Bryson DeChambeau said Rory McIlroy wouldn’t talk to him during the final round of the US Masters at Augusta.

McIlroy ended years of hurt to finally win his fifth major, becoming the sixth player in history to win the career Grand Slam.

He began the day two shots clear of DeChambeau, his partner in the final pairing, but took a double-bogey on the first which opened the door for the American.

Two-time US Open champ DeChambeau then took the lead with a birdie on the second but what followed was a rollercoaster ride for both players. McIlroy made back-to-back birdies on three and four and then went four shots clear with another birdie on the ninth.

DeChambeau’s challenge faded with a double bogey on eleven, sending his approach shot into the water but from down the field, Justin Rose made a Sunday charge.

The Englishman made eight birdies in the last twelve holes of his round, including a twenty footer on the last to reach the clubhouse on -11, putting the pressure on McIlroy.

A sensational pair of birdies on fifteen and seventeen put Rory back in the lead, meaning a par at the last would end his eleven year major drought.

But McIlroy pushed a wedge into the bunker and then failed to get up and down, missing a four and a half footer to send it to a sudden death play-off on 18.

He birdied the 18th in the first play-off hole having stuck a 125 yard wedge to two and a half feet and finally that was that, bringing years of emotion to the surface.

When asked how Rory was feeling after the round, Bryson DeChambeau told reporters he had no idea because Rory ‘wouldn’t talk to him’ all day. He put this down to Rory ‘being focused’ but said his approach would be very different. ‘It’s not me though,’ he said.

“No idea. Didn’t talk to me once all day. He wouldn’t talk to me,” DeChambeau said.

DeChambeau compared McIlroy’s rollercoaster round to one of his own, and said he ‘wanted to cry’ for the Northern Irishman when he found Rae’s Creek with a poor pitch on 13.

“I wanted to cry for him. I mean, as a professional, you just know to hit it into the middle of the green and I can’t believe he went for it, or must have just flared it.

“But I’ve hit bad shots in my career to, so it happens. And when you’re trying to win a major championship, especially out there, Sunday at Augusta, the Masters, you have to just do it and get the job done and do it right.

“There were times when it looked like he had full control and times where I was like ‘what’s going on?’ So it kind of looked like one of my rounds actually.

“(The atmosphere was) electric. I loved it. But he was just like…being focused it guess. It’s not me though.”
