Golf Getaway at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course – Back Nine

today on golf getaway the voice of Australian rugby Gordon Bray and I return for the back nine at the spectacular Nat andola Bay Championship Golf Course Andre staltz and I visit Cloud9 we get all muddy in a very unique water hazard and I learn what to do with an UPS slope in a bunker [Music] [Music] hi there I’m Andrew Miram mum and with me is the voice of Australian rugby Gordon Bray and welcome to golf getaway as we are now going to take you through the back nine of this magical Nat and DOA Bay Championship layout Nat and DOA Bay was designed by VJ Singh and is a 6566 M par 72 Championship Golf Course located here in the Fiji islands natola Bay is the epitome of the Fijian way of life with breathtakingly relaxed views of lush Fairways Meandering Hills coral reefs and rolling surf breakes but don’t be fooled it’s also a serious golf course and it’s the home of the Fiji International mirror we had a great front line but now we’re going to take on the magical journey and breathe in the seab breeze here on the back nine the 10th a 417 M Par Four another one a big long hole down to the ocean spectacular Outlook bunkers on the right bunkers on the left beautiful looking Fairways very Lush if you missed last week bit of a recap was a dingdong battle between the voice of Australian rugby Gordon Bray here I missed my birdie part on the last but I’m one up well I conceded the hole yes um half time you’re looking okay but there’s still a long way to go I’ve got to say Fiji for me it’s only 4 hours from Sydney and uh in the middle of winter here uh it’s not too bad you get the seab breeze lovely temperatures and even a really bad day in paradise is still pretty good at Nat andola well you’ve played here a few times yeah I enjoyed this course I’m going to be aiming to the right hand bunker where are you going oh I’ll go down the middle okay and he did too you after this money are you oh just leaking to the right but you got on to that [Music] wow well you really smoke that drive but uh you can toss this up into the wind it’s straight in your [Music] face leaking out to the right that’s a lovely shot tough shot that one Gordon oh he’s hit it well oh Mirror Mirror I know you’re in France but you got a birdie part here isn’t that view [Music] spectacular there you go nice roll nice roll you go oh that’s the two up then you going to give it to me yeah I’ll give it to you I mean the beauty of this course is that it’s very mild now there’s little or no wind okay we’re at the 12th it’s a 300 M par 4 and it’s the start of the signature holes on on the back nine beautiful looking hole Gordon yeah 300 M but there is a bit of a seab breeze at the moment conditions are quite mild now the pros in the Fiji International we’re hitting three four I or rescue um off the and you’ve got a driver here that’s pretty presumptuous 300 M it’s pretty close what I suggest though is if you’re a social golfer uh you get out early at naton Dollar then you can be back for a cocktail and a swim down at the Intercontinental that’s the way to go all right well let’s see who wins this one I’m going for a 4on here we go oh lovely shot course management to a tea there Gordon oh it’s fading wet and wild I think he’s just got to trickle down the bank and into the water oh he’s crunched it lovely shot well I got to say Mary you really smoked that 200 50 m into the breeze but uh I think the ego got in the way a bit there mate golf course management it’s not like me and uh honestly with your nice approach shot I think I can concede that H I think you can and there is a consolation um a little surprise over near the palm trees mirror come in here this is called This is called a golf ball feast and these are some of the land owners and we can buy some golf balls here these are the ones that you’ve actually lost during your round you mean you want me to pay for my golf balls that I’ve already lost absolutely it’s a it’s a nice way it’s very unique because you cannot buy golf balls from local people on the courses here in Fiji but because these are the land owners uh these youngsters are learning how to be good merchandises so we’ve got $20 how many will that give us uh for $20 is uh 12 balls 12 balls for 20 yes and there’s some near new balls there sounds good to me I’ll have 12 okay thank you do I choose what I want do I three three vaka vaka six and two more that’s itk you mirror it’s just a lovely way for the locals to subsidize their modest incomes and use them 12 balls for 20 bucks bye I thought I’d take a break from the golf you can never have too much golf but check out the view behind me hooked up with one of my golf buddies Andre stal I’ve been promising him for ages staly we got to go to fiji’s one of fiji’s best kept secrets it’s Cloud9 It’s 190 birth floating bar and restaurant about 50 minutes but from n andola by boat about 10 minutes by SE plane what I reckon stty right that’s enough I can’t wait any longer brother crazy he’s crazy Wally I feel like I’m on cloud n how did it all come about it all came about the idea was because we have nothing like this in the world obviously and this is first for Fiji and one of our directors Mr Daniel watel and his son barel watel thought of this idea and then we finally here and what can you do while you’re out here oh so many things as you can see the weather is beautiful the watera is beautiful you can do snotling diving water spots drinking eating relaxing and just Flo on cloud n that’s all and you got a surf Brak just s here yeah we have actually we have three surf brakes ofia we have Cloud break we have roral reef and Desperation and it’s a dolphin Sanctuary yes it is a dolphin Sanctuary actually every 3 months Dolphins come and give birth in this Lagoon it’s like a reef all around it’s trapped so they it’s safer for the Dolphins to come and give birth here so every 3 months you could see dolphins swimming around and I can have pizza we going to have a pizza today wood fire pizza oven is the best brother TR trust me plenty people have been coming here eating our pizzas never complain and what about the strength what’s that uh this is this is tropical this is something people really love when it’s hot sun it’s like mango fruy Fiji Fiji like this this is Fiji this is Fiji it is the best well we’re at Cloud n and it’s honestly got to be on everyone’s bucket list whether you play golf or not this has to be a once- in a-lifetime experience come on guys enjoy what Cloud9 has to offer you bro stty Cloud9 not a bad spot wow isn’t it been unbelievable one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been to just sitting out here floating on a pontoon out in the middle of nowhere is it the best 9th hole you’ve ever been to it’s pretty cool I didn’t lose ball out here either in this big water hazard but uh just been amazing great day the 13th it’s a 2011 M par three it’s long and it’s beautiful Gordon have you seen a more spectacular Golf Hall I’m sure when VJ Singh designed this particular hole he had Pebble Beach in mind you’ve got the world’s longest bunker here and those beautiful turquoise colors in the water I can’t wait to play this hole well spectacular golf hole but the fans are spectacular at rugby aren’t they they really are and I’ve got to say Fiji back in the 50s saved Australian Rugby Union they toured twice and they filled the coffers of Australian rugby financially so it was a time when Australia was down and out so thank you FG we love you well speaking of coffers it’s my turn to win some money back nearest the pin okay I’m I’m confident I can do it oh little left Gordon bunker oh gee that’s going to be Sandy as well we’re both in the bunker and near is the pins go to Jackpot at least you’re out sh mirror long path three that was a tough hole but that was a magnificent bunker shot this is for the win thank you and there’s a bit of borrow here mate it’s all about Pace oh how good is this boy I’ll let you borrow some of my ping skills eh yeah you can teach me a thing or two [Music] oh nice [Music] shot a lovely P hey well done well done so what that makes us all square I think we back to square the square the 16th is a 344 M uphill par 4 it’s a little bit like Jurassic Park got a lake in front of us we’ got volcanic rock up on the left and right and an elevated green So It’s Tricky speaking of tricky you you’re the voice of Australian rugby but you apparently used to be the voice of Australian golf uh in my own lunchtime I think no over the last 40 years I’ve probably covered a lot of golf but the most exciting Adventure I think was swinging through Ireland where we made a special for the ABC and this is something that golf getaway needs to look at very seriously we played L hinch where the wild goats if you see them around the clubhouse that means you don’t go out to play because wild weather is on the way and also Royal Port rush in Northern Island where Peter Thompson won one of his five British Open so it’s a wonderful country a must for golf getaway sounds like he’s trying to take my job let’s see how we go [Music] here I’ll take that oh lovely shot well played how about that shot Gordon off the rocks on the far side bounced off these rocks just short of the bunker felt like I was playing pinball well now you can uh play like Buzz Aldren pretend you’re on the [Music] moon that one’s defied gravity [Music] how does n and DOA compared to the grassy green emerald Links of Ireland well in Ireland of course like Le hint you have lots of grassy mounds and NS and blind par 3s where the course superintendent has to place a white stone on the mound so you know where the actual pin is but here this is a total contrast you’ve got lots of hills and mounds but it’s very tropical you have the organic rock you have the palm trees you have the wind you have the reef you have the surf you have the seab breeze what more could you ask for it’s a tropical Feast okay here we go oh he’s skimmed it you can have that one okay well played well miror here we are at the legendary Tiff hot springs and mud pools it’s famous for its healing powers and after all the golf this week you’ve been stressing me out we’re here at the base of the beautiful uh Sleeping Giant just outside nandy it’s uh time to get key to show us around and uh get let’s get mudy eh oh those one PS mate they’re killing me key staly tells me I’m really stressing him out the hot springs are going to help me when did they all begin okay the main source of hot spring is found in 1940 to 1945 and that was found by the US Souls during the second world war but when the solder they get out they found it’s 100° C hot but that’s where can cook for and it because we didn’t have source of light like metes electricity now we have it and then we started to go for but the temperature started to drop down to 70 because we have two mouth open one here one right next door so in here you don’t going in or you don’t have bath in it because once you go in here it’ll be cooked like acent okay but from here we’ll go straight to have a bath how does the mud pool work K okay uh the mud pool is like you have to C the mud into your body so the only things the mud works it’s like exfoliate or moving of dead skin in the body and in the other side it’s also open the pores of the skin when it’s dry but because they are two minerals that are present it which is magnesium and sulfur and then we stand in the Sun for about 10 to 15 minutes we’ll wait for skin to dry and then you go here like wash off reach it off and then you have to go for hard bath later but in my own say that it look like a 10 years younger when you go back in here st’s going to love that ha he might be well Mira what do you think of the Tiff ja hot springs and mudpool brother oh I loved it very relaxing we don’t need to play golf this afternoon do we I hope not let’s see cool this tip from the pro brought to you by golf University bunker on an up slope what are we going to do about that okay well Andrew this one’s a bit funny obviously you can see how much of a severe slope we’re on now a lot of people I see have a lot of problems with being on such a severe UPS slope the ball goes straight up in the air and lands pretty close here so this is a great one for when the flag’s a long way away so this is going to scare people but I’m going to use a 9 on out out of the bunker here and it’s going to be exactly like a normal bunker shot so basically we’re digging our feet in again and we’re going to take about a footprint size divot off the up slope and then just as I say just hit a normal shot there and you see how that sort of flies like the normal trajectory of a normal bunker shot so it’s great for when the flag’s a long way away so again main thing don’t be afraid to use um I’d probably go up to about an Adon Andrew you know probably no more than that but off an up slope try it out at home it works TV the 18th it’s a 426 M 4 and it’s got to be one of the best finishing holes in golf we hit straight up the hill to the buay kalat that’s that tall building up there in the center of the four the one on the left is the chief’s house and the bur Cola is where the chief would go and pray to his Gods amazing hul Gordon well the whole Nat and dollar Bay experience is is very cultural the people here in Fiji are very religious they have their daily prayers and here on the golf course all of the workers are indigenous fijians and you have the villages living around the course they the land owners and they’re actually opening up residential lots to the public so it’s going to be a holiday getaway wow it’s all going down to the wire all square Wonder place and let’s see if mirror has been saying his prayers oh my goodness me the gods are smiling on you [Music] baby love [Music] shot miror you’re all over the flag stick you like putting for birdie we’re both putting for birdies Winner Takes all green and red Gordon for the birdie andoss win oh he’s done short Andrew Mira mcum the weight of the golf BL is slow on his not so young shoulders and he’s done it he’s done it well done the All Blacks for got it yeah well done yeah now I can’t complain there thanks for showing me around Net and DOA it took a birdie to do it mate Gordon Nat and doar Bay what a great golf course what do you think of it it’s an ultimate golfing experience I think a stunning uh layout you have a beautiful Clubhouse here and what about the setting um it’s right up there with anything I’ve seen anywhere in the world well you look up fij in the dictionary you’re certainly going to see Nat and doler aren’t you you are and uh the staff are to be credited they have beautifully maintained the course the fairways so well manicured and the greens are top class and VJ saying what a job he’s done there’s a little bit of uh courses around the world here aren’t there every particular hole has its character and its own personality and there’s a challenge there every time you step onto the tea are you coming back am I coming back to pigs like mud well here’s tet and DOA Bay well done what a great day out good luck yeah well there it is I’m Andrew Miram mum and I’m Gordon Bray and thanks for watching golf getaway here at this Jewel of the South Pacific neton dollar Bay for more videos special offers and information go to golf getaway.com Au or like us at facebook.com for/ golf getaway TV and Mira thank you very much for this golfing heaven on Earth experience it’s been sensational [Music] [Music]
