm with Colleton Prep visiting rival Patrick Henry. The Warhawks rolled to a 16-0 rout on the softball diamond, as Sydney Stivender went 3-for-4 with two homers and struck out 10 in a three-hit shutout, but Hugh Fairey racked up nine strikeouts in a complete game and Bryton Peeples and Nathan Corley each drove in two runs as the Patriots pulled away for an 11-1 win on the baseball diamond.
Our friends at Beaufort’s Own were on hand for a doubleheader at Bluffton High School on Friday, where the host Bobcats and the Beaufort Eagles both took on McIntosh County Academy from Georgia, and both of the Lowco squads took care of business.
Thomas Gilmore struck out seven and allowed just two hits over 5 ⅓ innings and Ryan Goll and Gavin Carrick had big days at the plate to power the Bobcats to a 10-0 win before the Eagles beat up on the Buccaneers in a 14-0 rout. Hudson Mullen piled up 13 strikeouts in a five-inning one-hitter and drove in four runs for Beaufort.
The baseball teams from Hilton Head Christian Academy and John Paul the 2nd also picked up hard-fought wins, as Zane Wilson threw 6 ⅓ strong innings and Roman Colella was 2-for-3 with an RBI in a HHCA’s 3-1 win over Holy Innocents, and JPII’s Garrett Heathcott and Logan Cotter combined to shut down Battery Creek while Talon Putnam was 2-for-2 with an RBI triple in a 3-2 win.
Kylie Rast had another dominant effort in the circle for Beaufort softball on Friday, striking out 11 Bluffton Bobcats in a five-inning one-hitter as the Eagles rolled to a 10-0 win, while Battery Creek rallied past Hilton Head for a 10-4 win with three hits apiece from Haley Maroney and Mia Israel, Bailey Cox smacked a go-ahead RBI triple to push Colleton County past Barnwell, and Hampton County routed Whale Branch.
It was a rough weekend for the USCB Sand Sharks, as the baseball team was swept in a three-game set by visiting Georgia College and the softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at USC Aiken on Sunday. Sand Sharks will try to salvage the series finale today.
