Wyndham Clark on magic of Augusta and studying Tiger Woods’ approach
Wyndham Clark joins Sports Seriously to talk about the Masters and how he’s studied Tiger Woods’ success there over the years.
The Masters is one of golf’s biggest occasions, with the best golfers in the world converging on Augusta, Georgia, for the first major of the PGA Tour season.
The 89th edition of the Masters will take place at Augusta National Golf Club, the only course to ever host the tournament. The famed golf club, located in eastern Georgia, was built on a plot of land that was once a plant nursery, with each hole named for a type of tree. However, Hurricane Helene did tremendous damage across many states in September 2024, leaving plenty of work to get the links into playable condition.
Fortunately, that work was completed in plenty of time, with the Masters set to take place as planned. The tournament begins on Thursday with one round per day until Sunday sees the winner don the fabled green jacket.
Here’s what to know about Augusta National Golf Club, including its location, how to become a member, and the price to play a round:
Masters location: Where is Augusta National?
The Masters is played every year at Augusta National Golf Club, widely considered one of the top courses in the sport. Augusta National is located in Augusta, Georgia, which sits on the state’s eastern border with South Carolina.
Of the PGA Tour’s four majors, only the Masters has been played at the same course every time, with the 2025 tournament the 89th edition.
How many courses are at Augusta National?
Augusta National Golf Club has just two courses (or one-and-a-half, depending on how you look at it). The Masters will take place on the club’s legendary 18 holes, while Wednesday’s Par 3 competition will take place at the nine-hole Par 3 course.
How many trees did Augusta National lose?
Hurricane Helene struck the United States in late September 2024, causing horrific damage across numerous states. While it was far from the most important thing in a storm that killed 248 people, Augusta National suffered significant damage, including a huge number of trees on the course.
Augusta National has not confirmed the number of trees lost amid the carnage left in Helene’s wake, but the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported the number could be as high as 1,000. Pine trees are believed to make up the bulk of the losses.
Golf veterans have noted that the course looks markedly different, with new views and the potential for wind coming through in places that tree cover previously shielded. Golf Digest published a photo series highlighting the difference, though expectations are that the course’s playability is still very much intact.
How much does it cost to play Augusta National?
If you’re desperate to play the same course as you’ll see at the Masters, we have good news and bad news.
The good news is that there are no greens fees, meaning that the cost to just drop in and play a round is $0 … if you can get on the course.
That’s where the bad news comes in: Augusta National is a private club, and the only ways to actually tee off without an altercation with club security are by being a member (or a guest of one), being an employee of the club, or by becoming one of the world’s best golfers and qualifying for the Masters or the Augusta National Women’s Invitational as a professional.
Augusta National caddies are, per Golf Monthly, allowed to play one round per year, while media members can reportedly enter a lottery to take to the links the day after the Masters concludes.
How to become a member at Augusta National Golf Club?
If you’d like to land a membership at Augusta National Golf Club, you’d better start networking. There is no application process, with membership an invite-only process. The club has a long history of privacy, and while many reports have listed the total number of members around 300, there is no exact number confirmed by Augusta National.
Once you secure the remarkably exclusive invitation, you’d better make sure you can afford to actually accept it. A range of reports over the last 15 years have placed the initiation fee at somewhere between $40,000 and $300,000, while annual dues are estimated to run between $4,000 and $30,000.
