Let’s talk about Norisring 2002.
(also, yes, i took the idea for the title from S1apSh0es)

  1. Fantastic video, I've never seen that race and I'll have to look it up! For a much newer pick of a great DTM battle i nominate Glock vs Paffet at Hockenheim 2018. Yes, maybe it was less "pure" DTM as there was DRS involved and the definition of touring car was stretched to its very limit, but it was still fantastic racing lap after lap.

That year Paffet would win the title and Mercedes-Benz would end its factory involvement in DTM, the beginning of the end for that era of the sport Paffet himself would move alongside Mercedes to Formula E but get poor results and his career would never be the same. The race would also be Glock's fifth and so far last DTM win, probably the best driving performance for a driver who's mainly remembered for a tire gamble in an iconic F1 race.

It Norisring 2002 was the peak of classic DTM, Hockenheim 2018 in retrospective feels like its swansong.

  2. 8:15 – that's not true sadly, as you can argue there was BOP involved – Audi was doing so poorly, both Mercedes and Opel agreed to allow ABT use looser rules on aero package due to how awful aerodynamics of Audi TT were.

Plus I'd argue that "reborn" DTM was far from what we usually refer as "touring cars". Only parts shared with road car were some of the defined proportions. These were advanced GT prototypes built around strict regulations limiting pretty much every aspect of a car without having any connection to a road car.

  3. DTM in the early 00s is the perfect grid of touring car legends. Some of DTM, BTCC, Le Mans and F1's best drivers of the 90s mixed with younger drivers that would become the best touring car drivers of the 00s

  4. i recently became really interested in DTM and found out that there aren't many videos about it on youtube, this one is great, thank you for this masterpiece
