Many amateurs have trouble escaping from bunkers, never mind hitting it close, because they hit the sand too far behind the ball. In the fifth Paddy’s Golf Tips video of a new series about how you can teach yourself, I discuss playing shots from the sand. I offer an effective practise drill to help the club enter the sand close to the ball, offer advice on the set-up and explain the importance of swinging “over the top” and getting steep. In addition, I explain the different ways of playing from an upslope, downslope and from the dreaded plugged lie!

  1. What a guy paddy is man! Would love some putting stuff like distance control, start line etc paddy just has a way of explaining things that resonate!

  2. It appeared you played most shots in the center of your stance and your sternum was not over the ball as you mentioned (appeared closer to target). Was that due to the camera angle?

  3. What tips for fairway bunker shots please? I seem to always hit them fat! Great lessons as always 👍

  4. Brilliant stuff. Been working on my short game over the last couple of months. And this lesson will help me out even more. Paddy any chance of doing a fairway wood video.

  5. Amazingly i seem to have taught my 26 hcp a guaranteed get out bunker shot! ok as long as its a reasonable lie and good sand
1 wriggle feet into sand this will naturally get club to enter sand just b4 ball
2 Dont open clubface! but think bottom of clubhead ie bounce not leading edge hear/feel the thump!
3 Finish forward and up with the chest more like a drive than a chip ie solid body action not fast hands, be a bulldozer!
4 be happy with a get out shot ie find your natural get out shot it might be a carry of 5,10, or 15 yds most of the time whatever your natural carry is, from a greenside bunker you will be at least within 2 putts zone

  6. Another great video. You make things so clear. Would love to see a video on hitting fairway woods. Struggle topping it

  7. Great videos as normal Padraig… however why is every bunker video out there about green side, please could you do a pros view of fairway bunker shots, I’m a very good bunker player green side but struggle from fairway ones. Soon as I have to hover the club I struggle with getting a good contact ? Regards.

  8. Great video! I can’t remember if you have one for fairway bunkers, but if not, maybe one in the future? I ask because size since you can’t ground the club, I find it messes with my low point when I swing. Maybe it’s in my head or maybe I’m doing something else wrong.

  9. My problem with bunker shots is that I hit the ball before the sand, and hit the ball over the green. Help!
