Alan McLean credits his close friend Walter Keating Jr. for a tip that changed his game and his mindset. A few small tweaks with his putter and the next thing you know, everything is going in. His confidence soars. He can see the ball going in the hole, has a calmness on the inside, his self-talk changes, and he feels like he is going to be successful… Next thing you know, he is the Champion of the Canadian Tour (PGA Tour Canada) Jamieson WFCU Windsor Roseland Charity Classic.
It’s been a tough few years for the 41-year-old where his game has been good but not good enough and I can tell from our discussion he has been tattered by this game we call golf. This is about his success story and how it all came together from the mental side.
For Alan, it is all about confidence. How to get there seems elusive to him but during the Windsor event he was able to hose all his previous doubts and “will” the ball into the hole. It almost seemed magical with a touch of luck as I listen to him describe his success.
More importantly, he had the best game that week and displayed the determination and grit to finish on top.
Although describing the mindset and feeling that went along with his recent success is not easy, Alan describes the frame of mind so familiar to this site. The concepts are real and effective in crowning champions.
Alan’s perspective on expectations was interesting. In the end, Alan prefers to keep expectations internal which he believes to be an important contributor to his success. Outward discussions of expectations are killer for him to maintain his confident state of mind.
Perception is reality and all players have a personal perspective on golf psychology success. Have a listen to my interview with Alan McLean as he talks about the mindset that put him into the Canadian Tour winners circle.
