Well, welcome back to the Obi-Wan podcast made possible by Betwinner and John. We’ve racked up the air miles again. You’re platinum now. I’m still silver, but we are back in the home away from home. It is London, of course. Exactly. And we’re joined by not one but two. I’ll say it. I can’t say this. First time we’ve had two players and we’ve landed I’ll say it the best partnership in the Premier League. Oh, they are absolutely. And they’re laughing. They know, aren’t they? Absolutely. This season, I mean, they’re killing it. They’re killing the partnership. It’s been absolutely fantastic. And I love watching both of them when they play. You know what I mean? Um, and they’ve been doing absolutely fantastic job this season. So, both of you, welcome to the podcast. Visa. Thank you, boys. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Invite as well. See you again. Bye. Thank you for the invite. Oh, don’t be silly. That’s all John’s doing. It’s great to have you on the pod. Thank you for opening up the doors at Brenford Football as well. It’s great to see you both. And just to kind of add to what John has said, I love watching you. We both love watching the pair of you. We were actually Stan for Bridge earlier this season. 2-1 defeat. I thought both of you were fantastic. It was a really good performance. But let’s start the friendship between the two of you. We’ve watched you walk in. You’re close off the field as much as you are on the field, aren’t you? Yes. Yes, we are. We are. Um because as I said, it’s really simple to get points because we both talk French. Um he’s a good guy. But yeah, and he’s always late, huh? Always late. Even on the beach before we walk. No, no, no. Always always late. Always on the borderline. Maybe sometimes on the borderline. Yeah, always borderline. But now you were late today. Yeah. Yeah. Because you know I had to do some gym. Yes. Okay. Amazing. I mean the partnership it’s been absolutely fantastic. Just to follow up on that, do you how did that happen? I mean since you guys came since you both joined the football club and I mean during training sometimes you might see okay there is a little bit of partnership here but we haven’t seen that for the past years but this year we’ve seen this season we’ve seen that partnership. Talk me through it. Is it is this something that happened or is it because of the the the the departure of of one man Ivan Tony? Is that what has brought this partnership now to light and everybody can see that oh wow this partnership is really really working? Yeah. Um yeah. Yeah. Okay. No. Yeah. I think it’s a bit of both because obviously um Ivan was the main mind. I think he he he deserved this role as well because the way he played when he came the first season he had in championship like like literally like help us a lot to to go up. So obviously like the game was a bit turned over him and that’s understandable and yeah obviously um when he left some people needed to to step up and I think that this is what we we done good each other and um and yeah I think even uh like of the pitch we are good friends uh in trainings as well we try to to give advice to to to him he tried to give advice to me. And I think this is how it works. Amazing. You you know each other so well like Yan, you know where he’s running. Brian knows where you you’re running. Yes. That helps that you work on it on the training ground, but is that because of the friendship that you have off the field? Yeah. Um as you said, uh me when I first came was Ivan and him. The um the manager was playing 352. So it was only spot. Uh like I just like um because during turning I just like look look them like how they play because at the moment it was like him Sergi Ivan Ivan yeah you know so it was like but like when I was not paying I was just looking at them like what they doing how they run I love to to watch that to look at that and uh that’s how it works a lot and of course when Ivan was banned last year he give me like the time like to of course as you said like put under the light like the friendship because in training it was so easy. You were looking each other so it was a bit tricky for the opponent but now this year I think we is more enjoyable honestly it’s more enjoyable. Yeah. I mean it it’s been it’s been so nice to watch. Every time I watch you guys play I love watching you guys play and and obviously you the you’re the guy you’re the man you know you’re the striker. Every time you hold up that play, I watch you. You just look at him and he’s already he’s gone and you just play it. And once you play it, you’re running into the box. It’s amazing to watch. You know what I mean? And it’s so good to see that, you know, this partnership is is growing it. You know, there’s something there. And talking about stepping up as well, Ryan, you Ryan, you’ve talked about it. I think when Ivan was there obviously he was the he was the main man like you said and so he deserved it as well like you said and he was the penalty taker isn’t he you know he was doing everything and now he’s left and you’ve taken over that that responsibility of taking penalties haven’t you and you really haven’t missed have you is it 10 10 out of 10 yeah 10 out of 10 what is it about what are you guys doing at Brenford because I Tony basically perfect from the penalty spot and you are perfect yeah um I Um I start to to work on it with him actually uh after training uh like u let’s say uh yeah two days a week every time we we we was going to take some pens against the keepers and um yeah I knew he was the the main taker and um I was the the second at this moment so obviously like if he couldn’t take it like I had to to show up and and take it and score it you know so I think Um yeah, he helped me a lot a lot a lot uh on this uh not not even on pen but uh I think um yeah this is uh how I can uh yeah try to to score them and so what will you do one day you guys are playing there’s a game going on and he scored two out open play he’s got two he scored two and then there’s a penalty for him to get hattrick will you give him the penalty to take it happen this Is he against IPS switch? But he didn’t give it to you. No, I didn’t ask for it because I don’t I just want him to be focused. Um because at the moment it was 22, I think. Yeah. So I don’t want like I don’t want to bother him. Um if he give it to me, it’s fine. If he don’t, it’s fine as well. I know he want to score as well. So if I score two, he scored one. As long as you win. As long as you win. This is what I talking before the game like we need to do something to help the team. That’s the that’s the that’s that’s the big part of the game. So if he’s fine with it, I’m fine with it. It’s not about like if if he threw 295 minute, of course he can say yes, I can give it to you. But if he’s like he feel like he need to shoot, it’s fine for me. No goalkeepers are watching this, Brian. I promise you no goalkeepers are watching this. So tell us what the secret is. 10 from 10. You’ve never looked like missing. What are you doing out there on that training pitch? give us the recipe. Yeah, it’s just um yeah, I think uh the how is just like a work um you know um the keeper here try to to make it as hard as possible for me and they are really on it you know it’s just like it’s it’s not just like a you know they just like okay D here they really on it they want to save it and this is this is why I think um it’s not it’s never easy but it get easier you know when you’re on the pitch because you with the hard work you put on on the trainings. I think like Yeah, I think it’s the same with the the finishing. I think you know when you when you do some finishing in front of the net like the hard work you put on the pitch then if you have an opportunity in the game that become easier and I think this is what happened with the pen as well. Yeah, cuz we’ve seen goalkeepers like Emmy Martinez trying to play you know with strikers in their head. Is that something you look at and think, oh, you just don’t you just block everything out and just focus on on the ball and the and the goal. You don’t look at what the goalkeeper is doing trying to put you off your Yeah, I think it’s their job because obviously the pressure is on the for me the pressure is on the attacker. It’s not on the keepers. Um because uh yeah, I think like everyone say like uh a penalty has to be a goal, but I think it’s not. But for me, the pressure is on the on the on the on the taker, you know. So yeah, you just need to try to to be focused on yourself and uh and yeah, at the end it’s a little game between the the keeper and the takers. It’s it’s amazing. John and I were talking. I’m sure you guys are aware of this as well. Top 10 goal scorers in the Premier League this season. Brenford have two players in the top 10. No other team does. You’re on 16 goals, Brian. Yan, you’re on 15. Is there a bit of a rivalry? Is there a little bit of a bet on the start of the season? Who’s going to score more? I think we’re going to bet maybe the last three game at some point it has to happen. Should we put a bet now? No, not but maybe the last three game when everything is gone. Everything we know. We going to pay the whole day. He’s going to pay the whole now. Now we don’t bet. Uh but he’s really I think he’s really as I saying it’s he’s amazing. He’s amazing. 215 goals. Um because it’s not like u we’ve been on top of the game every game, but it’s like a is a crazy achievement. 215. I think we have like more more and more to to do. I try I try to help him um to score as well and try to help me to score. So that’s that’s how it works. And um but yeah, he’s a let’s see the the next uh the next two game we’re going to say okay, it’s fine. the last three I think we’re going to bet and see how he finish and hopefully he’s going to finish well for me but but yeah for now he’s not like he’s not really betting um me I’m fine when he scored I’m more happier when he scored than when I score it’s really strange but he’s like he’s like my little brother actually so that’s why that’s why it’s good I mean you’ve talked about um patience talked about patient you know obviously when when Ivan was here it was you and Ivan who was playing and You you just said it there. You were not in the picture. You were not playing as much. How difficult was you for you back then knowing that you know this both of them that always the manager every weekend is both of them. How difficult was it and how much patient were you did you put on yourself? Was it difficult for you to continue training week in week out knowing that okay it’s going to be these two that’s going to start in front of me. How did you deal with that? Um the first six months wasn’t that difficult because uh I know like I was just joining the club and um and after that like I knew I had my I would have a chance and I know the gaffer like trust me. So like I was quite lucky because when I first joined I start to score very early. Okay. Yeah. Um so that’s helped me a lot to be to put my name on the picture. Okay. after that I get injured and it give me like like two months like to get it back properly. So um I start to be uh I start getting frustrated the second year. Okay. But um you know not not on the door but like on myself like I need to put my more on you need to do it more. Yeah I need to do it more like on myself. Um so uh and at some point I was quite happy because um when Christian first John Yeah. He changed the formation in 352 to 34 43. So that helped me a lot to to put myself on the side and Brian on the side and Ian playing as a striker. But when we was playing with against big team of course for 352 and it was Brian and Ivan all the time. But like when you change the formation it was like okay I was more and more into it more yeah more on the on um I would say on the score sheet of course sometimes but more on the pitch and after that I was just like looking at them how they play and Thomas know like I could have play striker as well sometimes um but yeah it was a bit lot of work mentally um but I’m I’m quite like passion like I’m a cool guy very not not never but never like angry be, you know, address, you know, sort of the strike who goes to the manager and you want to show him, you know, you know, on the training page games what you can do. Exactly. I don’t like to talk to the manager when I when I don’t feel like I’m very comfortable. Yeah. Um, so yeah, it was always Thomas coming to me and uh, push me, push me, I want you to do this more, I want you to do this more. So it was a bit tricky for me because in the beginning when the guy first said like I want you like for instead of press more I was only focus on that that only only pressing. So I was talking about the game I wasn’t focused about the game just like I need to press I need to press when the ball pass away just just don’t look at the ball just just press or me back. I was just looking. So my game was a bit tricky. and then when the ball comes to you, you don’t know what to do. You don’t know what to do. Guys, help me. So yeah, that’s that’s that’s the tricky part when you are not like in a good shape, in a good mood, in a good confident. I think that’s that’s that’s why I appreciated a lot. So um yeah, at some point of course the guys like Brian, like Ivan, Ivan really really helped me a lot. Um of course different kind of good to know. So he was so he was really really nice to you guys like he was sort of that senior kind of player who helped you know young players coming if both of you are playing in the same position and he was there to help you encourage you give you advice and make you better because I think like he wanted the the the good for the team as well and he knew about him he knew about me that uh we are good players obviously and uh he knew like uh he knew our abilities and Um that’s why he was um like he he he gave us so much advice as well you know and uh even on the pitch he was really demanding on us like maybe sometime if we miss a pass you know it’s like yeah come on common you know because you know like we he know he know like how good we can we can we can play you know that’s why I think yeah it helped it help us a lot the first in words the bet on winning with bet winner bet winner your ultimate partner for smart bets big wins and endless excitement. That’s unique that because you guys are great friends off the field, but let’s be honest, maybe not now because you’re both playing, but back then, yeah, you’re fighting for the same position. So, Brian, you’re his good friend. You know that he’s frustrated, but you’re keeping him out of the team. So, how do you manage that as a friend because you know he’s struggling at that point? But to be honest like as he said he never shown like uh he never really showed that he was pissed you know or he was uh angry you know it was like that’s why I like um I told him because sometime on interviews they they ask us like um uh um what things uh did I help him to do and what what thing did you help me to do like uh I always say like uh is his mental part because uh obviously like uh when he mentioned the part when he he didn’t play as much as now, he was like always like focused um always with the smile try to to encourage the the the teammates every time, you know. I think this is something big. Yeah. Because um um I think like um it’s important that um a teammate is not dropping his head like Yeah. you know, show he’s angry because for the group is I don’t feel it’s good. So it’s something like I I really um yeah really appreciate to him. I mean talk about that both of you are strikers, both of you want to score goals, but when you finish a game and you didn’t score a goal, how do you feel after that? Do you go back home? Do are you sort of are you that sort of striker that kill yourself and say, you know what, oh [ __ ] I didn’t score today. You know, you’re gonna beat down yourself. You’re gonna be demoralized. Or you just sort of that struggle go, okay, you know what? Today wasn’t my day. It’s tomorrow. I’m going to go back, you know, on the weekend and I’m going to make sure that I score. How do you guys deal with it if you finish a game and you didn’t score? Depend think it depend of uh if we won the game or not. That’s the first thing. Strikers like to score. Of course. Of course. But the second the second thing is yes, I think I’m more the the one who said like it wasn’t my day. Um let’s try my best more. But of course sometime I guess especially when you miss like three four five big chances of course you have to be angry of course you have to be angry you have to you say it’s my fault today but yeah sometime win like even if you win like and I miss like three four chances I will be really you’ll be disappointed a little bit you know because uh you know how good you can be and uh even if we win of course I’m I’m going to be happy you know of course but in in somewhere in my head I’m I’m going to be like come on man you you better than this, you know, and of course like it’s good to have the the thought, okay, next week I’m going to score or something, but at the at the same moment you say like, ah, come on, man. And yeah, obviously you go you’re going after. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What makes this football club so special? You know, again, we we look at Brenford from the outside and the word, if if someone was to ask me, describe Brenford in a word. I think the word that springs to mind is humility. and listening to you Brian talk about you and I can see the humility in you. the fact that you’re there and you the same Brian you support your teammates there’s no ego there’s no I in team Brenford seems special on the outside you’ve got an incredible manager that we’re going to get to but from the both of you you’ve been here for six years Brian you’ve been here for four you what makes Brenford football club the kind of special entity that they are think he’s a family family yeah he’s a family the manager he can be your friend Thomas he can be my friend like I said really you can knock on his Yeah, you can knock on the door and talk about everything you want and he’s like he’s the one coming to you and say like oh look at my son what he’s doing he’s this kind of guy. So I think we know like we have to handle like lot of pressure less than the big club of course but we need to be safe in Premier League which is not easy and secondly like you need to trust your teammate. I think that’s the other part as well. But the way I trust him is the the way he trust me as well. And the way for instance like um uh Chago is not playing the way we love him, the way he’s willing like to give 100% of himself, come talk to talk to the guys is is is unique. He’s unique I think. And I had I had I was lucky because I I felt like this when when um Allor my old club. Yeah. But I I know like some some player never witnessed this before. But Brenford is like something different. It’s like a family very small. Everyone is say hello to everyone. Everyone’s look of course when we lose is hard to be be happy but everyone try to like every time like bring everything together. No egos as you said no egos. sometime is he’s crazy. I think for me Brand has to be more ego than everyone. No, honestly honestly because he’s been like in the club for long and he helped a lot. He scored and but as you said like he’s no egos and so I think that’s how make the club special getness isn’t he? Yeah. So is that coming from the manager you think? Is that coming from the manager that bring the players together and be like, you know what, I don’t want any ego here, you know, everybody’s the same and everybody’s fighting for the same the same cause, which is to make the club bigger and bigger. I don’t even think it’s the from the manager, you know. Um I think it’s it’s the people, you know, it’s just like simple people, you know, who who want to enjoy playing football together, you know, and I think even like the structure, you know, because uh we kind of have have the the same since we are in championship. They haven’t changed a lot you know we we just get like few like um like few new players you know to help us like we saw and but there is no many like uh the world team changed you know like some other team we can see when uh when they get promoted sometime they buy a lot a lot of players and sometime it can work of course but I think like that’s why we are really really stick together and we have a very good group I think even sorry even Matthew the owner yeah we show with the camera shirt. Really? Yeah. He’s like that. Oh, that’s nice. Honestly, that’s really nice. That’s something special. So, he’s really involved. He’s Yeah, he’s really involved like talk with the guys, of course. Yeah. He loves statistic and he come to the training. He come to the training. The owner. The owner. Yeah. Look at the data. Yes. He knows everything about the club. He loves the players. He knows everyone in the club. I think that’s that’s how he makes special. And you said, of course, the manager is the one who is is holding everything and he’s been here for the so long. I think that’s the that that’s that’s the secret of the success because it’s been so long. Everyone knows he’s going to be him. The stability. Yeah. The stability makes make the change. I think he makes even like when we had like some maybe some bad periods. Um I think like first of all the players trusted him a lot, you know. um we always trust him and uh we always knew like it was going to work, you know, even uh um I remember um when uh when we had like um I think it was five uh five or six loss in a row like some people were saying that maybe oh maybe uh Thomas was uh like not good enough for stuff but we all trusted him and now we can see like he’s doing a great great job keeps it stable. doesn’t get too high, doesn’t get too low. You’ve talked about him taking an interest in family, you know? I look at Thomas Frank and he looks like the kind of bloke I would love him to be my uncle. He’s just Does he ever go mad? Like the haird dryer treatment, the teacups as we say over here in the UK like bollock. Has he ever gone in hard? Ever had to? I think one time. Yeah, I swear once here once or twice maximum. Honestly, one time really angry. Hal time. I don’t know which game, but he was so angry because he knew like we were better than the other team, but we were not doing the right thing. Yeah. And I think it was N at half time. What game was it? It was a decision season. No, it was last season. Last season. I can’t remember which which game, but it was the first time I was like, okay, now I need to be better. You need to run more. Oh, wow. You need to press more. I need to press more. Press more. Yeah, seriously Thomas now Thomas is someone special so hard he’s so hard like I had like so many meet so many meetings with him one v one week once a week so many from since I first John Bford I think I had like more meeting than I see my wife in what is it is it is it just uh you know positioning or is it what is it he’s telling you is it what does he want from you just he what apart from the pressing. Oh, from the pressing. Okay. Honestly, the press the pressing press I think is and of course the statistic about like um the where I need to to run more and when Brian has the ball how where I need to be uh when is like um the ball in midfielder where I need to be. It’s all about like he’s really precise man. He’s really precise and otherwise you go mad like But yeah, but he’s with the thing I like with him is really positive. He’s really positive. He’s never like even when you do rubbish things sometimes. You never point front of everyone. You just like one v one let’s talk. And so that that’s that’s um how who is and how I give myself 100% to perform well. I think what what what’s with the chewing gum? I want to ask that though. He’s all every time I see him on the touch, he’s always chewing. Oh yes. Is that something? Because I look at him, it’s like Alex Vegas does the same. How many gums does he chew in a game? Do you do you guys have an idea? I think one pocket. I think it’s 12. So why to me 20 minutes? Yeah. Even my my family my family um when they watch the game sometime they they they have a focus on the gaffer. Yeah. And um they when they when we have a call they say uh come on why your why your gaffer always like his shingle like it’s really funny but to be fair me too I play with shingum I think it’s because of the fact like because he talk a lot he talk and so he’s never dry he’s never dry I think me too I play with shingum more and more and he helped me like to like have more I don’t know how saliva I don’t know how you saliva so he can talk Yeah. He doesn’t know that. No, I don’t know because he didn’t share with you didn’t share with you. He doesn’t share everything with you. No, I never because I never like um I almost never like shoe shingham. Yeah. Like never even outside football like really I don’t know. I don’t really like it. I play with I play with Shingham. I play with Yeah. He’s more He’s more like you got more saliva. It’s like but Thomas I think is like is a stress as well. Maybe I think it used to be cigarettes. Nice. I guess the million-dollar question, and I want to just preface this by saying, of course, Brenford Football Club don’t want to lose Thomas Frank. You guys see him dayto-day. Is he good enough, boys? Is he good enough to go right to the top of the game? There’s been a lot of clubs linked with him from what you see of his ability, management, tactical. Do you guys have any doubt that he could he could manage? I’ll throw clubs, you know, your Barcelonas, your Paris. He’s that good. Yeah, I think he you want to I think I think I think he’s that good. Uh I think what you need he he really need like of course everything is about progressing. I think he’s going to be the ego ego of the club. I think I think he’s going to be the ego. I think he’s I think that’s the only thing in I think you’ve been in a big club. I think that’s the ego you need to deal if you’re not capable to to deal with the ego because here no one has ego. All right. Okay. So it’s easier for him to manage. Yeah. It’s easier for him to manage. Everyone is willing to to play hard. And of course, now you got more time in the big club. You need to perform well. Exactly. You don’t get time except if you got big project, new owner. I don’t know. I don’t know. But I I think first of all, I don’t think I don’t know if if he is he capable, but is he’s he’s shown enough that he’s he has he has an ability to be there. I think that’s the next move for him. I think he’s the next move is the next step for him. And I think he would be in I think he showed that he cap he’s more than capable. But even if he stays here, Brian, do you think he’s he’s the next I mean you guys have been there. What is next for Yeah. for uh for B. What is next? And do you think Thomas is that guy to take you guys to the next level with this football club? I mean, you obviously want to aim higher. You think he’s that guy to take you to the next level? Take the team or take the team. The team. Yeah. Yeah, of course. because um um except the the last season who we struggled a bit um I think the the the second season we finished uh uh nine I think or 10 something like this and uh now I think we we we are in a really good place um we we are 11 or 12 yeah but it’s really tight really tight like if one or two game you can be like six or something you know so I think too much. Yeah, maybe too much. But is that the target though? Europe. Is that what you guys are looking at? I think yeah, I think we we need to to to aim big, you know, because like I know I know he is. I know I know I am as well because I’m a big big big competitor and um I trust my teammate. I know their abilities. I think we have a great group. So why not? I think yeah, you know. Yes. When you look at Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Fulham have had a great season. Nothing tells me that you guys can’t make that next step because the quality, John and I talk about it a lot on this podcast, the quality to the so-called top teams, tight. It’s tight now. It’s closing up as well. It’s closing up. It’s about consistency in the Premier League. Certainly from me looking in and you guys are not a million miles away from joining them. So you believe that you have the capabilities of top six and getting into Europe? I think yes. I think we we are quite lucky because uh we had the same as you said same players for the next the last four years. So the more and more we had like more confidence more experiences of the Premier League. But yes, um I really need to win games to be to aim high or to concent. I think I think what forest they’ve done very well. One nil done. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. The first goal. Yeah, that’s the thing. Of course they won four, five nil, 5-1, etc. But some game one nil, game done, finished, game finished. I think that’s that’s the next level we need to we need to we need to add another game. So that’s why I was quite happy uh with the the last two games against Chelsea and against Arsenal because we’ve shown that yeah of course we can handle nil against Chelsea a big team could have yeah we’re more solid we are definitely more solid definitely more solid against against Newcastle we are a bit unlucky because uh we scored the g the goal and we tried and we consider a top goal from Tonali but yeah against Arsenal we going again we going again and so yeah it’s really it’s really tight but I think sometimes we don’t trust ourself or we don’t know how capable we we be yeah I think that’s that’s the thing sometimes we need to to improve as a team or as a player myself as well sometimes I’m too much like I’m I am good enough to to go a bit more a bit more yeah yeah it yeah so that’s the thing right how do you how do you bring that out is that something you’re working on or do What will bring that out of you? Because you know you have more, isn’t it? How do you get that out? Because listen, I played obviously DJ Drogba who you guys know really, really well. He was so so um he pushed himself so much, you know, during training. He knows what he’s capable of, but he’s always pushing for more and more. You know, even when he’s that guy, we know he’s that guy. He’s the main man. that during training, after training, he’s there taking free kick, taking penalties, always trying to improve, you know, his his ability. Is that something you guys still to still do and think that you can still push yourself to the next level? Yeah, I think this is something we can always do. Um, but uh you need like a lot of resilience and a big mental because uh if you you can say, “Yeah, I want to be there. I want to be there.” But if you don’t do um um what is it? Why exactly? If you don’t do like uh like a little bit to to to do it, then uh if you just like lay lay on on what you you’ve been doing before, um you you won’t be able to to achieve what you you really want, you know. So yeah, I think uh the mental part is to say to yourself like when it’s getting hard, uh can I go harder? Yes. Okay, I push and if you say no, okay, you’re going to stay like the the the good player you are, you can’t be like the best you can be for myself. The force in words, the bet on winning with bet winner. Betwinner, your ultimate partner for smart bets, big wins, and endless excitement. You know, it’s interesting, Yan. I go back to something that you said that’s kind of stayed with me. talk about this football club being a real family. And I I think I’m I’m stating something that’s very obvious and and I don’t mean this disrespectful to Brenford at all, but on a Saturday, yes, your fans are demanding. Yes, you’re demanding of yourself, but there’s not the same demands as you might get at Chelsea or Arsenal or Liverpool or Manchester United where a draw is seen as a crisis. You guys have got that serenity, that tranquility. You come back in on a Monday, Thomas, get back down to work. You stick to the protocol and you go again at the weekend. There’s there’s a lot of clubs that have a similar, I guess, kind of environment which to work on. But I look at you two and your own futures. Do you feel that you guys have got that ego to go back to the word that you used to step up to go on and play for clubs where the demands are that that much greater? Manchester United and Chelsea John’s team are in the media a lot lately because the assumption is they don’t have good enough players. I’m of the belief there’s good players there but it’s up here that they struggle because they struggle with the demands that that football club place on. I wonder about you two. Are you conscious of that that you’ve got it I’m not saying easy at this football club but you’ve got an environment that allows you to have that serenity. Does that make sense? Yeah. Yeah, it does make sense. I think I think you are ready. I think bro I think we’ve shown that we are ready but I don’t I don’t because we we never witnessed that this is it we don’t know we don’t know we don’t know so that’s that’s the the thing we need to be amblebo enough because of course you can judge like player at Chelsea you can judge player at Tottenham you can judge United but because you never witness that the pressure every single day so that’s the next step we need to improve but as soon as we witness that how we going to get out of it I think that’s that’s how it makes players better as you Drop he he was the main man. He pushed himself like very hard and he showed that he can be the main man and be the best striker in the world at this time. I think that’s that’s that’s the thing of course and Brenford is easy as you say we draw against we draw against Chelsea’s top Chelsea draw against what bad result for them because of the demand because of the fan because of of the club salaries everything everything so if of course as if if we go on the I hope we’re going to go in club if we if we can but I think that’s the thing we need to be prepared we need to be prepared of the demand you score one goal you need to score the same goal next week, then again next week. So, I think that’s the demand we need to push and try to to achieve. Are you comfortable, Brian? You think you’ve got the abilities to to go higher and and to Yan’s point, get that consistency where it’s not one goal in three, it’s one goal every week. That’s the standard that the the very best are being judged on now. Yeah. You feel you have that? Yeah, I think like as I said like I always wanted to to to like to play the like the the biggest game the for the biggest club you know uh when I was younger. So yeah and as I said before like uh it’s easy to say yeah I want to be there but obviously like you need to put a lot of demands on yourself you know uh and uh yeah I think yeah I shown as well what I was capable of and uh and uh yeah you know um I’m really demanding on myself as well um because uh I know I have the abilities but uh yeah after we as you said we we never know what what can happen sorry Yeah, I think I think obviously Thomas Frank has done really really well with players. He brings in players, not bigname players and then he develops them and and and makes them this big players. Obviously, no disrespect to to to Brenford, but Brenford is sort of a club that gets these players and Thomas Frank makes them into, you know, better players and then sells them off, isn’t it? So, is that something that’s in your head? you guys are thinking, you know what, this season or this transfer window, it might be me because, you know, I’m putting in the numbers. I’m doing what I have to do because you obviously you want to, you know, Brenford is a big club, but you know, obviously you guys want to, you know, next step next step or maybe another different environment. So, is that something that’s always always playing in your head or you you’re very very comfortable here and you don’t mind if it’s here or or another top top big club? I think everyone everyone needs to step even um even Brenford wants to be a European team. Yeah. Now they’re in Premier League team. Now after that they need so everyone wants to push forward. Of course u some player can some player cannot. It’s fine but he’s part of the game. You want to be the place player you need to be the bigger club. I don’t as you said is not the due respect for Brenford. We know like he’s a he’s a massive club for us but we know that United etc. they are above rainfall but when we play against them on the pitch it’s 50/50 it’s 50/50 but like because of the fan bars is much bigger etc so doesn’t make the difference I just said the money etc the spend etc is not the same as Brenford that United have but this is the kind this kind of team you want to to to be and play with because I like so many example in Premier League like city Arsenal this kind of this kind of team but Yep. I think that’s the that’s the aim for everyone. Everyone is want to go uh because you proved that. Yeah. Going back to to to to to Thomas. Listen, I played on the so many managers, big managers. So many. Yeah. Exactly. They never got the the the stability that Thomas has here. You know what I mean? For us, if you don’t win one season, next season they give you half a season. If you don’t win, you’re gone. That’s true. So, you know, we had this certain guy called Mourinho, you know, he was a manager that knew how to get the best out of different players. Yeah. And when we lose a game sometimes, very important game, you know. Next day, we come to training, we don’t see him, sits upstairs in his office and watches us for two days, he doesn’t come down. He doesn’t until we go out the next game and win. And then he comes down to the training ground and then, oh, hi, my friend. How are you? And Thomas deal with losses. How does he deal with it? Um first of all um you got one rule first of all. Say again. You got one rules 24 hours. Yeah. Yeah. One rules. 24 hours to be angry. 24 hours to be happy. Okay. Is that right? Yeah. We can’t be angry for 24 hours. But like the next one Yeah. It’s it’s gone. you know, you need to you need to to to go again and you know there is another opportunity than a quick but I think yeah obviously like everyone uh especially like uh how about the scenario is he he can be frustrated as well but yeah as you said like yeah um today you you might be angry but the next day don’t you you go again and you push for the next week some managers wait until the Monday I know I spoke to Jurg Jurgen Klopp actually said this doesn’t like speaking to the players win lose or draw lets them do their thing shower change go he’ll go away he’ll study the game and he’ll come back with more measured comments on a Monday morning because he feels there’s too much emotion after a game is to Thomas like that or does he like to get in amongst you guys after a game I think Thomas sometimes can be emotional but is as you said is win or learn is he’s part of the game win or And so yeah, sometimes you can be like straight frustrated, but he said like, “Okay guys, I’m going to let’s see on Monday.” And he gone and he’s gone. Yeah. Like Yeah. small message like uh just small like few lines and uh Yeah. But as you said, there it’s never like a oh yeah, you did this bad. Oh yeah, you did this really well. Of of course when we win like he praise some guys, but when we when we lost like it’s not okay, what did you do here? Um, we could have done this better or something. Always. Yeah. Always cool and not maybe cool, but um yeah, like see you Monday. And it’s football. You have to be emotional sometimes. You have to be emotional. So sometimes it’s like guys, see you Monday. That’s why I like it so much because he’s he’s such a nice guy. So you can see like when he’s getting angry, he’s like, “Is he faking?” you know, but yeah, it’s football. So, sometimes, you know, he’s like, as you said, like when we win, of course, he plays like a lot of guys and that that’s what he’s really good at. And, uh, when we lost, he’s like, okay guys, um, we should have more done this much better, etc., etc., but see Mondays, we like very few lines and said like get shower and go home. Yeah, for us, you know, back then again, go back to Marina when we lose games. I think I think you guys got it good this time. I’m telling you. Yeah. Oh, the table is flying the You don’t want to be close to the table because you know the energy water will fly in your face and everything and he will go crazy. He goes straight into everybody. Straight into everybody. Straight after the game. Yes. Straight after the game. And then he does that and then you come the next day, you don’t see him. He’s upset. Uh we want to talk international as well. Of course, both of you representing African nations from an international standpoint. H I want to start. African Cup of Nations has been in the headlines in the last few months. I’m sure you saw John losing his bleep a few weeks back comments and it’s what it has done whether you agree with Jamie Cariger’s comments or not and I know John definitely doesn’t agree. It’s led to conversation. It’s led to the spotlight being popped on African nations, the African Cup of Nations. It’s led to conversation and that’s what we’re here for. African Cup Nations points, let’s just get it out the way. It’s a bloody big tournament, isn’t it? It’s a major tournament. It’s a major tournament. Yeah, it’s a major tour tournament. There’s no discuss about that. After that, like we can discuss about Yes. If you win the if you win the Champions League and if you win the AFCON, if who is more willing to win the the Bondor, of course, we can discuss about that because that’s a fact as well. But I think AFCON not I think AFCON is is a measurement. Of course. I think I think like even like um when you see the the stats uh a lot of people are watching it even more than some more than Yeah. I think. Yeah. Yeah. More than Yeah. So um at this point I don’t really understand people who like not don’t understand because maybe I think it’s a like personal opinion but um just even with this you you you can you can see it’s a it’s a bigger tournament. So yeah, exactly. Because you know, like when it happened, you know, I I I kind of like felt really bad for people to come out and say things like that, not knowing how much it means for us. It means, you know, not just for us, our family, the culture, the African culture, what football and Afan means to us. I grew up watching Afan. That’s what motivated me to say, okay, you know what? I want to play football. I want to make sure I win this trophy. And when people get to ask me, I was lucky to win it in 2013. I’ve always ranked the AFCON tournament together with the Champions League for me. So these are my two biggest trophies that I won in my life. The Champions League and the AFCON. I think the AFCON for me is bigger than the Premier. I rated both of them the same because I know how difficult it is to win the AFCON, especially with your national team. There’s so many great players that played for the national team, never got to win anything with the national. So it’s so important and it’s massive. So when people come out to downplay our African competition say, “Oh, it’s not as big as the Euros.” I get recognized more since I play AFCON. I get recognized more since I play AFCON. Before that, I was like, “Okay, it’s fine.” But really? Yeah. Yeah. Honestly, more than the Premier League. Wow. Yeah. As soon as I play AFCON because we’ve done well with with our country I get recognized more with everyone even in France in England because everyone watch Premier League of course but sometimes the same time as the as the French league as the German league you know but AFCON like everyone was just watching and I think it was a it was such amazing experience well organized um people was happy uh a lot of things happened with the ivory course Yeah, I think is I think everyone understand um that is the major tournament. Everyone is but the other the other is like if you win the AFCON, will you be the first one to win the bar? I think that’s the that’s something we need to talk about. But AFCON is Can I ask Brian, are you comfortable when you go and represent your your c country in Cameroon? You’re one of the top dogs. You are one of the main men. When you leave this environment of Brenford, which I can tell listening to you boys, it’s you feel safe. It’s it’s a family, you know, everyone. When you travel back to Africa into that environment, Cameroon, do you feel comfortable with the the the pressure of a nation on your shoulders? Yeah, it’s something like way much different because obviously maybe we have a I don’t know how many how many people are supporting Brenford but when you go for Cameroon there’s like 33 millions people behind your back huge and uh so yeah I think it’s a different pressure and um but I enjoy it you know uh I enjoy it because uh this is this is what you you want to feel as a footballer like because there is a lot of adrenaline uh when you when you go on the pitch you can see the people happy when you score when you win a game. Uh because it’s simple in Cameroon when there is a game like there is nothing in the road there’s all at the stadium more watching it you know so when you when you when you win like everyone is happy they do go doing like watching like just enjoying themsel after the game and this is something big you know just like make people happy just by by playing football is something really big and and yeah I think I’m really grateful the first in words the Bet on winning with Betwinner. Betwinner, your ultimate partner for smart bets, big wins, and endless excitement. This is such an unfair question. I’m sorry to ask you this, but I’ve got to ask you both this. I offered you the Premier League or the African Cup of Nations. You could win one medal. What are you picking? Afan. Afan. Yeah. Same. Afan. Yeah. Afan. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that’s huge. That’s big. Yeah. Because you got one country and you got so many clubs. Yeah. Exactly. Angor won with Lester and Chelsea but he won walk up with only one country. Yeah, true. But I’ve every day. Every day. And what would it be like in the democratic? I think I would I think I would cry. I think I would keep crying until someone wake me up. Yeah. Because you know when is Congo uh my family getting very emotional like proper emotional like my mom can’t really like handle the game how she has to take some you know some yeah some tablet etis she has to take everything oxygen oxygen honestly it’s getting personal it’s getting personal is it’s very emotional as Brian said like because you know our country is not Perfect. Okay. He’s not perfect. Which country is by the way? Yeah. But it’s like the war outside. So even when DGBA uh with Ivost won the AFCON Exactly. is end the war. Yeah. End the war. I said that in a podcast. Can you imagine that? Yeah. Exactly. Can you imagine that? How powerful it is? And that’s true. And that’s true AFCON as well. That’s during AFCON. That’s when when somebody says Afcon is not big enough a human being a player stopped a war because of the Afcon tournament because the tournament was going on there imagine how many kids how many people would have been killed during that war but because Dia droback came out and say please there’s football going on everybody stopped can you imagine that it is it’s amazing it’s amazing it’s like it g me like ghost boom it’s like So that’s why is I can’t as ad say we can’t really understand but we can understand because they don’t they don’t know they don’t know how powerful it is you don’t know how powerful it is and and do you feel different I think I’ve asked you about this John like do you feel different in yourself do you feel more emotional when you pop on Cameroonian colors Democratic Republic of Congo do like again you’re you’re professional so you’re trying to stay in the in the moment you’re trying to yeah when you put on that jersey you put on it’s faith. You put on the weight of a nation. That’s what you put on. I don’t know how you guys feel. Yeah. I’m so emotional. Yeah. I see. Yeah. I usually I’m not very emotional. I’m more calm. More when I’m going there. I’m very emotional. I’m very emotional. Even during the the undem. Oh, the national item. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The national item. You feel like you feel like you want to cry. That’s a few times I almost shed tears. I was like, you know what? This is so emotional. You know, I was lucky enough I I won so much with Chelsea. And when I won the Champions League in 2012, everybody, 300 million people in Nigeria was like, “Okay, listen, mate. You keep winning with Chelsea. Enough with the So imagine 300 million people, 270 million, 300 million people put that that weight on my shoulder because I was the guy, I was the put that weight on my shoulder.” And the AFCON was the next year, 2013. That’s how and I was so lucky, you know, I went there I led the country and we won it. I was like, “Okay, here you go. Here’s your answer.” So for me, that was is so emotional. And AFCON, I will never when people downplay it or try to discredit it. For me, I I get really really angry. So I I get very protective because I know how how special it is. Obviously, the next one is this year, the end of this year. So how do you feel both of you Cameroon? First of all, you guys are giants of, you know, you guys are massive. You big big. You haven’t won it in a long time now, haven’t you? Yeah. The last one was uh 2017. Yeah. Uh and yeah, I think u like with for for Cameroon, everyone knows like it’s a big big nation of football and um they they know what we can we can achieve as well. And uh for a personal point um you know like I’m really really excited because obviously the last one I couldn’t do it because of an injury but um yeah uh I was watching the game and I was like oh my days was so good you know like the emotions like when they win when they score you know so yeah it’s so good you know and um yeah for for a personal point like I’m really really excited. Do you think this is the time for me to win again? Of course. Of course. Of course, man. Of course. Anyone. Everyone want to We want to win like anyone. But yeah, like especially for I would love to Yeah. to play like Yeah. Yeah. What about you, Whisa? You think Congo? I think Yeah, I think we we showed that last AFCON we got a very good players, very good team. Um so yeah, hopefully uh we’re going to do much better than what we’ve done. We finished fourth. I think now we can we can put uh our name on the on the on the on the table and try to do a a trophy. Why not? No, why not? No, is if we’re you won’t you know we we watch AFCON and last year it was crazy. Um I go get saved because of the the winning of Marco and they won AFCON. You know they change the manage etc. I think a everything can happen but yeah we need to be amble enough to know like there’s no small country I think that’s the Zambia winning it this is crazy the quality of like the let’s say smaller countries are now there is no small so that’s uh that’s why I’m looking forward um I think he’s going to be well organized as well Morocco top country um yeah really looking forward I’m excited for that growing up to ask each of you who is your idol growing up I’ll Ask me. Um, he was hidden as Yeah. Yeah. Oh, Brian was born. Yes, we we know about He knows. Yeah, I know. What do you think about him? He was tell everything. He’s the laziest trainer I ever laziest trainer. Never trained. I know. I found out on some interviews. But under the light is not the laziest. when the lights you have to focus on him, you know, you know he was going to do something. He doesn’t like he doesn’t like training. He doesn’t like football. I know. But this is crazy how good he was, man. Like um when I say idol, yeah, it’s like a like football like player. Like I really like I wanted to be like him, you know. You know, he was like when you see like so effortless, you know, when he was playing and yeah, I was just loving watching. Yeah. Wow. That’s a good answer for the Chelsea fans watching this listening. You are me I don’t have one. No no I don’t have one. Um to be fair like of course um I had like DBA um even uh Joo. I love him. Wow. Especially on PS honestly. Yeah. Um so yeah I didn’t have like one to pick um except uh one goalkeeper. I forget his name. He played for Bayan. Honestly I loved him. Crazy guy. I I don’t know. I love loved loved him. He’s the only goalkeeper I would say like I loved him. You have to know he was a goalkeeper when he was young. That’s why maybe and then you just didn’t grow. You are still to keep going as well. Yeah. Well, because I was I was goalkeeper from 8 to 12. Yeah. But you knew like it was like this, bro. You didn’t like I think I would do much better than you. I was goalkeeper. I never wanted to be goalkeeper to be honest. And my mom said like, “Stop. You’re too small. Stop uh say to your manager, I don’t want you to be goalkeeper anymore because we don’t see goalkeeper on TV.” You see what she said? And after that I stopped being goalkeeper. And uh because obviously when when I I grew up like I was playing football every every day every day I was playing football. So I had like ability to play football but like on the on the pitch and huh every time on the goalkeeper. No no no. I was m as a team. What is the toughest team in the Premier League you guys do not like playing coming up against? What’s the toughest team? That’s that’s different. The toughest or the one I don’t like to play against? Both. And when? This season or like since we we are there? Season. This season. We play them soon. No. You play them soon? You going to say Bratton? No. No. No. I don’t talk about this team. No. Really? No. Why? The hardest. No. No. No. Not the hardest. Oh, you don’t like? Yeah. I don’t like the one. the one you don’t like. I don’t know. You don’t like the way they play or they or they just so good. They’re so good. You don’t like they’re coming up against them or they they’re so physically tough. Okay. Yeah. Physical tough. Uh is uh Crystal Palace. Oh yeah. Crystal Palace. Really? So hard to play against them. It’s so hard to play against them because I felt like honestly when I play against them, I felt like we play against ourel. Wow. Honestly. True. Yeah. Honestly, this is this is why I fail like we play against ourel and try try to do try to win now. And that’s I think as well like people doesn’t like to play against us as well. No, it’s true. It’s true. No, it’s true. Big clubs, they always say, “Oh, Brenford, oh, Brenford Pep Guil every time he comes up, it’s like, ah, you know, Brenford, they’re always very very difficult.” Do you guys feel that? That does that give you more motivation? Because you you tend to do really well against big clubs, do you? Yeah, I think uh yeah I think because of course is easiest motivation in the world playing against big club you play against big club you has now you have to extra motivation extra motivation and after after that that’s the good thing the good thing as well you got good ability ab abilities as well you got good players who can handle the pressure and try to do our best to to play well but I think the toughest team in the team I would say like Arsenal I think Arsenal okay that’s not good for John Sorry. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Come on. Are you saying Chelsea is not No, no, we don’t say that because we’ve done well against Chelsea. We were quite lucky to you’ve done well against Chelsea. But yes, I would say like city or Arsenal for me. Is it just the way they keep the ball? Is it the way they play? The way they play and it’s really hard. Like it’s really hard like I don’t know if you you faced that a lot during your career, but when you Oh, we used to beat Arsenal. Yeah. No, no, but I mean I mean um I mean like um you know when uh you just have to to run after the ball for like 90 minutes like it’s really really really hard and frustrated as well. So yeah, when you play against this kind of team, you you you need to to be um you need to condition yourself in your mind that you’re going to run today like so the toughest Crystal Palace, the best Arsenal City. Yes. Uh yeah. And the one I love I love to play against is Liverpool. Really? Yeah. I love to play against them. Really? It’s the same as you. I love to play against every Yeah. But like of course the top bigger team because we the smashers sometimes we can we can but it’s like because the way they play is like boom boom boom boom. It’s so open. So open. I was going to say that. So I love that you prefer playing against the bigger teams than the than the so-called smaller team. And there’s no small team in but those lesser team do you prefer playing against the bigger team because they’re so open but the small the the lesser team they come and they they they sit tight and they don’t give you that much space. Is that what you is that what you’re saying? Yeah. It’s easier. Yeah. Like not easier. It’s not easy. It’s never easy but it’s harder for me to to break like a solid and compact uh team you know who like really low you know. So yeah and I think like that’s why sometime like the big teams are struggling against us because yeah we we are really compact and low sometimes and uh yeah it’s really really hard you can counterattack them with yeah yeah that’s why because when it’s open then we we are more space uh you know and he’s quick I’m quick um Kevin is quick so you know uh it’s cuz I saw that when you played at Etihad this season you guys would have been what up in the first war how many minute you would have scored how many? Like two or three. Two or three. Two or three. Yeah, two or three. Um but that’s the that’s the level we need to to reach. If you want to give a big team, you got three three big big chance or good chance. Even good chance, bro. Yeah. Good good big chance. Opportunity, bro. I swear like you have two three opportunities. You have to score. You have to score. They have to score otherwise they come you they come after you and when they when they on it five but we see we see with the they were up two nil they was 3 side offside and after that game after this crazy 52 crazy who’s the who’s the best defender who’s the boy who’s the man that you just think oh my god not him again uh me it was uh it’s two actually and Silva really Silva You don’t like playing against him? There’s there’s two different players, huh? Yeah. There’s one is really really strong. Uh like he’s on you every time. Boom. Like you know you feel like so small when you and the one is clever. Silva is so clever. I don’t say like Van D is not clever, but Van Da is so clever. He’s always a step of you ahead of you. So your ball, you see the ball is coming to Oh no, he’s to him. Just the ball. Yeah. Honestly, he’s is so good. So good. Wow. What about you, Ryan? Me? Um, because I’m a winger, I would say, uh, Robinson from Fulham. Anthony Robinson. Yeah. He’s a good fight. Oh, he’s good. He’s a good fight. He’s good. Yeah. Yeah. And a great season. You know, I used to play I said this because I used to play against him when he was in Wigan and changed completely, you know, because um when he arrived, he was like really athletic, quick, but with his feet, he was like not so good, you know. Yeah. But throughout the years, he improved a lot. And I think now like he can do everything. He can attack, he can defend, he’s strong, he’s good with his with his feet now. And yeah, I think like really really hard to play against him. Amazing. I think we’ve kept you guys so long. We have. We’ve got a game to play. Can we play a game?
