Golfers in Scotland are being given a rare chance to play on the world’s most iconic course without the hefty price tag
The Old Course at St Andrews, known as the home of golf, is opening its fairways to local players at a dramatically reduced rate. Starting next month, 179 discounted tee times will be available between May and October.
A round on the Old Course normally costs £340 during peak season, but under the new initiative, it will be available for just £42.50. That’s an eighth of the standard fee and a unique opportunity to follow in the footsteps of legends like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

A total of 716 golfers will get the chance to play at reduced prices, with slots also available on the Castle, Jubilee and Eden courses.
Described as a once in a lifetime opportunity, the offer gives everyday players the chance to experience golfing history on one of the most famous courses in the world.
Under a new initiative by the St Andrews Links Trust, golfers in Scotland can now enjoy rounds on some of the country’s most iconic courses for a fraction of the usual cost.

A tee time on the Castle Course, which typically costs £180, will be available for just £22.50. Meanwhile, rounds on the Jubilee and Eden courses will be reduced to £18.75 and £9.50 respectively, down from £150 and £75.
Neil Coulson, chief executive of St Andrews Links Trust, said: “As the Home of Golf, St Andrews Links Trust takes its responsibility to the sport incredibly seriously. That is why we are so excited to launch a new initiative offering golfers across Scotland the opportunity to play our historic and iconic courses at a lower price.
“Widening access to golf is a key objective for us, and over the coming years we hope we can continue to provide opportunities to golfers of all ages and abilities.
“Golf has become increasingly popular in recent years and with this demand for our courses has surged to unprecedented levels. We will continue to ensure that our ticket holders and visitors have the best experience possible, while ensuring that one of the country’s most precious golfing assets is available for the public too.”
Golfers across Scotland will have the chance to secure one of 11 coveted tee times on the Old Course on May 21, marking the launch of a new initiative aimed at improving access to the sport’s most iconic venue.
The scheme, led by the St Andrews Links Trust, also includes a themed week of reduced-price rounds on the Eden Course from May 27 to June 3.
Tee times during that stretch will be reserved for members of the armed forces, frontline emergency service workers, volunteers and disabled golfers.

To secure a place, players will need to enter a two-ball ballot, with successful applicants paired up and assigned a tee time. A family ballot will also be available, allowing one under-18 player per group to take part.
The trust confirmed that all rounds offered under the scheme will come from its existing visitor allocation. Only those living in Scotland who do not already hold a St Andrews Links Yearly Ticket will be eligible to apply. Residents of St Andrews already benefit from an annual ticket granting access to all seven courses for just £386.
The initiative comes at a time when green fees have surged across Scotland. According to analysis published by The Scotsman last month, the average cost of a round has risen by 67 per cent over the past five years across 30 of the country’s best known courses.
At Gleneagles, a summer round on the King’s Course has jumped from £140 to £330, while peak fees at the Duke’s Course in St Andrews have risen from £100 to £220 over the same period.
