It’s a situation in which many of us have surely found ourselves: You’re dating someone new, and you decide to start spreading the word to key personnel. For Tiger Woods, that meant that when his relationship with Vanessa Trump got serious, he needed to place a call to her ex-father-in-law, his golf buddy, Donald Trump. (A situation fewer of us have encountered.)
Trump delivered his thoughts on the relationship, and how Woods shared his change in relationship status with him, to reporters in the Oval Office Monday like the very important national news that it is.
“Well, I love Tiger and I love Vanessa and they had a great relationship,” he said, in response to a question about the newly confirmed couple and Woods “becoming a part of the broader Trump family.” The golfer called him personally with his hot goss a while back, he said.
“Tiger actually called me a few months ago and he, you know, I have a very special, very good relationship with Tiger, I played golf with him a couple of times over the last month, and he’s a fantastic guy and a fantastic athlete,” Trump said. “He told me about it, and I said Tiger, that’s good, that’s good. I’m very happy for both. I just—let them both be happy.”
Oh, and lest Vanessa’s ex-husband, Donald Trump Jr., takes offense at his dad’s well-wishes, Trump the Elder floated an explanation for his son’s 2018 divorce, one that had nothing to do with his number one boy: Russia.
“I happen to think the relationship with my son, I happen to think their relationship was hurt very badly by the witch hunt that went on: Russia, Russia, Russia and all the crap they put Don through, who knew nothing about it,” Trump blustered, referencing the investigation into whether his son colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election. (Junior was not ultimately charged when the Mueller report was released.) “But Vanessa and Don had a very good relationship, they have incredible children, five incredible children. All good athletes, all great students, they’re like, great. And they broke up, you know, quite a while ago, which to me was very sad because I think they’re both great.”
Divorce: Sad. Russia: A heartbreaker. Tiger: Good! Got it.
Those children also appear to have played a part in the hosel rocket trajectory of the romance: Both Woods and Vanessa Trump have children who are students at The Benjamin School, and her eldest daughter, Kai Trump, is a talented golfer who has also crossed paths with Woods on the green several times.
