In today’s live lesson, we got Devon from hitting it high, weak, and right to hitting these beautiful high draws with amazing distance. And we did it with one simple drill, which is used by one of the best players in the world. So, if you want to get the golf club on plane and you want to strike it more out the center of the golf club, then you need to watch this lesson. There it is. There’s that miss. There’s that miss. Okay. So, let’s look at this golf swing. So, look, we know that that heel strike for me is causing a big problem because you actually swing it really nicely, but for me, it looks like you’re a little bit cramped when you’re hitting shots, but we can see this when you actually swing back. So, down the line, again, loads of great things, but I’m just going to show you what we perhaps need to work at today. Club goes a little bit under plane. That’s something to think on. We may want to look at that in the future. Okay. But as you start the down swing, we can see that that lower body is incredibly active. It really does fire aggressively. Lots of rotation. And you can see your hips are almost square at that point there. Yeah. The club has hardly got past the shoulder and your hips are already flying. But notice the club shaft as well. It’s quite steep, right? So the club shaft from here is coming in from above the shoulder with a lot of hip rotation. By the time you get to here, you do a really good job of getting the club nearer the plane. But because of the amount of hip rotation, hip rotation and torso rotation, that club eventually has to spin out above the plane ever so slightly. And this is where those heel strikes come from because you’re working that hard with rotation. You’re forcing the club out in front of you. And that’s where these heel strikes are coming from. Okay. So, we know you got high speed. You can swing it at over 115 mph. But your lower body for sure at the moment is just going out of sequence. I almost need to slow this down. Okay? Which is sounds crazy for the majority of people watching this. They’re thinking, “Oh, I want to get more speed in my hips. I want to hit the ball a long way.” Well, those ingredients are there. You’ve got the speed. We now need to see if we can coordinate it. Okay. So, the way we’re gonna do this, we’re actually gonna do it two ways. We’ve got a drill we’re gonna give you. All right. Which is actually a drill that Justin Rose uses. Good timing. Just came second in the Masters. But we’re also going to use live practice. So, we’re actually going to use our Mir My Golf app to show you how you can train this. I asked you before whether you actually like practicing in front of a mirror and you told me that you’ve just bought a 7 foot mirror so I can practice at home. Okay. So, that’s exactly what we’re going to do by using this here. So, this is why I wanted to do this. Okay. We’ll show you the drill and then we will uh then we’ll get the live practice working. So set up for me. I just want to go through your swing though still. So swing to the top of your back swing. Stop. So we know from here that you’re really fast with those hips. So go fast with the hips for me. This throws the club a little bit steep as we can see here. And then from there you continue to rotate. You somehow get the club back near the plane. But then you kind of lose space. You’re probably feeling very cramped now. And that club just pokes out in front and that’s what’s causing. So when it’s moving that way last minute, it’s going to cause that heel strike. Okay. So this is the Justin Rose drill. From here, I want you to feel as though you keep you don’t rotate your body. Now give me a slight bump towards the target. Beautiful. And then from there, the it’s almost like your left bicep is going to run down your pec. So see, feel how much more shallow the golf club is here now. Now from here, now rotate. Now hopefully when you’re doing this, you’ll feel like you have a lot more room when you’re doing this. A lot more. So, and it’s amazing how well you actually do move your body. And we we spoke about this off camera, but actually Devon’s a disabled vet and there’s there’s a there’s serious amount of injuries, especially in that left leg that are going on, but you wouldn’t really see it when it comes to this. But the one thing you did mention was just the the learning and linking the brain to to actually learning the new movements. Exactly. Yeah. This is why we want to do it slow in this instance, but we don’t want to keep it slow forever. I want to make sure that it’s yes, it might be slow to start with, but then we really then start ramping up the speed. Okay. Okay. So, this is the uh this is the MIG app. So, all I’ve done is I’ve put this when I’m looking at this camera here, I’m just going to put it as hand height, okay? Parallel to your target line. I’m going to get the plane line, draw it in. So, the plane line goes from the heel of the golf club underneath the right elbow. So, what I want you to do now is swing to the top and stop. Good. And then from there, bump slightly and then let the arms drop down. Let them drop down. Let them drop down wide. Now, look where you are now. Right. So much lower. So much lower. And definitely more from a a shallower point of view. And now from here, you might go, well, if I’m here, I’m going to hook it. Well, yeah, if you stay here, you will hook it. So, what you need to do now is you now need to rotate. And then you’ll and and the rotation is what’s going to put the club back on plane and put the club back on track. Okay, that makes sense. Yeah, a lot of sense. Nice. Beautiful. If we think about that as far as a shape is concerned. Yeah, that’s beautiful. So at least we know now what your drill is. We know that you should do this a lot. There’s enough evidence to say this is really good for you. But now we want to see in a minute what it’s like when we put the speed back into it. Okay, good. That was probably a little harder than we wanted, but that’s still okay. Okay, so we’ve just changed that up. We’re going to put a little bit more speed into these now. Okay, but I want you to hit it 200 yards with the feeling of just getting arms down. Okay. Okay. Nice. Very good. The attack angle on that was 4.8 up. Okay. That’s crazy, isn’t it? Yeah. Okay. Let’s go 220. Okay. Let’s ramp it up a little bit more. That’s just beautiful. So good. Yeah. I love that. Again, attack angle. That’s going to be really good. Yeah. Okay. What we’re going to do now, we’re actually going to go up another level. So, let’s go. Let’s go 250 plus now. Let’s start ramping up the speed. But I just want you to think about arms only in your down swing. Let’s get you into some of those. And by the way, if you’ve got any questions about your game, don’t forget this channel is all about getting you better at golf. Let us know down below in the comments. I’m excited. This could be really good. Oh my goodness. All right. Beautiful. That’s really good. So, just uh just a 272 yards with a soft swing. Let’s go normal full out. Okay. What you would do normally. There we go. Holy crap. Okay, now we’re running out of range. The guy on the other side running out of range. So now we’re at a point. Okay, come and look at this one here, Alli. Come and look at this. We actually can’t hit any more drives, you know? That’s the problem. So 294 yards carry, 116 club speed, hitting up on it, 2.5°. That white one there is the one that we’ve just done. So now we literally can’t hit any more balls because we’re out of range room. Um, unless All right, so we’ve obviously run out of room on the driving range. How often does this happen? So, we’re on the 16th hole now. We’re going to let Devin go full out with his driver. See what it does. And I’ve got this theory still that there might be something extra we still need to do in the club selection. So, let’s just hit some 16th hole par five. So, we can’t run out of room here. So, here’s what I’m thinking. That’s really good. It’s a high draw, but it’s a little bit further left than we would like. Right. So, my thought on this is my driver, for example, has been set up to take out the left side of the golf course. So, GT3 B1, which means it’s a little bit flatter. The face is a little bit more open. I’ve got T2 in the weight here. So, I’ve moved all of the weight into the toe area. This is extreme. Don’t go left. I want to see what happens when you hit this. Okay, that is so flipping good. Alli’s laughing behind the Osmo there cuz of how good that is. Does it make sense that ultimately what we’ve done is we’ve got to now got a golf club that isn’t going to want the face pointing left as much. Exactly. Giving you freedom now to hit it hard. So, the best thing for me, not just the the better ball flight and everything, but I don’t feel it in my back. Before, when I was trying to do that with my other club and the old swing habits, I was tilting up, causing that pain in my lower back, and now I can swing as hard as I want, and I don’t feel that pain cuz it’s just more natural. I love that. And if we look at the two comparisons and the swings now, we can actually see before, as you say, it was a little bit of a steepness of the shaft. There’s a lot of rotation, which is causing you to get stuck and ultimately going to start crunching that back. Now we can see the club is being delivered a lot shallower, a lot nearer the plane. In fact, getting underneath the plane now, which is fine for the moment, but the club is going to be able to move through there a lot more. You’re nowhere near as cramped, and you’re definitely getting it more out of the center. Exactly. Yeah, that is amazing. Now, if you want to get a little bit more from myself and Andy, who’s obviously not here today, um what can you do? Well, we coach here at the Grand. We do golf schools at the Grand. 2. First , Devon thank you for your brave and heroic service ! Second , great lesson ! It's almost similar to the old school " bump, dump, and turn."

  3. Why does this not work for me?! 😫 I have way too many swing thoughts right now (dropping the hands, keeping back towards target for longer, “pinching” right side of hip) I just can not stop a left to right driver shot. Oh and I cannot get very high in my back swing, the joys of golf…

  4. Great lesson and very relevant drill for where I’m currently at with my swing. Problem is converting the feeling of dropping it down with a practice / broken swing, then actually converting that to a full swing. Practice I understand and get the feeling, just struggle converting the two

  5. Great lesson. Was always taught that the driver swing worked from the bottom up – but this variation makes total sense. I have recently been hitting some high weak fades so will definitely try this approach. I'm also hoping it will encourage a more consistent tempo – slow arms then fast hips through the strike zone. Thank you Piers!

  6. The proof is in the putting ,err pudding..?what ever the word is …i can see the results ….i can see”it” when he was drilling the new swing slower …but when u played the side by side old vs new swing , i maybe briefly saw a small difference early in the take away . But as the clubhead delivered to the ball my idiot eyes saw little to no difference ….i just came from the range and i had 2 new sets of irons : brand new takomo 201’s setup to me via their online fitting tool and: couple year old callaway maveriks stock… when i connected with the new takomos it was a beautiful flight but that level of perfect “connection “was a crap shoot where the maveriks minimally 3 outs 4 flew great …. And i know lofts are strong on the maveriks which is why i was minimally a club further distance in about every club ..i need to understand what little mistake im making from one shot to the next (sort of how you picked his one out here)if i ever plan on using the $700 fitted takomos ..because right now the stock used $450 callaways are so good for my swing , high long and more accurate ,and i was moving it left and right too(not always on purpose 😂)… i never heard of maveriks until i searched how to spend my return credit from global golf ..but theyre miles better than the TM Qi’s i had last season at half the price … also i really wanted to love those 201’s being my first sort of fitted new clubs that are forged .but again the proof is in the putting/pudding 🤷🏼‍♂️..gotta not,pay attention to look of the clubs only the flight …thpught i was beyond game improvement irons but apparently not lol ..

  7. Glad to see you are teaching more of an arm swing and getting away from the rotate body hard nonsense. Well done mate.

  8. Well, it is said that when we throw a ball we move the left side etc. to get into position to throw the right arm thru. But, that is not actually correct. The muscles in the left side of the right arm flex; and, this triggers the movement of the left side. But, this does tell us that it is a fault to lead with the left side in the downswing. And, really there is no way that the left side can take control if the muscles in the left side of the right forearm are active. And, if the left hand presses against the right hand in the transition, the muscles in the left side of the right forearm will be active. But, as a drill, if you swing with just your right arm- no club- stop at the top; and, then start down by activating the muscles in the left side of your right forearm, you will find that your left side will turn to the left; and, that the movement will be in sync with your arm.

  9. I tried so many drills to fix my driver and this is the only one that has resonated with me since watching this video. Practiced the drill for a week and it has transformed my club speed, driving accuracy and distance, which has increased 15-20 yards. I was driving the ball 290-300 yard carry during my fitting yesterday, I have never driven that far before. Thanks Piers for the great tip!
