Rory McIlroy’s Grand Slam triumph could be marked by a ‘Balls on the Falls’ statue
It has been quite a week for Holywood’s Rory McIlroy as he finally donned the coveted green jacket following his historic Grand Slam win at The Masters in Augusta, but could we mark the occasion locally?
McIlroy has given the people of Northern Ireland much to be proud of, especially in the run-up to The Open at Royal Portrush in July.
And with his victory highlighting Northern Ireland on the world map, we look at five ways we could celebrate one of our greatest sportsmen’s biggest win.

Statue
We all know the famous Rise sculpture at the Broadway Roundabout. Its spheres are hard to miss as you enter the city via the Westlink.
Perhaps we could make it more recognisable with a statue of Rory McIlroy hitting the well-known structure with a golf club?
It could be the perfect introduction to the city of Belfast, featuring one of our most well-known sportsmen.
Rory’s Day Bank Holiday
Why not have another Bank Holiday so we can celebrate all things golf?
With his Masters win being in April, an extra Bank Holiday — perhaps at the end of the month — would go down well with the people of Northern Ireland, especially in the lead-up to May Day.
Golf club
By golf club, we mean the courses avid golf fans could visit to tee off every weekend, rather than the sporting equipment.
Imagine heading to play a round at the Rory McIlroy Golf Club. Not only would it show how people here feel about McIlroy shining a spotlight on Northern Ireland, but it would further immortalise him in the local sporting sphere. Perhaps this could be in his home town Holywood?
Rory’s Bay
We have Helen’s Bay — but is there a stretch of beach that could be named Rory’s Bay? Somewhere golfers could relax after a round at the golf club.
Tayto crisps
It would seem fitting for Tayto to invent a special edition crisp in honour of McIlroy’s success.
Whatever the flavour — it should be in a green bag with a nod to the coveted green jacket Rory is now a very proud owner of.
