A lot of golfers struggle with hip rotation—especially in the downswing. But what if the real key wasn’t trying to “turn more”… …but learning how to use your lead leg the right way?
In this video, you’ll see an LPGA Tour player doing something most amateurs overlook: She creates powerful rotation by extending her left leg at just the right moment.
Here’s how it works:
From the top of the backswing (position 4), she goes into a slight squat. That helps load the ground—and as the weight shifts to the lead side, something crucial happens:
Between position 5 and 6, the left leg begins to push up. That extension helps the hips clear—creating space for the arms and club to swing through. It also adds serious speed, even without swinging harder.
Now here’s how you can feel it right away:
Stand up. Grab a club. Set up in your golf posture and make a backswing. Then shift your weight onto your lead (left) foot. As you start your downswing, pay attention to position 6—when your club shaft is parallel to the ground. From there, begin extending your left leg. Feel how your hip starts to rotate and get out of the way. Notice how that movement creates space—and momentum—for your swing to come through.
It’s a powerful move. And once it’s in your system, you won’t want to swing any other way.
