Nestled in the rolling dunes of Northeast Colorado is one the country’s most unique courses, Ballyneal Golf Club. Opened in 2006 by brothers Jim and Rupert O’Neal, Ballyneal is Tom Doak’s answer to Sand Hills, the original inland sand dunes course in neighboring Nebraska. The personality of the course constantly shifts between feeling tight and wide open, sheltered and exposed. The design is perfect for matches because anything can happen at any moment—and no two rounds—no two shots—are ever alike.

I’ve been lucky to make two trips to Ballyneal. It’s a testimonial to Tom Doak’s genius that different tees make it feel like a completely different golf course. I know not everyone can play here, but there might be no better place for a trip with your buddies. Playing 18, drinking a famous milkshake, hitting the Mulligan short course, then having a drink while having a contest on the putting course is one of the best days ever.

The cost of a membership at Ballyneal Golf & Hunt Club includes an initiation fee of $65,000 and annual dues of $8,000. Membership is highly exclusive, capped at 225 members, with a waiting list that can take years to clear.
The juxtaposition of 7&8 is compelling, especially coming right after the tough 6th. Two birdie holes, but one likely downwind and the other likely into the wind. Play this stretch -2 or -3 and you’re on your way to a good round. Play it in par or worse and you’re really kicking yourself over a missed opportunity.
