World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is shooting for history to complete the career Grand Slam by winning all four major championships and his first Green Jacket as a populur player and best bet to win The Masters.
From CBS Sports announcer Jim Nantz calling his first Masters 40 years ago on Jack Nicklaus’ historic 6th Masters win with “The Bear has come out of hibernation,” to Tiger Woods’ record margin of victory by 12 strokes to win the 1997 Masters, there are plenty of memorable Masters championship wins.
Masters Tournament History
Since 1934, The Masters Tournament has been home to some of golf’s greatest moments. The stage at Augusta National is unique to golf and to sport with each hole named after a tree, bush, shrub, or flower found on the course. The 2025 Masters is the 89th edition and includes the top players expected to challenge for the coveted Green Jacket including current world No. 1 player, 2-time Masters winner and defending champion Scottie Scheffler.
Top Championship Moments
Four of the top Masters wins and moments since 2000 include Phil Mickelson in 2004, Tiger Woods in 2005, Bubba Watson in 2012 and Scottie Scheffler in 2022.
In one of the most memorable shots in Masters history, Tiger Woods makes a near impossible chip-in on Hole No. 16 on his way to a playoff win over Chris DiMarco to capture the 2005 Masters and his 4th Green Jacket. Woods would add his 5th Masters win in 2019 in his “return to glory” and another historic and memorable Masters moment. Woods came from behind in the final round, marking a significant comeback after back surgery and a period of struggles.
Who Won The Most Masters?
Jack Nicklaus won a record six Masters in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975 and the “Bear has come out of hibernation’” win in 1986 at age 46. He’s still the oldest player to win The Masters Tournament.
Tiger Woods has five Masters wins (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2019), and the late Arnold Palmer won four Green Jacket’s at The Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964. Phil Mickelson has 3 Masters wins along with Sam Snead, Gary Player, Jimmy Demaret and Nick Faldo, who was also part of Masters history in winning the 1996 Masters. Faldo overcame a 6-shot deficit in the final round and shot 67 to overtake world No. 1 Greg Norman’s collapse as the Shark shot 78 in another memorable Masters.

Recent Standout Masters Wins
One of the most memorable moments and standout wins at The Masters came in 2004. Phil Mickelson made an 18-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole Sunday to win his first Green Jacket with Jim Nantz saying “Is it his time” as the putt rolled in for the win and a 1-stroke victory over Ernie Els, who was on the practice tee hoping for a playoff. Mickelson was a popular player and people’s choice to win, as he had played in 46 major tournaments across his first 13 years as a professional golfer before winning a major. The 2004 Masters win was his 23rd PGA Tour win.
In 2013, Adam Scott became the first Australian to win The Masters. That victory came 10 years after Mike Weir became the first Canadian to win The Masters, and first left-handed golfer to win The Masters Tournament.
A record 8 left-handed golfers are playing in the 2025 Masters Tournament, including Mickelson and 2-time Masters champion Bubba Watson (2012, 2014), whose 2012 Masters victory came in sudden-death on the second playoff hole over Louis Oosthuizen.
Watson provided another memorable moment and iconic shot in the sudden death playoff. His second shot from way right of the fairway in the trees and from the pine straw on hole No. 10 “changed my life.” Watson said he was “a kid who never had a golf lesson and didn’t have much money.” He described his memorable Masters moment as “I couldn’t write this story. Nobody would believe it.”
The Best Masters Score In History
The lowest 72-hole score in Masters Tournament history is 268, 20-under par, set by Dustin Johnson in 2020. That event was the only Masters Tournament played in November due to COVID. Tiger Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015) previously held the record with a score of 270 (18-under par) with Woods’ 12-stroke margin of victory the largest in Masters history.
Has Any Golfer Won All Four Majors In One Year?
No golfer has ever won all four major championships (the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship in the same calendar year, a feat known as the “Grand Slam”. Tiger Woods completed the “Tiger Slam” by winning four consecutive major championships: the U.S. Open, The Open Championship and PGA Championship in 2000, and the Masters in 2001. He’s the only golfer to hold all four major titles at once.
Every hole at Augusta National with Scottie Scheffler outlines his first Masters win in 2022, which was also his first major championship victory with a 3-shot win at Augusta National over Rory McIlroy. Scheffler had become the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world just two weeks prior to the 2022 Masters, and he’s held the No. 1 ranking every week since heading into the 2025 Masters Tournament, where his odds to win are near a historic low at less than 5/1. Scheffler won the 2024 Masters for his second Green Jacket as part of a historic season winning on the PGA Tour seven times – the most in one season since Tiger Woods in 2007.
