A big part of generating swing speed is lag. Most average players have little to none yet all pros have it. When I talk about lag to my students most don’t even know why the club lags. If you don’t understand it how can you ever do it?

So watch this tip and understand the simplicity of lag. It should become crystal clear how to get it. Once you get lag you will generate way more clubhead speed resulting in way more distance.

In this tip, I’m just going to explain what lag is. Okay? So, everybody wants this lag. I got other tips. Show you how to get perfect lag in literally 2 minutes. Okay? But I want people to understand a little bit about lag. So, I got this head cover here that will explain it to you. Okay? So, first off, ask yourself, what does the word lag mean? Lag means something is trailing behind something else. It’s that simple. It’s lagging behind something. All right. In a golf swing, your club is lagging behind your body. Body starts, club lags behind, which gives you this right here, this angle, which creates more release or faster release or more release, which would give you more club head speed and more distance, of course. Okay? So, something is trailing behind something else. All right? So if I had a head cover here like this and I went to twirl this, what would be happening? Would it would the head cover part go like this? Okay, like this. This is your golf club right here. This is your arms. This is your body. So if you go like this, guess what? No lag. If you keep trying to move that club, no lag. All you have to do is not move the club. Don’t do anything with your arms. Okay? Okay, if you go like this, see my hand is twirling and it’s one step ahead of that head cover. That’s why it’s suspended in midair. This is lagging behind this. Okay, in your golf swing, you’re up here. This is the stiff part of the head cover, flexible part. That’s your hand. If you’re up here, I need you to turn your body before you move the golf club. If you do, that’ll compress this angle and create the lag. All right. This this stuff is just so unbelievably simple. But you know, we got to understand why we’re not doing it. Well, most people don’t have lag because they keep trying to whack the ball with their arms. Okay, up here like this. There’s a ball right here. Right here. So, you’re looking at an object. Your brain is saying, “I’m going to hit that ball as hard as I can.” That’s human nature. Hit it hard. Harder I hit it, farther it goes. True. Better way to do it though. Goes way farther and you’re not hitting anything because we’re going to create that lag. So up here like this instead of pulling this down trying to hit that golf ball. Why not just do nothing? Okay, so we’re up here like this. Arms are just nice and relaxed. Remember the head cover that I just twirled? You’re trying to move this. You’re going to do that with your legs and hips. So right here, just start thinking about turning your legs and hips. Okay, the club will follow and you’ll get lag. Okay, that coupled with my other tip, which I’ll post up here, that gets you lag, perfect lag in two minutes, you’ll be on your way to start releasing the golf club, getting way more club head speed. And it’s important that you get this now because as you get older, you get weaker. So, if you’re just whacking away at it as hard as you can, you will literally hit the ball nowhere when you get older. And I am not kidding. This is what I see on a daily basis. people hit the ball literally nowhere. Okay? So, that’s because they they’re doing it with brute force or physical strength. Yet, a 12-year-old can hit it by you. So, if a weak kid can hit the ball a long way, they’re doing it a different way. They’re not they don’t have no arm strength or minimal arm strength. They have to do it somehow. So, start turning your arms off. Think about the head cover. Hit the top of your back swing like this. And just say to yourself right here, “Hey, you know what? I’m gonna try turning my hips.” Instead of, “I’m gonna whack the ball.” See, different thought. Think a little bit differently. You’ll start to make the changes and then you’ll have them in your swing. Okay? You keep doing the same thing, you’re going to keep getting the same result. I truly hope you’ve enjoyed this tip. 1. Your comment about the 12-year-old was a light bulb moment; I was on the range yesterday and there was a kid next to me smoking it and I was wondering how the hell he did it – now I know, just nice and relaxed….. and a good deal more flexible than me!

  2. Lag, and shaft lean are chasing down the rabbit hole..when I was an Assistant Pro, I had students that always asked about that 'cause they saw it in Golf Digest, and I would say "Why don't we get Grip, Stance, Posture, Alignment, and let that take care of itself " Thanks for keeping it simple Paul…

  3. Thanks Paul. Your a total stud. There's noone like on YouTube. Love everything that your doing to help us all the time

  4. It's one of those that when you get it you know you got it. Or contrariwise if you try to get it you won't get it, as it a natural consequence of proper sequencing, and motion. It is one of things you just have to feel. Soft, relaxed, smooth. Although I feel like I can apply power through the downswing. though I'm not sure quite how to describe what I am feeling. But it's like this is perfect and will put a bit more into it, like stepping not stomping on the acclerator.
Hitting the ball into unfamiliar positions, closer to the green, which is a weird side effect of better driving.

  5. Good video Paul… I’m sticking with A to B😅 worked great at the range, pitching, chipping, even putting. It takes away the hit instinct and deceleration. 👍

  6. Hey Paul, I noticed that in my practice swing I have tons of lag but the clubface is wide open by the time I get to where the ball would be. As a consequence, in my real swing I am casting to square the clubface. I am having a really hard time fixing this for good because I have associated a very cupped wrist with the creation of lag. Could you tell me how I can create this lag without a super cupped wrist and wide open clubface?

  7. Had my second game incorporating Paul's swing methods. I'm 53 and fairly inflexible. Finally had a couple of games without any back pain. Fairway woods were arrow straight. Still working on ball positions for irons and I have to say, the "hit" instinct is VERY HARD to break. Thanks Paul – a swing I can take to the course for the next few decades!
