Scottie Scheffler expressed confidence in his game following his performance at the RBC Heritage, saying he feels he is “really close” to unlocking his peak performance levels in what will serve as a warning to Rory McIlroy ahead of the US PGA Championship.

The World No. 1 scored 70 in Sunday’s round in South Carolina, sealing yet another top-10 finish thanks to his 12-under par score for the tournament. Justin Thomas edged out Andrew Novak to clinch the RBC Heritage title after a playoff.

Despite not having secured a PGA Tour win so far this year, Scheffler remains a consistent threat, regularly vying for top positions. He has enjoyed strong performances at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am (tied ninth), the Genesis Invitational (tied third), the Houston Open (tied second), and a fourth-place finish at the Masters before his recent showing at the RBC Heritage.

With belief that a triumph is imminent, Scheffler’s performances will have made McIlroy take note following his Masters win as he looks to regain top spot in the world rankings and claim more major glory this year.

Scheffler, when asked about his performance in South Carolina, told reporters: “You know, I did some good things. I just needed a few more shots out there, which was definitely there for the taking for me. I just didn’t quite take advantage of them.”

When questioned on what he might want to improve before his next start, Scheffler responded: “I think I’m really close. I feel like I did a lot of things well this week, just a few of the important shots I just didn’t pull off. Outside of that it was a pretty solid week.”

McIlroy and Scheffler will be among the favourites for glory at the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, when it kicks off on May 15. And the American appears confident he has what it takes to get the better of his rival.
