COWARTS, Ala. (WTVY) – Wiregrass United Way and Home Oil Company in Cowarts hosted a kickoff luncheon on Thursday ahead of the company’s 36th annual Charity Golf Classic happening next month.

This is the 22nd year that the yearly fundraiser event, which has been a longstanding tradition for the area, has raised money in partnership between the Shirley family-owned and operated Home Oil Company and Wiregrass United Way, with additional partnership support from Hobo Pantry.

Home Oil’s Dustin and Ryan Shirley said this opportunity to continuously partner with Wiregrass United Way and help in their mission to give back to the community makes this event work and worth the effort.

“Walter has been a huge help in this…him and his volunteers have been instrumental in this process,” Ryan Shirley said. “Without them, we would have not been able to do this for the past 22 years.”

“You know, it just really hits home when we have events like we did earlier this week with the storms come through and damage to a school specifically, and you see two or three of their agencies that they fund and support out there helping with the clean up and making sure that everyone is safe,” Dustin Shirley said. “It’s really good to be able to see that and for a community to pull together.”

Money raised from the event will go back to Wiregrass United Way, who will distribute that back out to the 40 partner agencies they serve in the area.

The 36th annual Home Oil Charity Golf Classic is set for Friday, May 9, at RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks in Dothan.

As of Thursday afternoon, there are still about four spots open for participants. Anyone who wants to be a part of the event can contact Wiregrass United Way at (334) 792-9661 or Home Oil Company at (334) 793-1544.
