PORTLAND (WGME) — The snow has melted off the greens, and golfers have made their way back onto the course.
“The staff is excited, everybody has been waiting for this because it’s been a long, cold winter, and we were able to open on March 20. So, our customers were happy, our members were happy,” Nonesuch Golf Course Owner Dan Hourihan said.
There’s quite a bit of work that goes into keeping Nonesuch Golf Course in tip-top shape.
Hourihan says every fall, they address any drainage system problems, and also aerate the greens once a year.
“As usual, we go out there and assess the damage from wind, etc. and clear up all the broken trees, brush, and sticks, and then we have to look at the irrigation system and see how many breaks we have in the system every winter. We only had five breaks this year, which is great,” Hourihan said.
Dean Walker and his daughter Nicole were excited to spend the afternoon teeing it up on the golf course.
“It’s been a long winter, you know, we all hibernate, so it’s nice to get out here. I’m here with my daughter, and we’re going to play a quick nine holes. It’s a little chilly, but at least there’s no snow on the ground,” golfer Dean Walker said.
“I’ve been playing golf since I was probably in the second grade. My grandfather and my dad got me into it, and I’ve loved the sport ever since,” golfer Nicole Walker said.
If you plan to hit the golf course Saturday, it will be warm, but watch for the chance of a few showers.
