So, your first hundred hours of the year looking up golf tips have probably gone something like this. Click on a video, try a new move. Click on a video, try a new move. Click on a video, try a new move. You did that about 100 times. And then you end up in this weird yarn, rubber band ball of confusion. At which point, you landed on this video. And I’m so glad that you did because what you’re about to learn is how to undo all the confusion and put the golf swing into two simple moves. And I want you to get this idea of the golf swing being a pull in the back swing and a push in the down swing. The back swing is a pull. Both arms out in front of you and then just move the arms away from you around your body. Keep moving the arms until your shoulder gets under your chin. The only way you can do this is if your hips are turning. So while you’re doing this, why don’t you add in the element of straightening the trail leg? Boom. Now, the beauty of this, when we tilt over towards the ground, you’re going to get the sensation of a pull. So, you imagine that you’ve got a lawn mower cord right here. And I want to pull that cord up and behind me, keeping both arms as straight as possible. If you break down your arms, then it won’t work. The machine stops. The shoulders don’t turn. The body stops. That’s just a whole load of problems. It’s going to put you right back in the confusion that got you here. So, you’re going to take that cord. I’m going to pull it up and behind me into an area above my right ear. And if you want to know exactly where that is for you, you extend your right arm, your trail arm if you’re right-handed player. You lift it up about 45 degrees. That’s where it should be. Draw a circle. Paint that circle. That’s your goal, your mission zone. Pull that cord. Hands into that circle. Yay. Hey. Yay. Like those people in Monty Python. Yay. Yay. So, once you’ve got there, that’s the back swing. Now, one little tweak because we’re not gripping the club like this. No, we grip the club in such a way that’s kind of like a hockey stick. Your trail hand, your right hand if you’re a right-hand player, must be under. And gripping the club like a hockey stick. You see my my left hand’s pointing at the ground. begin the process of pulling the lawn mower up to that same spot. My lawn mower will only start if I pull the cord the whole way. If I break down my arms, you won’t be able to pull a cord that way. You must pull it d. And when you do this, your shoulders turn a ton. Your chest is open to the sky, which means your body’s working, your hips are turning, everything. Everything’s working. You don’t have to think about it. So, ditch about 79 of the videos that you’ve already watched. We’ve already covered takeaway right now. Boom. Perfect takeaway. Boom. Perfect. Top of back swing. This is the position the pros get into. So, now that we’re here, the only thing I need to do now is connect my arm to my body. So when I connect my arm, I just have it resting on top of my chest and I got my elbows close together. So we’re connecting the arms and we’re feeling now the grip. Starting here, pull that lawnmower cord up to that position. You’re going to see the trail arm folds to store power. You’re going to see the club travels up the right amount. It’s on plane. All because of a simple pull down swing. This is where it gets really fun. I love this part because you’re just going to send it. Everybody will tell you different moves to start the down swing, but we don’t need to think about moves because the push does those moves. Push. Hips have turned. Push. My hips have moved towards the target laterally as well. Gone. There goes 11 other thoughts. Maybe 1100 other thoughts. So when we push, the objective is around your body, around your body, level in this sense. We’re going level first to feel this shoulders around shoulders around and you’re pushing out in front of you. Pull, push, pull, push, pull it back, push it through. If this helps you visualize the pull, I’m moving a cement block back and then I’m pushing it through with a club in my hands. It’s the same thing. pull it back up and then push it through. We just have to add tilt to the ground now. So, I’m tilted to the ground, pulling it back, and then I’m going to move this target word push, not dropping. Most will want to do this. That’s habit. Old habit. We get that. kill that habit. Just push it through. But you can feel the pushing action right here. You might say, “Tom, but yeah, but if I push I’m going to push over the top. I’m going to push over the top. I’m worried about that. I don’t want to do that.” No, you won’t do it if your hand stays under. I didn’t say push the hand over, did I? No. That’s different than the shoulder. I can push the shoulder through while keeping the hand under. Aha. hand under and out. Pull back. Push. Push. Push. I’m still pushing. Push. Boom. Now, that pushing is going to eventually score the club. Don’t think about the club face. It’s already going to happen. So, when you start hitting shots, now we got to pull. We got to push. Two simple moves. Pull. Push. Delicious. Pull. Push. Delish. Comment that below if you have made it to this part of the video. By the way, I show you how to do this exactly in my become a great ball striker course. It’s a simple program to get you in the world of great ball striking and out of the world of confusion. I got a link to that in the comments in the description below. So, I would love to see you in there. So, I’m pulling and I’m pushing and as long as I get the arm tucked in, I’m pushing and the the shaft stays shallow. The golf swing’s taken care of. So push and that when you push, I’m not pushing with the lower. I’m not pushing with the chest. I am pushing with the shoulders. Really hone in on pull, push, shoulder move, because everything else revolves around it. If my push is a down move, I’m done. If my push is a target move, I’m good. Push it. Push it real good. Push. Pull. Push. Pull. Push. Don’t spend time trying to figure out the swing, especially when there’s so many conflicting things out there. You just need to learn to do basic movements and then translate that to with a club. So, don’t fret. Just go out and think about a simple pull push and it’s going to put your entire swing together and life will be great. Life is too short to play bad golf. So play the best golf your life right now. I think the quick hockey stick grip reference drives home the rotation movement more than anything. Great info Tom.

I wish this stuff would work, but it's not. This has been a complete struggle trying to get something to stick. I follow what you say to the letter and still poor results. I adhere to tucking my elbow in,weight forward, etc etc. I wish I could take lessons, but not having online lessons readily available really hurts. I am a loyal subscriber, but I don't understand where I am going wrong.
The swing that works for you is the swing that feels like there’s no excessive effort to swing the club. If your doing a near full follow through on a full swing then your loading up correctly.
If you pass a object to another person, you move your arms and the body naturally follows and that’s how the swing should be
It seems that your right arm is in the backswing away from your chest, also in the downswing. No pushing against the upper chest. Is this right?
Signed up for the online golf school a few weeks ago and feel like I have the setup and backswing down. This video really helped I’ve been struggling with the downswing but the keeping the trail hand underneath feel helps, going to take it to the range today.
Super video Tom as always, you're the master of easy instruction. I've implemented pretty much everything you've taught me and my handicap has reduced by 8 shots. I'm going to use this lesson to get it down even further. Off to Portugal next week for 5 days of golf with 11 mates for my 60th. Let you know how it goes.
Finally got the stack and tilt working with my irons. Had to make a small grip adjustment. I’m hitting fades though. Not sure why, but I’ll take it. Lol
Isn’t the first (and only?) move on the downswing to straighten your left knee sliding your hips forward. Doesn’t it all follow from there. Thanks
Thank you Tom for your lessons n tips
For me…your best video yet!!!
I'm watching this awesome summation from Tommy Sagutes everyday!! Brilliant Tom, Brilliant!🎉🎉🎉
i started doing this last month and dropped 7 shots over my game , its a simple machine that just works
I am a natural lefty who golfs with RH clubs so my equivalent action is push back/ pull forward. Seems to work.
Unfortunately you are assuming a level of flexibility that a lot of people dont have.
