Kevin De Bruyne marked his penultimate Etihad appearance by scoring the only goal to clinch a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolves and so move City up into third in the Premier League and a step closer to a Champions League spot.

The Belgian – who will leave City this summer after a decade’s wonderful service – struck on 35 minutes to settle what was an absorbing and fiercely fought Friday night encounter.

The visitors, who had arrived at the Etihad on the back of six straight league wins made Pep Guardiola’s side fight all the way.

And they twice hit the woodwork through Rayan Alt-Nouri and Matheus Cunha either side of the break.

But thanks to De Bruyne’s strike – which made it 250 career goal involvements under Guardiola – City held firm to make it four Premier League wins in a row and so leapfrog Newcastle into third place in the table

[Applause] There’s a gap opening up and Belgard has gone into it and he’s not offside either and he’s got Monetsi to the left. Oh my goodness, how did that not go in? Belgard. Well, it just wasn’t a good enough pass and City survive. Mike Nory, Matias Kuna, the two danger men. And I nory hits the post and then it’s off the line by Guardio and then Semido shot is blocked by O’Reilly. Well, Wolves could and maybe should have been one or maybe even two clear. Now he’s looking to have a go. O’Reilly good chance. Deflects away. That’s the first opening for City and offers them encouragement. Now Don always looks the most dangerous and back it goes to Bru. First attempt on target and after those scares early on. It’s City who hit the front and of course it had to be KDB still writing headlines, still making the difference and putting City in front. [Applause] It’s not a bad ball either. Matias Kuna is on to it. Whenever he gets the ball, he seems to offer threats and he’s hit the post and that’s the second time that City’s woodwork has been rattled and it stays at 1 n. They’ve done it. They’ve got over the line. It doesn’t matter how. It’s just that you do. And KDB takes City up to third.
