The American golfer fired an impressive 10-under-par in the first round, putting on a show that even golfing great Tiger Woods never managed to replicate. Thomas’ score of 61, achieved without a single eagle and despite a bogey on the par-four 10th, was a testament to his birdie consistency—racking up 11 over 18 holes. His brilliant round tied the course record and marked his 14th career round of 62 or better on the PGA Tour over the past four decades. Only Kevin Na comes close with 11 such rounds, while Woods has managed the feat nine times. Reflecting on his play, Thomas said: “I just played really solid. Nothing spectacular, just consistent. I drove the ball well, which is really important on this course, and I kept finding myself in good spots with numbers I liked. I had a lot of full wedge shots, and although you need to be cautious on this course, the pin positions and angles allowed me to be a bit more aggressive. Things just started to click.” The challenging links-style course didn’t intimidate World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler either. Following a somewhat lackluster outing at the Masters, Scheffler bounced back with a strong seven-under-par round, keeping himself in contention for what could be his first PGA Tour win of 2025. Scheffler commented: “Compared to the four rounds at Augusta last week, today felt way less stressful. I wasn’t scrambling for par as much—I just kept the ball in good positions throughout the round.” Meanwhile, Justin Rose, who fell just short in a dramatic playoff against Rory McIlroy at Augusta, sits tied for 10th after an opening round of four under par. The tournament action will continue Friday afternoon from Harbour Town.
