AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The Ross Rogers Golf Complex in Amarillo has been recognized as the top economic golf course in Texas, according to the latest rankings by the Dallas Morning News.

The Mustang Course at Ross Rogers claimed the number one spot, while the Wildhorse Course followed closely at number four.

Economy courses are defined as those where a round can be played for $69 or less. All four of Amarillo’s city golf courses made it into the top 25 economy courses in the state.

George Priolo, the City of Amarillo’s General Manager of Golf Operations, expressed pride in the recognition.

“Just getting the recognition is, you know, it just kind of gives you a boost to make it through the summers and we do have a purpose,” he said. “So, and in any business, whether it’s golf or something else, I think you always want to be recognized by your peers, and so that’s very flattering and we’re very fortunate to have the golf courses that we do.”

This marks the fifth time Ross Rogers has earned the top spot. Priolo noted the extensive work required to maintain the complex’s high standards.

“You know, these greens have to be mowed every morning. It’s just constant. By the time we get the whole golf course mowed, it just kind of looks like your front yard after a week. It’s time to start over, the grass is long and you just have to start over, it’s a constant battle,” Priolo said. “Changing cups, keeping the trash cleaned up, keeping the tees in good shape, the fairways, the roughs, so there’s a lot that goes into it.”

Golfer Clay Aufleger, who frequents the course two to three times a week, praised the maintenance efforts.

“Overall, I mean it’s a great course. I mean it’s definitely the best in town and probably the best in the Texas panhandle. They keep the golf course in great shape, everything’s always manicured, they do a great job here,” he said.

The Comanche Trail Golf Complex also earned spots in the top 25, with the Tomahawk Course ranked at 15 and the Arrowhead Course at 24.
