I tested my mates Takomo 301 CB Irons… HONEST FEEDBACK!

There is so much HYPE around DTC Brands like TAKOMO, and I don’t know why, but I’m not sure if we’re all being CONNED by great influencer marketing, or wether the product is as good as the Big Brands!?…

Last week I tested the Haywood CB Irons in the studio, and the feel and numbers were fantastic, however, I’ve never tested a DTC Iron set out on the course!

In today’s video we’re playing an irons only got vlog at Woolley Park Golf Club, come and join us, and let’s see if this set of irons can sway me to believing all the HYPE!…

  1. I am a 35+ year master fitter and builder here in the US. I have purchased/sold/built 39 sets and as far as specs go I have only adjusted 9 individual heads out of 273 to specs. I will tell you this is better than most OEM’s. I currently play Takomo’s and would highly recommend their products.

  2. As a now older golfer, 71 years young I found my game needed something with more forgiveness. I put the Takomo 101's in my bag this year and have not been disappointed in getting them. They're about 5 yards longer than my previous clubs, (Honma), feel great, and you can't beat the price.

  3. The copper finish will come off within the first year of use! Had cobra forgetec copper irons finish just didn't hold up at all. Was so disappointed with the look in a short period of time of use!

  4. Let's see James irons when fitted we're almost 2000 dollars. Come on gaz. Those are hardly dtc irons

  5. I bought a 101t 5 iron off ebay . Firstly I needed 1 as my 5 had broken and secondly just to try as I'm looking at changing my irons next season and wanted to "try before you buy " I will be buying the full set and will resell the 5 iron. I asked my range to check the loft and it was 26⁰ instead of 25⁰. I asked them to make it a little stronger for me and they managed to get it to 24⁰. All in all highly recommend.

  6. Gaz, this is another video that shows how fittings are not as important as they proclaim to be

  7. Interestingly, I recently went for a face-to-face club fitting and then went through Takomo’s online fitting process. Both produced exactly the same recommendation 👍🏻

  8. I've got the Takomo 101's being a higher handicap starting out, and I couldn't recommend them enough. Had them for nearly 2 years now.

  9. Great show again mate, Alex at Orka golf insists on no tolerance, you get what is said, plus they give free loft and lie adjustments for as long as you play them, now that's class, keep them coming mate.

  10. I like the look of these but I do have concerns about quality, durability and consistency through the set. After all, it's a company in Finland who gets the clubs made for them in China with a name designed to fool you into thinking it's a Japanese brand.

  11. I almost got a set of 301CB to replace my AP3s. Ended up getting T100s instead, but I still wouldn't mind giving Takomo a chance someday

  12. Bought a second hand set of 101s off Facebook marketplace, guy used them for a few rounds and didn't like them. Offered him a cheeky £200 for the set, 5 to PW, he accepted, I'm 70, still hanging on to single digits, owned Hogan, Pings, Taylormade previously. Honestly the best, easiest to hit and longest irons I've ever used. So happy I've put my beloved Hogan icon irons up for sale.

  13. Andrew Jensen has a video out about the tolerances of his Takomo irons. It’s very interesting that it’s not just lie and lofts that needs to be checked, but also the swing weights which he needed to adjust for optimal performance. I guess that’s the other hidden expense that comes with a DTC clubs that people will need to be aware of.

  14. l fell for the youtubers and bought a set of Tokomo 201. The company was advertise as an European design etc but dummy me never ask where it is made. Well l got the answer when l got my set, Made in China and l was just about to fall on the floor. For $600 l could have bought a set of Mizuno etc better made and NOT in china. l will never buy anything a youtuber signoff on. And yes it was CHUNK! l took it to the driving rage once and l throw it in my basement. Very disappointed!

  15. The fact that James is sponsored by Takomo should have been disclosed. Viewers should be aware of that when listening to his opinions about the clubs.

  16. I tried the 301 cb combo set and did not get along with them at all hit my 2019 t100 s way better and they feel way better to

  17. James I am not a good golfer. But you always mention two or three times a video. That you like a lower ball flight. Is very windy there or you just like it?

  18. My first, set of “real” irons were Proshop irons back in the 80s. You went in, picked from various knock-off heads at different price levels, the pro measured you for shaft length and grip size, and then you hit a few balls and he watched your swing to choose shaft stiffness. Took about 20 mins and I got fitted with Hogan Radials knockoffs with longer shafts and thicker grips. All for a bargain price ( I think it was for under $150). Great experience, and perfect for a kid without much money. Went in with a couple friends who also got clubs. Had these clubs for about 6 years. I love the idea of D to C irons. Don’t have to donate your kidney for a set of clubs.

  19. I am from central Illinois USA; I just went for a fitting with sub-70. I could not be happier. He took the time to help me with my swing, and I needed it after being out of the game for 20 years. You should definitely look at them.

  20. Ive had mine for about a year, the 101s and i love them, i only hope that they stay true to the price and dont get to many people on board who will affect the price. My next set will be the same brand if i ever upgrade.

  21. My problem with Takomo is when I get the heads and buy the shafts, grips I want then have them built I can get a big name brand for the same price and can get fitted and test them with a return policy. So there is no price advantage and I can't test or return the Takomo's.

  22. What in the world would these DTCs do without YouTubers constantly doing their advertising? Probably a reason the prices are so low. They don’t have to actually pay for a media campaign when you all are so willing to do it for next to nothing. Don’t get me wrong, don’t doubt they are good clubs, but this model seems a bit … fishy. Every bit as fishy as when golf magazines do their “club test” issues every year and only the ones who ever get gold or high rankings are the big brands buying ads in said magazines. Am I cynical? Yep.

  23. I’ve played Sub-70 irons in the 699 Pro for years, and then last year I bought some used New Level CBs for about $400. My New Level irons are phenomenal, big fan of their product, I think they are very underrated and under appreciated in the DTC world.

  24. I bought Sub70 for many reasons over Takomo. They offer satin, raw, or black forged heads in .355 taper tip or .377 parallel tip. I chose the 659 TC forged satin .355 taper tip with Mitsubishi MMT 105g stiff flex shaft, custom ferrule, and Golf Pride MMC midsize grip. They offer so many more shaft options.
