Spring has not been kind to me and the good days one could play golf, were those days I was surprisingly busy. But finally I got the old clubs out, cleaned the golf balls, found a few tees and I went out to play my first round of golf of 2025. It was not pretty. No one’s first outing is pretty. Here are a few of my thoughts after playing a few holes.
There were four of us and one of my buddies told me when I hit the ball way to the left, he said, “John, you hooked it.” Later I hit my ball way to the right and he quipped that I sliced it. This was upsetting to me so I finally asked him what would happen if I hit right smack down the middle. He replied, “I’d call it a miracle.”
After reading golf magazines all winter hoping for some positive changes, I realized once again that leaving your putts short of the hole STILL DO NOT GO IN.
I found out that being a year older, my drives were about twenty yards shorter than last year, but that’s ok because I’m now twenty pounds heavier. Evens out.
My golfing buddy gave me some “sage” advice, “John” he said, “You’re standing too close to the ball……………AFTER YOU HIT IT.” Grrrrrrr!
To be a decent golfer, one tries to shoot his age for 18 holes. I’m 73 and I was able to do it in 12 holes!!! Okay, to be honest, 10 holes!
Par three holes are supposed to be shorter and easier holes. However the par three’s I played were neither shorter or easier. They seemed much longer than last year. And harder!!
My wife, Deb, asked me if I was playing golf with Bruce. I laughed and said, “Honey, would you want to play golf with someone who swears constantly, throws his clubs often and cheats on just about every hole.” Deb said that no way would she like that. I said, “Well, neither does Bruce.”
I don’t know if anyone out there in Tama-Toledo & surrounding areas are golfers, but let’s line up a couple foursomes this year and play 18. I promise to behave! Maybe! Let me know who’s interested at johndebsheda@gmail.com or call me at 319.327.4640. Notice my new email address. FORE!!
