Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Darrell Hands, along with help from Doug shook and a couple of other SIR’s, the Chico-Paradise SIR’s Golf Club members have the luxury of playing numerous courses in our area for its semi-monthly tournaments,  such as: Bidwell, Canyon Oaks, Table Mountain. Peach Tree, Plumas Lake, Glenn, Rolling Hills, Wilcox Oaks and Bailey Creek for starters. Believe me, setting up one of these outings just doesn’t happen by itself. It takes a lot of time and effort in addition to cooperation from the staff at the various courses. Last week the SIR’s were hosted by Wilcox Oaks in Red Bluff. Next week the group will be playing at Plumas Lake in Olivehurst, and the following week up at Bailey Creek.

The format at Wilcox was a 4-Man Scramble, with several 3-Man teams in the field because of a lack of enough players. First place: Jake Dahl, Charles Demmer, Kevin Gifford and Tom Matheson, 56.9. Second: Dave Barnum, Larry Hildenbrand, Mike Lim and Jim Weidert, 58.5. Third: Greg Brown, Ken Glaziner, Kyle Glaziner and Dick Parsons, 59.2. Fourth: Bob Mabrey, Dennis McNamara and Jim Barger, 60.3. Fifth: Mark Hyder, Glen Pertuit, Paul Brossoit and Jeff Eber, 61.8.

A closest to pin contest was held on all four par three holes. Hole No. 4; 1, Mabrey; 2, Darrell Hands. Hole No. 8: 1, Lim; 2, Joe Velasquez. Hole No. 15: 1, Don Camy; 2, Mabrey. Hole No. 18: 1, Alex Van Patten; 2, Mabrey — again!

Spectacular shots

Elsie McLean played golf for 68 years before getting her first hole-in-one at the age of 102. Jackie Escobar only had to wait 3 months after taking up golf before reaching that milestone. Paula Rich can also relate to a short golf career before achieving an ace. Escobar aced the 4th hole at Bidwell last week. According to her eye witnesses, Mark Bradford, Dianne Suschil and Andrew Bartholomew, Escobar’s 100-yard pitching wedge tee shot spent a lot of time on the ground before eventually finding the bottom of the cup. Hey, it all looks the same on the score card.
