I always carry because I want the workout. Besides, on most courses you have to go a long way round when you use a trolley. So the net benefit of doing so is probably minimal anyway

What studies did you choose that indicates that there is a 10.4% difference?
When I play in hot weather (& I always walk) I'm carrying five or six water bottles in addition to everything else in my bag. Good luck carrying that on a 95° day with high humidity.
