Thank you for this video, Steve. I have been commenting around YouTube for months now how people like Couples, Knapp, and Cameron Champ look so effortlessly swinging the club. Here is a sampling of what other YouTube golf professionals have said:
1. Their swings look effortless because their heads are relatively still to those who are swing wildly. Put both swings on video. Cover their heads with your thumb as you play the video so that you can only see their bodies rotate. You will see they look practically the same.
2. They appear to be swinging slow, but they are actually swinging faster than you can imagine. Put on a video of Knapp's, Couples', or Cameron Champ's swing on loop autoplay. Grab your driver (or 7-iron, or better yet, your wedge so that you don't hurt yourself). Go ahead and try to match their speed going back and through. You will soon notice how incredibly fast they are swinging.
3. Amateur swings are actually much slower than what they think they feel. Amateurs will say that they FEEL they are swing over 100mph, but on camera, you will soon notice that their swings are actually quite slow.
4. Jake Knapp's swing, just like John Daly's swing, covers a WHOLE LOT MORE distance than regular players. They have to bring that clubhead around way faster than most since they are well past parallel (they are not actually past parallel, but that's for another video).
5. Finally, and my favorite, some golfers swing the club, other golfers let the club swing them.
I guess those answers make sense.
personal biomechanics and genetics. the biggest factor here. Knapp is made of cartilage and sinew and is flexy as a whip.
How many Majors has Jake Knapp won? I love his swing but his backswing is ultralong plus he depends on his wristspeed to create clubheadspeed. It looks a lot nicer than Brysons but Bryson has better control.
Bryson might be applying the brakes with his hands, but that’s to allow the clubhead to move even faster. That’s why his cruising club head speed is faster than Knapp.
I absolutely love Jake’s swing, but the description of Brysons swing is a big miss in terms of physics and biomechanics. The guy does what he does for a reason.
When I try to throw the club like that I tend to shank it for some reason.
Classic example of the differences between what “The Golfing Machine” called a Hitter vs a Swinger
Spinning? Where have I heard that before?😂😂
Agree with the supple quickness idea. Hackmotion may well shed some light on what the wrists are doing. I suspect it is all about rolling the forearms.
A modern Carlos Franco but younger. Brysons swing is totally different he uses natural golf address and grip and set up except for the club behind the ball. I'm a Professional Golfer for 27 years now from Carlsbad California. Two different swings and with the long one you better have solid lower body with that long wristy swing and don't ever play Industry Hills with that ruff and a long swing.
Eduardo Romero. Angel Cabrera.
If you’ve got world class face control with your hands then fine…. If not, good luck finding your ball using this technique
A lot has to do with their grip. Couples and knsppp both have strong grips while Bryson's is super weak. Different release patterns
To get Bryson's swing, gotta workout and build those same muscles. lol
SWING EASY HIT HARD
There is no secret move.
At the freeze frame at 2:34, look at the Jake's flat left wrist vs Fred's cupped left wrist.
Been working on this for 20yrs….lol
Knap is definitely not using his hands at all, loose arms and wrists whipping it with his turn, much like how you would a Frisbee, directing the energy with your hands, the release will happen without intentional effort IMHO. The shaft flexing, and releasing near or just after the bottom of the swing is the key. The hard part is applying the speed of the turn correctly to keep the shaft at max load, you can defiantly tell when you hit the ball with a properly loaded shaft. Knap loads the shaft at the change of direction and keeps it loaded all the way thought the ball, you must have constant acceleration to do this properly. Now you can try the crack the whip method and try and snap the club like a bull whip thought the ball or a like a wet towel at the pool, but good luck that it is a different way and mind set. thats what all the long drive guys do, but we are golfing, put it in the fair way. Rory is prob the best at it, he really pulls back and up on his driver to accelerate the head. The lead leg striating, and jumping up out of the "squat", does accelerate the head, but it adds complexity to the swing, this is something he has done from swinging a very heave club as a child, it is very hard to teach your self that, this is what the speed sticks are teaching you… Knap, Couples, ELS all fluid turners, Couples does look like he snaps it a bit with his hands. Watch some Sam Sneed… be oily relaxed…Daley also.. zero tension in the arms and hands. Ill give you the key to how do this, keep your hands and arms totally passive, don't change any angels during the back swing, the wrist cock at the top happens automatically with the change of direction,,, watch Knaps club head, it stays in place for a second as he starts to uncoil loading the wrist and shaft.
Nice!
The main reason is that we don't practice 14- 16 hours a day, have a coach, or work out for 3 hours a day. We have jobs. LOL
I am taking Freddie's swing over Bryson's all day long
A lot of talk. Not much on actually how to do it!!
Jake's secret move is his elbow! plus he is very athletic man with big biceps!
Great video, Steve. It has generated lots of interest and discussion. Btw, I'm more of a loose wrists and centrifugal force swinger. The timing needs to be a little more precise, but it generates easy power and is easier on older bodies.
