Torquefree and low torque putters and zero torque putters are all the rage these days and everybody thinks that it was started by Lab Golf in 2018. But I’m going to surprise you and tell you the truth is Lab Golf was almost 100 years late to the reduced torque party. In this video, we’re going to talk about what torque is and why it matters in your putter. the history of reduced torque, low torque, and zero torque putters. And finally, some key takeaways that’ll actually improve your golf game and help you make more putts. [Music] Before we talk about what torque is and why it matters, let me give you a key concept in putting and that is you have to keep this putter face square to your target line in this five in immediately behind the ball. If you can have your putter face square here, you can roll the ball straight up your target line. And if you’ve read the green correctly and aimed it correctly on that right target line, it goes in the hole. And the reduced torque and torque free phenomenon is all about making it easier for you to keep the putter face square in those five inches. You see, if you think about it, a putter is actually a weight on the end of a stick. And because the rules of golf say that this stick cannot go in at 90 degrees like a croquet mallet, it goes in at an angle. Then how this weight is balanced and how this shaft enters this putter head affects what the putter face does or what it has a natural tendency to do. A lot of putters are towang, which means they’re heavier out here on the toe. And so the putter is going to have a natural tendency to torque or arc like that. Other putters are face balance which means they point to the sky. Problem is you don’t putt pointed to the sky. And so when you start to stroke that putter face, you make a stroke with it, it wants to point this way. That’s torque. The natural tendency of the putter to twist and rotate. And you have to with your grip, with your arms, with your hands, with your stroke, prevent that torque. You have to do something to maintain this putter face being square. So along the way, people came up with the idea of shafting, waiting, and balancing a putter so that it would torque less, which is important because that makes it easier for you to keep the face square. roll putts online. Now, there are two ways of doing this. One is the way that Lab Golf and almost everybody else today is doing it, and that’s with a little bit of torque, but that torque is what they call target balance. For instance, if I put a lab putter on a ballot point, balance point, it’s pointed at the target. Now lab calls this lie angle balance and that’s what they had to do to get their patent because somebody else had had this idea long before them. So they had to give it a new name to get a patent and that’s okay. That’s just the way the industry goes. PXG calls it target balance, but really it’s corrective torque or helpful torque. So, this putter, if I hang it on a balance point and let it twist or rotate, it always torqus back to the target. Now, that movement like this is torque, but it’s a helpful torque because it keeps the face pointed at the target. So, if in your stroke you make a mistake and you twist and rotate this, it’s going to move back to the target. That certainly helps you keep the putter face square. That’s what Lab, Axis, Odyssey, now PXG, Bettonard, everybody is doing with their putters these days. Is that what I call corrective torque, target balance or lie angle B, whatever you want to call it, doesn’t matter. Now the second thing is absolutely truly zero torque and only two manufacturers in the world who make a putter that is truly zero torque. One is the P and SI putter designed by Andrew Walters. Andrew came up with a green reading system that he calls Egos, which requires that your putter hang true vertical. And because most putters have some toe hang or some balancing, it hangs sideways. It’s not truly vertical. He has a green reading system I’ve talked about a lot on the channel called Egos, expert green reading operating system. And it requires that your putter hang true vertical. And so what he was doing is he was printing some little stickers that he would stick on your putter. you’d calibrate it to find out how to hold it so that it was true vertical. Put that sticker on there. PGA said, “No, that’s outside the rules of golf.” And so Andy said, “All right, I’m a surveyor and I have an engineering degree. I’ll go make a putter that hangs true vertical.” And he patented his in 2015. It’s called the putter and surveying instrument. Egos putter. Psi. Egos. About the same time, Mitch Bradley and Matt Flynn started Honu. And the Hu putter is mass balanced. It’s shafted and weighted in such a way. And the Egos putter by Andrew Walters does the same thing. Wherever you point this face, it stays. So if during my stroke I get offline and point it here, that’s where the face stays. Unless I do something to pull it back square. In other words, if you have an arcing stroke, this putter is not going to have a tendency to flip and flop. It’s going to stay with your perfect arc. And if you make a stroke that gets the putter face back where it was at setup and you get it back to the same place at impact, this putter will not torque, will not go offline, and you’ll roll the putt straight up your target line. So, the only two kinds of torque out there are corrective torque and absolutely true zero torque. There are only two manufacturers who make a true zero torque putter. And I’m not trying to sell you either one of those. Obviously, I use a Honu. If you buy a Hu and use the promo and discount code, I make a few dollars and no apologies for that. I love it and use it, but I’m not trying to sell you one. In fact, if you’ll stick with me till we get to the conclusions on this, I don’t think you most of you need a new putter at all. The fact is these reduced torque putters help you because there’s less movement or in the case of the Honu and the P and SI Eag. And if you learn to make a really good putting stroke, it will go straight. And so this concept of less torque, torque that keeps your putter face pointed towards the target and absolutely zero torque is not new. In fact, let’s talk about the history of that. All the way back in 1930, there’s a patent that mentions mass balancing a putter to reduce torque or give it, oddly enough, corrective torque that keeps the face pointed towards the target. In the 1960s, Ping had a patent for mass balancing a putter. They never developed that product or put it to market. I don’t know why. Maybe they did develop it, but it never went to market or was sold. I don’t know why. Probably because they were having such success with their answer style putters. But then you come along to the early 2000s and a company named Puku, Pu Ku, designed and developed a truly zero torque mass balance putter. They had trouble getting any pros to use it or whatever for some reason. and Puku went bankrupt. Then in 2012, there was the Y putter, an unusual looking contraption that was mass balance and a very, very tiny bit of torque. And I think it was developed purely by accident. This guy who was a mechanic actually claimed he was a woman and a rocket scientist and had worked for NASA and for the Air Force and our stealth airplane technology. All of that was not true. But this mechanic invented this YR putter and Gary McCord is on the golf channel talking about this rocket scientist and this amazing putter. Aaron Battley was using it and playing in tournaments. It became all of the rage and they actually sold 90,000 of these in one hour. I won’t go into it anymore. There’s a great video on the channel on the Y putter and the putter that fooled everyone. But it was out there and it was really low torque and mass balance. I think purely by accident because there was no engineering or science behind it even though they claimed it did. went out of business, went bankrupt because of all the drama, got bought out by the Oracle company, and they really couldn’t sell them. And today, it’s considered a a relic, a a dead relic, even though it was actually a pretty good product. So, after Puku and Y went bankrupt and lost their patents, the Puku folks just let their patent expire for failure to renew it. They didn’t pay the fees to have it renewed. Along comes Andrew Walters. This was in 2015 that the PGA told Andy he couldn’t put a dot on putter shafts or sell people dots. He could sell people dots, but it was against the rules to use them, the dots on the putter shaft. So he says the PGA put him into the putting business and he sought to design a putter that was zero balanced or or zero torque, what he calls all balanced. Now Andy admittedly copied from the puku putter and that’s okay. They were out of business. Their patent was not renewed. He he admittedly copied from them. the same time Mitch Bradley and Matt Flynn and Matt is a PGA pro who was a pioneer in the idea of dynamic golf club fitting and dynamic putter fitting. Mitch Bradley is a golf nut and engineer. They came up with the idea in 2016 for Hone and they actually they came up with the idea a couple of years before that but actually started manufacturing and selling whole new putters in 2016 and everybody asked oh if or this P and SI by Egos putter are truly zero torque and so great why don’t we see a Tour Pro using those well it’s a really simple thing cost lots of money to get a PGA Tour Pro to use that. For instance, Axis spent for a fact $10 million to get their Axis One putter on the PGA Tour in the hands of a Tour Pro. That’s ridiculous. And they’re still struggling a little bit to sell very many putters, even though Justin Rose is now a partial owner in the company. Cost a lot of money to get a putter in a Tour Pro’s hands. But a lot of these small companies that have great ideas don’t do that. Additionally, with the Honu, each one is handmade from recycled bamboo flooring, which has a limited supply and handmade by a surfboard craftsman. You can’t massroduce them enough. Remember the yard putter from 2012? Aaron Badley was using it. They sold 90,000 in one hour. whole new or the P and SI EOS they don’t have the ability to produce that volume of putters and they don’t want to they have a limited capacity and a limited market the PNSI EOS putter came along in 2015 the whole new putter came along in 2016 and then Lab Golf started in 2018 there was in 2016 and 17 the directed force putter company started by retired miniatur pro Bill Press. And Directed Force is the same idea that’s behind Lab Golf. But Directed Force went bankrupt in 2018. It became Lab Golf, Lie Angle Balance. And that’s when they got new patents for what they call lie angle balancing or what I’m calling corrective torque or PXG is calling target balanced putters. They started in 2018 almost 100 years from the origin of this idea. But the reason that they succeeded, they started in 2018. they had the money. And Sam Han, who had business and marketing expertise from his previous experience in the bar and nightclub industry, came on board to run the company and they did a great job at marketing and they got in in 2019, just one year into their existence, Adam Scott to use a lab golf putter at the 2019 Masters. and it’s grown steadily from there. So, congratulations to Lab Golf. Now, my golf spy comes along and says, “Oh, everybody is copying off of Lab Golf and that’s shameful and etc.” And that is in fact just not true and really doesn’t matter even if it were true. You see, the fact is, it certainly appears to me, even though I can’t document it or prove it, that Lab Golf copied from the P and SI and Egos putter and maybe from Honu, which copied from Puku, which copied from a Ping patent way back in the 1960s, which copied from a patent in the 1930s, and no telling how many other people had this idea that didn’t get a patent on it and the fact is it doesn’t matter. The fact is that less torque helps you keep the putter face square to your target line and you will make more putts. Also, the fact is that it’s not a substitute for a good stroke. So, let’s talk about some key takeaways from all this history of lower torque putters. Take away one. Golfers have been blaming their equipment for missed putts and bad shots for at least a hundred years, probably longer. And that means that golf equipment manufacturers are constantly going to come up with new words and names and labels to design a new product that helps you blame that equipment because they know if they do, you’ll spend money on that product. Takeaway number two, this idea has been around a long time and it only became super popular since 2018 with Lab Golf. And that’s because of the number one rule in putter and most any other golf equipment marketing. And that rule is people don’t trust it. Even if it works, people don’t trust it unless some PGA Tour pro is using it and he’s near the top of the leaderboard on TV on Sunday. That’s just a fact and a phenomenon. The Yard putter proves that. They sold 90,000 putters in one hour because a tour pro Aaron Battley was using it and putting well. Takeaway number three, you do not need to go out and buy a brand new putter. Certainly, if you’re in the market for a putter, you ought to, the next time you buy a new putter, you ought to consider a lower torque putter because it will help you. What you really need to do and it will cost you a whole lot less money is number one, read greens. Number two, aim putts on your starting line. Number three, roll putts up that starter line by learning how to keep the putter face square in those first five inches behind the ball. Really good news there is I do lots of video on this channel on reading greens and aiming putts. But there is absolutely no substitute for a good consistent setup and a stroke that rolls your ball in the target line and learning to read greens so that you hit that target line.
