About this video: In this video Top 100 Golf Instructor, Jason Birnbaum, shows us a simple change to your setup that can make the golf swing so much easier. The simple fact is that if you’re not setting up to the golf ball properly, you’re having to make all types of compensations that make your golf swing less repeatable. So if you’re looking to make your golf game more consistent, simplifying your golf swing (starting with the proper setup) is the way to get there. Try this easy little setup change next time you practice your golf swing and see how much it helps your own ball striking ability!
you see how when this handle went down the wrist went more extended but the more it comes up the flatter it’s going to be so I’m going to set up my Norm then I’m just going to raise that handle a bit you got it much much better it’s part of your pre-shot routine right before you take it back you’re just raising it up a little bit pointing the belt buckle chest high if you’re starting from here and here it’s like uh just too much going on to try to Too Much twisting and torquing going on to try to get it and with the speed of a longer Club especially a driver which you said you hook more yeah it’s going to be tough to get that out of there all right wow I just had what might be the best lesson I’ve ever had and in fact I so shocked at how a little little change dramatically changed and improved my ball striking I was just in there with Jason Burnal who’s one of the best young instructors in America and we really looked at those hack motion numbers and you won’t believe what we found I think a lot of you may be struggling with the same thing so hopefully this helps you guys as much as it helped me check out this lesson all right Frank your Miss is a little bit to the left right and you can see that when you’re hitting the ball the club face is closed yeah so it impact when it’s closed that means the ball’s going to start left and it’s going to keep going that way and the longer the club in your hand the more speed like a driver it’s going to get even a little bit more exaggerated you’re going to miss it more to the left so the first thing that sticks out to me here a couple things in the video is that you’ve got a little bit too much sort of cup in the wrist here to start right you’ve got a little bit too much extension to start which is not help and then you’ll see when you come into impact a really good back swing look here but when you come into impact it’s like from from about here to here you just sort of let that angle go just a little bit too much it’s almost like it gets a little bit Scoopy through the ball do you feel that a little bit Yeah flippy Scoopy and the guy you can see it kind of sends the ball a little bit too much to the left quickly which also I got to lose power with that got to lose power you’re adding LOF to the club yes Le speed’s going to be down smash factor is going to be down because the quality of the hit is not as much when you look at it from this angle to be honest with you one of the things that’s getting you into trouble here and one of the thing that’s adding to your extension number is you have a real low position with your handle here can you see how the difference between the angle that your arms are on and the angle that the club is sitting on are so different yeah when you put the lines in I can really see exactly so one of these numbers here that we look at which is called radial and owner which is how much your wrists are working this way take your stand for one second sure so this is the shot that you just recorded right and 25 look at this is this is the this number yep right 25 is for you literally see how low your hands are 25 right right now there right literally if you could get your hands into this this range which is a little bit more what we call owner with a wrist it’s it’s going to take a lot of this extension out right you see how when this handle went down the wrist went more extended right but the more it comes up the flatter it’s going to be so that’s just physics that’s how the the wrist works like coming down it’s naturally I want the grip of the club to be pointing towards your belt buckle which is a little bit higher position you had it much too low in relation yeah so if we can be here then we can start to work this wrist a little bit more easily like that so if you set up in the right position it’ll make the rest of it EAS it’s going to be much easier to take care of the back swing it’s like everything’s domino effect setup’s going to help with the back swing back swing at the Top’s going to help with transition and into impact right so you’re kind of making like life hard on yourself by putting in that position again if I use the uh if I use this again and I showed you it address so this is where I want you right look what happens to the face when the handle goes down everything’s going to be kind of going this way and then if you come into impact with a little bit of that scoop that’s going to send the face a big time left so we can take some of that out of it by being a little bit more upright and and getting that getting some of that radial out of it so that your wrists are a little bit more upright it’s almost like Bryson D Shambo does it like times kind of the extreme exactly so that’d be kind of a decent visual for you we’re not trying to get that high but that would help a little bit if you if you got into that but it’s such an interesting visual to just just from raising my hands up and down how much it’s changing the the face this way and this way correct and people think that it’s it’s their grip Chang their grip’s the you didn’t change your hands on the club at all but this is a much stronger grip than this one is just but that’s having that’s having it is going to have an effect during throughout the swing got because I’m going to show you how you’re going to hit one more for me I’m going to show you how that setup number is going to have an effect on the extension and flexion numbers as you swing back throughout and we’re only talking about on the hack it was it was only maybe 8 to 10 degree difference exactly which is a decent amount though yeah yeah cuz when I put you where you were it’s like oh my God I can’t believe I was even that low right you know what I mean so it takes some Reps for it to start to feel natural exactly your numbers I mean I kind of like the numbers your that shot that you just say you’re 14 at a dress 19 at the top F minus five in Impact so you know you’re working a little bit hard through the ball there but you’re you’re not far off in there I kind of like those numbers we just got to I think it’d be a little bit more consistent with the start line right cuz that was the one thing that showed up here so much if you look at all these swings you had pretty much on every shot you had a negative face angle when you hit the ball starting a little bit all those golf balls are going to start a little bit too much to the left like that one and keep going that way and then the trouble like on the course I’m hitting it left so now I start aiming a little more right and now I’m just making all those things more pronounced so on the back swing take your set up for a second cuz basically I I don’t want to get too I don’t want to get too crazy here with their left first numbers I want to basically be in this position here where everything’s kind of what I’d call neutral right so this would be extremely bod or flexed this would be extremely cupped or extended we just kind of want to be in the middle here and then maintaining that position coming down you can kind of almost see how it’s going into a little bit of flexion coming down easier to do that if you’re set up in the right spot on the Hackman app it gives you there’s a couple great drills on it but it gives you this one called the motorcycle drill so that’s where the things are kind of working you’re kind of revving the engine going this way easier to do that starting from this position as opposed to a position where you’re so low and have too much angle in there address but we’re not chasing Dustin Johnson no no no we’re just right in that level exact happy medium got it but I think that sort of Bryson thought process address will help you so just get the uh here we just raising thatly yeah which actually going to get you feeling taller right your chest is going to be higher you’re going to feel like you’re in a little bit more of a athletic position as opposed to a hunch position when the handle’s down got it so start there and not changing anything else with my swing for now just the setup I got it okay and I want you to do the last thing you do before you hit it is just raise the handle get into your normal setup and then just raise up a little bit so the grip ends pointing more towards your belt buckle yep and then go yeah that actually should be pretty straight ball flight yeah look look at so that one had a little had a little bit too much curve but you see the position of the face angle to dress you added a little bit too much path on that one but that’s a little bit more what we’re looking for with the start line it didn’t start left that time yep so I’m gon to set up my Norm then I’m just going to raise that handle a bit you got it much much better that ball because that face angle was so much better that Ball’s going to start right before it draws yeah right you had those numbers before with negative face angles so we’re we’re fixing the face angle basically through setup I getting things a little bit higher that’s taking a little bit of the extension out it’s going a little bit more because we’re trying to get more into this impact position you were trying to get there from a very low position like this cup too too much extension it’s just like you’ve got to work a little bit too hard in order to get that to happen I love putting it into the setup though because I I’ve kind of known I’ve been struggling with that working with the hack but I’ve been trying to do it up here I’ve been trying to do it at impact and trying to get more of that forward shaing here I’m I’m not thinking about that I’m just raising the handle before I yeah more the simpler we can get it the better simp is better yeah and for anyone it’s like you mentioned you struggle with a little bit of a of a hook Miss for anyone who’s hooking the ball that angle at addess will take some hook out of all right so everything else the same set up raise the handle real good yeah you you know you will eliminate left by feeling a little bit of that none of those are going to be going too much left so what I like to do when you’re taking your setup there is instead of instead of just taking your setup and like is this good is this good just go to your normal which you don’t a little low and then as part of your pre-shot routine right before you take it back you’re just raising it up a little bit pointing the belt buckle chest High keep it a little bit simple that that will sort of help with this and then everything we talked about because at the end of the day the most important part is controlling this lead wrist right like we spoke about with the motorcycle drill and getting this thing to go into flexion you’re going to have a better chance of being able to do those things if you’re starting from here if you’re starting from here and here it’s like just too much going on to try to Too Much twisting and torquing going on to try to get it and with the speed of a longer Club especially a driver which you said you hook more yeah it’s going to be tough to get that out of there so the general I know everybody is different everyone’s shaped different but for people watching generally you’re saying aimed more or less around where the belt buckle is exct that’s a good for Bron we’re may be way too high for me we’re way too low correct it’s right in there that’s right if you can get it better at to dress it’ll help with the rest of the Swing all right so I’ll keep working on that address use the hack thank you so much that’s awesome got great

Hack motion or dewiz?
This lesson you gave to your student is also going to benefit me immensely! I have been using this (pistol style) wrist set up with my putter, so now I can transfer it over to other clubs in my bag! Thanks for the tip! I have also become a new subscriber to you channel!
this might cause toe down at impact
6 to 7 degrees inside path. You are always gone be hooking/ drawing the ball.
I LOVE simple little, easy-to-do, tweaks like this to address swing problems!!!!!!
I know for a fact that I will benefit from this tip because I also start, intentionally, with my hands very low…….I will take this tip to the range tomorrow…….after the rain departs. 😎
WOW ! What revelation! I can't wait to try this at the range! Interesting!
Best most simple advise on the web 👍
That's awesome to see a little change in the setup can improve the golf swing and the feel. Thanks for sharing!
I have the EXACT same issue – a shot that starts a little left and then draws MORE left. I can't wait to try this on my SkyTrak.
Yeah, it's called the single-plane swing (almost). Go watch Moe Norman videos for a few hours, and then go give a listen to Todd Graves. There's nothing new in this swing style except that you aren't as straight-armed as Moe (or Todd). It simplifies the swing to as few a moving parts as you can get without losing too much distance.
I wish i had seen this video before cutting my iron short to cure toe up at setup.
Really good things to think about. It’s a reminder that club loft and lie have a correlation to direction and you can use address to tune it.
Nancy Lopez used to raise her hands before she started her backswing..
This is interesting cause I just had a lesson last week and my instructor gave me the same fix. It instantly improved my issue and ball striking.
Spot on, so glad I saw this, this is me and my issue, pure gold here thank you!
Excellent.
Who knew Seth Rogan knew so much about golf…
I went out to play nine yesterday and tried this handle shift and what a immediate difference it made. However, I was struggling with the driver and was hitting a weak slice from that position. Any help for driver would be appreciated. Thanks!
Wow, one small change and my game is back. Having a little problem with this on pitch’s but it will get there. Thanks
